Think what you will of Celtic, Gladback won’t fancy it

284

Playing away domestically after a Champions League away game is statistically the time you are most likely to drop points, so Manchester City’s defeat at Tottenham was unsurprising.  The manner of Barcelona’s defeat at Celta de Vigo, 4-3 after being 3-0 down at halftime, was distinctly out of character, but showed signs of their exertions in Germany on Wednesday.

Borussia Monchengladback’s 4-0 defeat at Schalke, who were bottom of the Bundesliga having lost all previous five games, was the shock of German football this week.  Gladback have one game before coming to Celtic Park, home to Hamburg, who took over Schalke’s mantle at the bottom of the table, with one point from six games this season.

Borussia are the only team from Celtic’s Champions League group who will be rattled by their weekend reversal; Barcelona and Manchester City will take the defeat in their stride.  It’s unlikely they will drop points to Hamburg on 15th October.  Their defeat to Barcelona was the first competitive game at home they’ve failed to win since January, while it’s been straight away defeats this season for Hamburg, but as we know, playing bottom of the league is a no-win scenario for a Champions League team.

There will be a hangover from that 4-0 defeat, one which will be allowed to fester for a fortnight.  Think what you will of Celtic, but the prospect of travelling to Glasgow in two weeks will not be relished in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Before heading off for the Great Scottish Run yesterday I read through the donations to the Celtic Foundation.  There’s nothing more effective than putting the wind at your back than knowing a lot of people put whatever they could afford into supporting the Foundation’s cause.

It was a brilliant day.  The green competitors’ t-shirts with the Foundation’s Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty written across the back were storming through the streets of Glasgow in force.  Well done to all.

Thanks to everyone who supported all of us.  The MyDonation’s page hasn’t closed, yet, but this will be the last call, honestly!

Thanks also the lady who while out pushing a go-chair with her child in town yesterday, took off my shoe and bent back my toe.  Over and above the call of duty – but it was that kind of day.

I suspect that BR would have been appointed irrespective of the fortunes of the team from Ibrox.

A sea change was required after the league Cup semi-final draw. The major shareholder and board were, IMHO, aware that a different approach and high profile manager were required to move the club forward (and for the sceptics, this MAY simply have been a business decision).

A reminder of how disparate the Celtic support is.

My experience is no doubt atypical but I don’t think I know many Celtic fans who wouldn’t be familiar with the song.

No! I am going to keep you wondering for a while yet 0:-)

I think the point I was trying to make is that coming to Celtic, and chasing the money, are not mutually exclusive.

I am not using the phrase “chasing the money” in a derogatory manner. I use it in a professional sense.

As long as he keeps banging them in, I hope he stays.

Larsson was an exception. In every sense of the word.

I realised during the second that it was never going to work – round about the time Commons disgraced the jersey in Malmo.

The pressure had led him (Deila, not Commons) to ditch his footballing philosophy and that reflected itself in the terrible fare on offer.

In hindsight, the board should have replaced him after the first season.

    Virgil ?

I suspect he may have stayed.

Being familiar with the song and being able to sing along are entirely different.

Witness the mass mis-singing of some lines, for example:

“Shall shelter the death of orange slaves” instead of “Shall shelter the despot or the slave.”

Ernie I remember travelling to and away game on the supporters bus one day – Aberdeen so it was an early start with a kerry oot!

So we were going through the usual repertoire and a young lad in front of me stood up and started the Broad Black Brimmer with those immortal words. He was drenched in various (mainly cheap) lagers as we all spat out our beer whilst laughing loudly. It was about 5 minutes before we could explain the error of his ways!

RD was appointed above his own capability. The reasons for which are a mystery to me,but not to some of the power brokers.

I won’t condemn him for the failure of others, who seem to have survived criticism-free.

    Absolutely right , mate.

The criticism should be reserved for those who did not recognise his inadequacy and take action sooner.

    Much sooner.

As high noon approached, the gunslingers’ senses sharpened.

There were a few experienced “podium chasers” eying each other with a steely gaze.

He fingered his refresh key, just to make sure to himself that it was still there. He knew it was, but this was part of the ritual. A ritual, that until now, had served him well.

He swallowed, but his mouth was dry. He watched the others as the volume of the Ennio Morricone background music was raised.

He had been in this situation many times before, but the tension never left the occasion. It was that tension that had kept him alive in the past.

The clock moved irrevocably towards the showdown. Nobody knew exactly when the new post would arrive, but arrive it would, and only one would stand tall at that time.

    Tick tick, tick tick…………….

Having a laugh at ourselves has always been our greatest strength.

  14. It’s always the same when a young Celtic player, especially a foreign one, begins to show sparkling form and make a name for himself.

CQN is awash with supporters bemoaning his imminent and certain departure for pastures new.

    He’ll be off in January.

He’ll move on in the Summer.

We won’t be able to hold onto him.

They’re even discussing the transfer of a 13 year-old prodigy to a bigger and better league, just when Celtic begin to show faith in him.

    All wishful thinking.

Methinks some people are desperate for fresh board-bashing material.
