The sectarian crime stats they forgot to destroy

1261

I’ve just caught Joe O’Rourke’s article on the Association site about the long-awaited released of statistics on sectarian crime in Scotland.  Joe suggests that the data from 2003 – 2010 was has been destroyed by the Crown Office.  I also hear that the Scottish Government will release entirely irrelevant ‘information’ today, specifically, where offences took place, not which groups were responsible or which groups were targeted by the offenders.

It takes a lot of effort to make sure you destroy data these days, you need to ensure not only that prosecutors permanently delete backups (which I really doubt they do) but also that the police similarly comply.

Fortunately all is not lost.  While it’s just about believable that regional police forces across Scotland and the Crown Office have acted in symmetry on this issue, I could have helped the First Minister, Alex Salmond’s, search for clarity by pointing him in the direction of British Transport Police (BTP).  The Transport Police are a separate force who operate across Britain and are run by the Home Office in London.  They are also a lot less proficient at destroying data.

They previously gave me detailed statistics on all incidents they record in connection with Scottish football for season 2007-08.  One of the most pleasing aspects of the information is the complete eradication of sectarian offences from all but one Scottish club, so the First Minister will be delighted to learn he has a smaller problem on his hands than he perhaps knew.  According to BTP, 11 arrests were made for sectarian offences in total, 10 Rangers fans and one Northern Ireland fan.

You can see the detail figures for all recorded incidents here (the majority of which are for non-sectarian issues).  From a total of 99 incidents (not all of which resulted in arrest), there were six involving Celtic fans, six for Dundee United, seven for Motherwell, four for Hibernian and five each for Aberdeen and Hearts.  Rangers fans were involved in a total of 48 incidents.

The BPT figures also make it clear that most incidents occur when fans travel to away venues.  The Force also confirmed that incidents surrounding the 2008 Uefa Cup final in Manchester were not included in these statistics.

To further aid Mr Salmond in his search for clarity on this issue, he can contact British Transport Police with a Freedom of Information request here, where they will be able to provide him (or you) with up to date stats.

  9. It has been a long time since Celtic played, it seems a lot longer this time because the bigots are hell bent on attacking anything Celtic/Catholic/Irish.

I remember listening to Dallas as he “acted” so stoutly in the defence of officialdom on Radio Clyde (whilst knowing the facts). The platform given to him to lecture was truly remarkable, especially after what had transpired at Tannadice.

I actually listened to the latest Radio Clyde “act” this week. I could not help think we were listening to a repeat.

The Celtic Board after that done Sterling work and most agreed done a good job.

I love Auldheid to bits because he talks so much sense and his heid is Always Clear when tackling things.

We are facing the most corrupt of entities and it was fully exposed when they dawn raided that young 17yo and incarcerated him for 7 weeks.

These are Desperate times for these entities, as Paul67 has said before, let the enemy make their mistakes and they will be Plentiful and let us pounce on them, continually.

I have not followed the songs debate religiously :) this week on CQN but there has been many good posts and points, disappointing to see Celtic people falling out over their deliberate attack on the most Positive thing about Celtic when we are Struggling for our real form.

    Ariston and on and on……

There is no doubt appeasement is what they want when they are at their strongest and that is when we have to match them. There is no doubt they still want appeasement when they are at their weakest and that is where we have to out-manoeuvre them.

I have always said that the Men, Women and Children who have lived in the troubles gives me most of my thoughts on whether we should sing the songs/addons IN Celtic Park. Neil Lennon is not the first man from the North to say leave them outside. That will do for me as thankfully I have never had to live in such an oppressive Police State.

Get those 3 points early tomorrow Neil and send them a message.

The regs. wouldn’t have a clue, as long as I pay the spark in the village for a cert, he will sign it off with the leccy co, if yer man does the work there is no charge for a cert.

Everything is done in singles in plastic tubbing, and in nearly every room there is a JB, no ring mains, all radials, and you have to do what they do or no cert.

They supply you with a live and a neutral, no earth, there is a good argument for not supplying an earth, it causes as many probs as having one, personally, I bang a rod into the ground for my own piece of mind.

Been a while since I worked as a spark in britland or Ireland, 16th ed was the last I remember, though I did stuff within the oil industry which would have been a bit more taxing.

I thought the Spanish were years ahead, i.e. no earths with the use of RCDs etc simple wiring. Used to fix my brothers wiring/fixtures when visiting his pub thru the years, un-insulated screwdrivers and the odd touch with my finger on the cable to prove polarity.

Got to say their outside utility wiring is a mess imo

Do you want the truth, seriously, I could give you my interpretation of what I think will happen, and I have been saying it for a while, the similarities to NI back in te 70’s are so, so close to be well scary, It could well be easier to see what is happening from afar, and if the new legislation gets passed, which I think is a formality, there could well be bad times ahead.

If you notice the posts from the bhoys who live within the 6 counties, to a man they agree that things in scotland mirror what happened 40 odd years ago in the 6.

As to why, I think it’s obvious, they need someting to hate.

  16. Very late I know but I felt I ought to respond to your previous article Paul…

Sorry pal but I’m one of the dissenters.

Neil is wrong to wade headlong into this debate and his actions, whilst they may well have the best interests of the club at heart, they will not, in my humble opinion, serve the best interests of the club. Neil’s words give succour to those who would divide the Celtic support. They help to pave the way for evermore oppressive actions by the establishment against the radical section of our support. Judged on that premise alone they are indefensible.

Personally (as reported) I find Neil’s words far too establishment orientated. He says these undefined chants have no part of our history, our traditions. Excuse me? Let me get this straight here, Neil is suggesting that our Irish heritage, which he acknowledges, precludes Irish republicanism? Celtic sells itself on an Irish heritage; it makes serious profit of the green and white, the tricolour, let the people sing, etc. now, for me, you can’t have your cake and gobble it. An Irish heritage that delegitimises republicanism? Seriously Neil?

Neil, the Celtic FC ‘body corporate’ and the Scottish establishment may all share an understanding of Irishness that precludes republicanism, that judges the very mention of the IRA (of whatever era) ‘offensive’ but the fact remains that thousands of Celtic supporters do not share this perception.

Let’s be clear. Our songs are not racist, our songs are not sectarian and, believe it or not, thousands of Celtic fans would challenge the apparent a priori truth that they are ‘illicit’ or ‘offensive’. Sorry Neil, you don’t have my support when you assist the establishment’s criminalisation of Celtic supporters and the demonisation of republican songs.

    Let the people sing…

  17. NL’s decision to give an interview to The Sun was puzzling. Could a deal have been made that they wouldn’t write the story about “The Players Lounge” in exchange for the “scoop” ?
