This is just the next step for The Celtic Triangle

493

You win five-in-a-row and go 24 points clear but it’s not until you propose to build an architecturally pleasing hotel and museum that the penny begins to drop with some that you are, in fact, an exceptionally well run football club.

I loved reading how we are interpreted on the other side of the city in yesterday’s CQN Magazine article, Simply Depressed:

“Commercially trolling us now. Light years ahead in income plans.

“It’s a source of revenue (and a fantastic bit of PR)….. It can pull an entire local community together and actually create new followers.

“If we ever get our act together, it will take years if at all to get anywhere near them financially, we can slaughter Lhiewell (sic.) all we want, but the bottom line is he is delivering for them.

“It’s a good initiative, having a hotel allows you to have certain events that were not previously possible. Media and corporate sponsorship will increase, new hospitality packages will be created, money from concerts will increase, supporters will hire function rooms and stay the nights more often.

“Just feel we are getting left behind commercially and will be seen as the poor football relation in Glasgow…this one highlights the growing gap between us and them it’s depressing.”

Pulling this together has taken years. Internal voices have dampened expectations during this period, a few times over the years I’ve heard: “There’s a long way to go, remember “floating pitches and super-casinos”” – a valuable lesson, thanks, Sir David. Celtic didn’t want to break ranks on this until the necessary money and commercial partnerships were lined up.

Don’t think this will see The Celtic Triangle finished, either, this is just the next step. The club have learned lessons from every noteworthy stadium of every sport in the world. European club football facilities miles behind where top US sports are at present.

We’re not there yet, but we’re on the road, and this is one journey that’s very enjoyable.

Yeah, the ’86 official film ‘Hero’ is a great watch, with the wee genius in the starring role, obviously.

Read back the comments on the Brazil 82 team and the great match with Italy that year. Still got my VHS recording of the game – othet than Germby v France three days later thete has not beem a World Cup game since that eas anyehete near as good. Btaxil were porous in defence and Serginho was a comparatively week centre. Italy deservee to win and had a perfectly good 4th goal by Antognoni disalllowed near the end.

There is a biography of Socrates next month which has been writtem by a guy called Andy Downie – a fanatical Hibbie- who used to play in an amateur team I ran back in the day.

  8. Good morning friends and a Big Happy Friday from a clear, pastel skied, slightly frosty but otherwise beautiful East Kilbride.

A win for Inverness tonight coupled with a defeat for Hamilton tomorrow will see those teams swap league positions and leave Accies in the relegation spot. I also notice that Inverness have only scored 4 goals less than their opponents tonight. And there are a few GFS competitiors hoping that that particular gap will be reduced ;-)

  9. Condolences and thoughts and prayers to Four Green Fields, BundoranBhoy and their families. Met your mum once guys and she was a lovely wee woman.

If your starting point is that Celtic are being run for the sole objective of enriching PL then whatever meaning you give to events will be coloured by that perspective.

I can think of many reasons why matters happened as they did and am not persuaded that is the starting point.

Whether you wish to change your perception is indeed up to you, as is being open to the idea you might be wrong and other factors might have played their part.

You say the Brazil defence was ‘porous’. Maybe in that particular game, but, prior to that, they had only lost 3 goals in 4 games, scoring 13 in the process. Italy was only a great Dino Zoff save away from shipping 3 in that game too, and, if you’re looking at the tournament overall, before the Brazil game, Italy’s attack in comparison was a bit toothless, having scored only 4 in the previous 4 games.

I don’t think a Brazil equaliser at the end would have been undeserved, and in the format being played, a draw was all Brazil required to progress. Maybe that was the problem for them that day, mentally speaking.

I’d also ask, had Italy been knocked out at that stage, who, even in Italy, would still remember that team, never mind still be talking about them with such fondness, as most football fans do with that Brazil team?

    Hail! Hail!

I lived in Shawlands 82 and will never forget the carnival atmosphere and cavalcade of cars passing through, Italians celebrating, green white and red everywhere. The Mearns must be full of well off Tallies I thought.

A few weeks later another carnival mob passed through and left the place like a khazi.

Two very contrasting styles in that great game. Italy with the Juve back five against a Brazilian midfield to front as good as the 70 side. I doubt if Italy’s best two mid/forward players Antognoni and Rossi would have got into the opposition eleven.

And so it proved that dodgy defending cost Brazil. The Italians to be fair generally possess the big game mentality especially when the odds are stacked against them.

As gutted as I was seeing the wonderful Brazilians go out, I was delighted to see Italy win the final, against in my opinion, a slightly stronger Germany team.,and with something to spare.

  22. Beatbhoy @ 9.24

Certainly had Brazil equalised it woud not have been a travesty but on the day Italy played a better game I thought- the Italians had had a wretched tourney up to then but they came to life that day and in the rest of the competition. I think that Brazil’s second equaliser- a screamer from Falcao did make them relax fatally as they were all over the place at the corner which led to Rossi’s third goal. Had Brazil needed to win rather than draw who knows?

The Italian team had the likes of Zoff, Cabrini, Scirea, Tardell, Antognoni and Rossi who had excelled in 78 until reverting to Cattenaccio v Holland and got what they deserved but they were great players too. But not perhaps poetry in motion like Zico, Falcao?unior, Cerezo, Eder and the incomparable Socrates I would agree.

It’s a sign of the times that only Falcao (Roma) played outside the Brazilian league. I think the whole Italy side played in serie A.
