They want to get rid of him

‘They’ want to get rid of him.  Not all of them, by any measure, I’ve seen Neil Lennon welcomed as an old friend by some whose allegiances lie a long way from Celtic Park, but to some he represents an opportunity to indulge in the kind of prejudice which was once widely accepted in Scotland.

In this instance I’m not talking about the idiot football fans, there are lots of idiot football fans, just waiting for an opportunity to present their credentials.  You can meet them wearing any colours.  The people who showed their true colours today were in charge of stewarding guests at Tynecastle – and Neil Lennon was a guest.

It’s a horrible place.  The day the flats are built cannot come soon enough. I expect a robust response from Aberdeen, as well as life bans. I expect nothing from Hearts.

  1. 67 sorry man went and watched that 12 yrs a slave. Jesus Christ makes you think. And it did make me think. Intolerance is intolerance and hatred is hatred. We live in a country and I mean the uk not a million miles from that place

  2. Utterly disgusted by the events in Tynecastle and I hope Celtic are preparing an investigation via Police Scotland into the disgraceful behaviour of Aberdeen’s fans, not for the first time.

The Aberdeen ‘statement’ adds insult to injury and should be followed up swiftly by a declaration of intent not a statement from Celtic .

Celtic are quick to condemn our own it’s time for action from the club, lets hope they do the right thing.

PFayr, I know mate. She’s been kept well abreast of the whole absurdity in the way the legal system has treated Neil Lennon and his various attackers and for one who was focussing on qualifying I think it confused her, hence she’s already buggered off out of Scotland to pursue war criminals.

    Justice has failed this country.

  5. I see on the back of the mail, it says that spit, coins and BOTTLES were thrown at Lenny and Gary.

Does anybody think Scotland is mature enough to be independent. Today is another insight into what protection Catholics can expect in Alex’s free state. Those uppity taigs the GB singing songs of their heritage… Let’s draft new legislation and make it an offence inside football grounds. March up and down the roads of Scotland openly displaying your hatred? Batter in.

Will Alex’s storm troopers be conducting any dawn raids on the back of NFL’s treatment today. I think we know the answer to that.

  18. This is from sky’s website. No doubt submitted by the sevco many of the sky scotland team. Note how they’ve worded it from title onwards, it reads that Celtic are the aggressor(for claiming this) and then try to undermine our club’s “claim” by saying the Police Scotland haven’t heard anything. I would release a statement saying there’s no point reporting it to the police as the judge will let the guys off anyway and you Ar$eholes in the press and media will twist the story to hide Scotland’s bigoted problem either that or your revel in it.

“Celtic claim Aberdeen fans spat at Neil Lennon at Tynecastle

Celtic have criticised the behaviour of Aberdeen fans after claims that Neil Lennon was spat on and pelted with coins at Tynecastle.

The Hoops boss was reportedly targeted by Dons fans while watching Aberdeen’s 4-0 Scottish League Cup semi-final win over St Johnstone.

Lennon’s agent, Martin Reilly, told BBC Scotland that Lennon was forced to leave Tynecastle in the 62nd minute after he had coins thrown at him and was spat upon.

Lennon was sitting in the main stand, yards above the technical area where he was attacked by a Hearts fan during a game in 2011. The stand was housing Aberdeen fans on Saturday.

A Celtic spokesperson said: “Clearly it is totally unacceptable for the Celtic manager to be treated in this way.

“Neil has complimented the way in which the situation was handled by stewarding staff at Tynecastle.

“We have an excellent relationship with Aberdeen Football Club and we are sure they will look into this matter.”

Aberdeen, who reached their first cup final since 2000, issued a statement on their website asking supporters to report those responsible for abusing Lennon.

The statement read: “The support we enjoyed at Tynecastle was absolutely fantastic and helped to create an incredible atmosphere that the manager and players acknowledged played a major part in what was wonderful day and occasion for Aberdeen Football Club.

“However, it would appear that a tiny minority within the main stand behaved in a manner that is completely unacceptable and has absolutely no place in football.

“We would urge anyone who has any information as to the identity of those responsible to get in touch with the club in order that appropriate action can be taken.”

Quoted on the BBC Scotland website, Reilly said: “I’m absolutely raging about the treatment of Neil, about the stewarding and the fans’ behaviour. It’s scandalous that Neil is treated like this.”

Police Scotland said they had received no reports surrounding the incident.

A spokesperson said: “Police in Edinburgh have received no reports relating to assaults and abuse of anyone associated with Celtic Football Club or Heart of Midlothian Football Club following the match at Tynecastle.”

  26. Martim 1980,

You would think that the Aberdeen statement alone would be grounds for Police Scotland to investigate. You would think that there were no police or stewards there. Unbelievable.

I repeat, although the Aberdeen statement may not go far enough for some ( There may be legal advice on this, which advises against saying sorry ) at least they have acknowledged the unacceptable behaviour.

Officially Celtic have not yet acknowledged it happened. I think at least a preliminary statement was warranted and Celtic have missed a turn.

Hopefully when I wake up this will have changed dramatically.

I’m not savvy to PS’s procedure’s but I would have thought as Swinecastle is licensed to hold a sporting event ie a football match either the stadium head of security,or Licensee or, indeed, the security company responsible for stewarding(who were contracted by the SFA/SPFL) would be duty bound to report such incidents to Police as standard as part of their licence agreement.

I hope for the good of this crazy place there is total condemnation tomorrow, but I don’t see it, sadly.

Against my better judgement I thought I’d check the main Scottish gutter press for any report on the treatment of Neil Lennon. Nope not a jot.

I did find this story though

“Castaway lost at sea for 16 MONTHS washes up on reef after 8,000 mile trip eating turtles”.

When he was rescued he was half alive and his first barely decipherable words were “is kevj still off oot”.

    We have free healthcare.

Ernie (the bigot) Lynch wants us to join England’s lurch to the right.

Because anything a Scotsman says is wrong.

  32. Sometime in the early 2000s, I arrived at the Celtic social club in Barrowfield to catch the 2nd half of a reserve fixture between us and the dead club.

I walked behind the Social Club to the pitch around 70 yards away. I was behind a group of 3 who had arrived just before me and were heading in the same direction. As I caught up with them I could see that it was Dick Advocaat, the then Rangers manager, and two of his mates (they did not look like bodyguards) who came to watch their reserves in action. We all arrived at the pitch together and took up a position to watch the 2nd half together. They did not walk round to talk to the reserve coaches on the far side or make their presence known officially. They were just watching a game like myself. They were in a section of the crowd, quite a small crowd, no more than 200 or so, mostly consisting of Celtic fans.

Though he was a recognisable face amongst a partisan crowd, not one word was said to him and no hassle did he receive. I was no more than 5 yards from him at all times. He left with his pals around 5 minutes from the end while I stayed to the end. It was a fairly uneventful half. It was 1:1 when we arrived and that was the final score.

The point was that no Celtic fan even considered talking to him far less abusing him and the possibility of receiving hassle did not seem to enter Advocaat’s mind as he watched the game.

That is how it should be.

I could have chosen to be “attracted” to a hostile position against Dick Advocaat. In fact, I had no strong emotions to him then or now. I gave myself no excuse to hate.

The persona that has built up around Neil Lennon has largely been the work of our enemies and the so-called neutral media. A few of our own have piled in and called him a “corner boy” but most of our criticism has been ill-informed assessments of his managerial ability and attributions about his bravery from people who never attempted anything more ambitious than crossing a road.

Every attack and every display of intolerance is designed to make Neil dislike his successful tenure at our club. If Neil was a failing manager, he would not attract half the bile he gets.

I know there are other factors at play but I am heartened at the supportive response it has generated in our fans. It should not have to take an attack to galvanise our support around Neil but it has.

We have every right to be angry but I will not focus my anger on Aberdeen FC nor Graham Spiers nor Hearts stewards and police (at least, until, they comment and report on the situation).

I, unreservedly, condemn the Aberdeen fans who behaved in this way, on a day where there club was winning an important match 4:0. They, and the mindset they represent, are what I object to.

No Aberdeen fan attending the cup tie on 8th February should be subject to direct abuse by any of us; they do not own the sins of others.

We need to support our manager and insist that the authorities deal with the serial abusers in our midst.
