This guy was the real deal

334

I had to smile at Simon Donnelly’s comparison of Henrik Larsson to Kenny Dalglish. Until Henrik came along, The New Dalglish was the reference point for any great prospect. And a few not-so-great ones.

Simon himself was one prominent recipient of this title. Back in 1994 Lou Macari’s Celtic were as bad as we’d been since the 50s when the teenage Donnelly burst onto the scene with five goals in the final 12 league games of the season. He was famously hailed as the new Dalglish, a comparison which was shown to be absurd during the barren season which followed.

When Henrik pitched up in Glasgow in 1997 all those comparisons must have crystallised for Simon. This guy was the real deal.

Although some starts shone brighter than others, both of them played their part in the historic title win in 1998. Celtic fans will never know a time like that again. When Simon, Henrik and friends gather for the Foundation game in May, more than a few of us will recall that titanic season.

On the subject of memorable league title wins…….

    Reading “We’ll Always Have Lisbon: Celtic’s Glory Year 1967” Paperback – 10 Mar 2017

by David Frier (Author), Pat Woods (Author), signed by the former. ( Muito obrigado, David!).

Great read, so far. Here’s someone’s review on Amazon.

“This is a well-researched and well-written account of Celtic’s triumph in Lisbon in 1967. It will be of interest to Celtic supporters and non-Celtic supporters alike, with great insight into the events before, during and after the game. It gives a view of how European football was before the corporates took over. A must-read for all those interested in the European game.”

It’s like getting my treasured copy of ‘Celtic Triumphant: A souvenir of a wonderful year’ (Ian Peebles) upgraded for the Fiftieth!

  6. Has anyone managed to work out what Sevco are up to?

3 directors resigning from the Football board.

Is this due to show separation between the Main Board and the Football Club Board?

Is this due to a likely insolvency event ?

With the debt between the companies, what company is likely to suffer the event. RIFC or TRFC?

  8. As for the 3 Sevco directors leaving the sunken ship….I’m confused….did they jump or were they pushed ?

i see that Ratface Nacho Novo is terribly upset at not even being given an interview for the post as “Number 3” at Ipox ?

This clown really wants to chuck it, as he has long since been an embarrassment to himself and his family. He appears to be unable to “let go” of his FORMER connections with the animals fc. This strongly suggests that this chump really needs therapy…big time asap.

Whats next…his failed application to have Broxi Bear sacked and him as the “New Club….New Mascot” employee ?

What a feckin sad case Novo is..then again he always was a thick, cheating, saddo with very limited football ability.

  9. I see another swathe of International ‘Friendlies’ tonight…..what is the point ?

Don’t think any of our Bhoys are involved so hopefully they’ll all be ‘home’ or on their way, and that all arrive back fit and uninjured, and ready to give us something to celebrate on Sunday.

On another note, I heard that FIFA will pay the wages of Seamus Coleman for up to a year ( and up to £140,000’ish per week ). Wasn’t aware that this was in place, but seems logical when you think about it. Presumably FIFA or UEFA did the same for John Kennedy, and I assume also that it was their insurance that would have paid out when he had to give the game up ?

  10. Can anyone explain why there seems to be some discord now between King and the Ibrox Board, as is being reported?

I know he’s a shyster, but did the Takeover Appeal Board decision really wake some Directors up or is there something other than this that I’m missing?

    Cheers.

I’m sure if Bankier, Livingston and Brian Wilson had resigned last night, the Scottish media would have been all over it like a bad rash. Nada so far, about the Sevco situation on the Beeb website.

King wanted the 3 bears (sic) to help him fund the forced offer to other shareholders seemingly, they told him to foxtrot oscar.I also read guys leaving the board due to possible liabilities…

Some disagreement in the pub last Sunday regarding whether or not Celtic won the league at home in any of the 9 in a row campaigns. Therefore according to Celtic Wiki, we did it once, in 1971

    CELTIC’S CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING VENUES 1966-74

    66 FIR PARK MOTHERWELL W 1-0

My only memory of this game was the TV cameras showing team celebrations and fans on the roof.

    67 IBROX DEIDCO D 2-2

Listened on tranny. Biggest recollection was Helenio Herrera being centre of attention pre Lisbon, and Jinky’s masterclass of course.

    68 EAST END PARK DUNFERMLINE W 2-1

Went straight from school, excitement unbelievable. Witnessed thousands locked out but my uncle lifted me over into main stand. Never forget the packed crowd, fans up floodlights and on the roof, again.

    69 RUGBY PARK KILMARNOCK D 2-2

Vague memory of Gemmell’s last gasp equaliser, courtesy of tranny.

    70 TYNECASTLE HEARTS D 0-0

Went with my da on James Welsh bus, Gorbals. Bit of an anti-climax after missing a penalty if I remember right. I think our minds were more on Feyenoord.

    71 CELTIC PARK AYR UTD W 2-0

At this game but it was a formality after Aberdeen made it easier losing at Falkirk. A very difficult Pittodrie draw the previous week was vital.

    72 METHIL EAST FIFE W 3-0

Result came through on TV. Again a foregone conclusion.

    73 EASTER ROAD HIBS W 3-0

Brilliant day. Pre match Edinburgh pub crawl with mates. Great view from the big terracing. Kenny and Dixie ran riot.

    74 BROCKVILLE FALKIRK D 1-1

Not much memory of this except the usual mad crush.

I’ve said a wee prayer for them both.

    I’ll keep you posted.

I can’t see Park, Murray and Gilligan resigning on a point of principle…..they don’t have any.

Therefore it could be on a point of separation betwixt club and Holding Vessel or potty, as it was known in our house.

  18. Thanks ghuys!

So no one of note then!

    It just gives and gives……………..

This is all I could find:

“Park, Paul Murray and Gilligan have all sensationally walked away from Sevco Rangers.”….and that was from a CQN post. I haven`t seen anything anywhere else.

No problem! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Some really interesting new insights for me in the book, including the chapter looking at the reasons for Celtic’s popularity in Lisbon, as shown by the great welcome they got from a crowd of Portuguese kids at their first training session at “a rustic ground” next to the Estádio Nacional.

    Not sure if yours was a direct reply to me but either way;

Was King not found to be acting in concert with the directors now being asked for money? Surely he’s been asking them for money all along.
