This is just the next step for The Celtic Triangle

493

You win five-in-a-row and go 24 points clear but it’s not until you propose to build an architecturally pleasing hotel and museum that the penny begins to drop with some that you are, in fact, an exceptionally well run football club.

I loved reading how we are interpreted on the other side of the city in yesterday’s CQN Magazine article, Simply Depressed:

“Commercially trolling us now. Light years ahead in income plans.

“It’s a source of revenue (and a fantastic bit of PR)….. It can pull an entire local community together and actually create new followers.

“If we ever get our act together, it will take years if at all to get anywhere near them financially, we can slaughter Lhiewell (sic.) all we want, but the bottom line is he is delivering for them.

“It’s a good initiative, having a hotel allows you to have certain events that were not previously possible. Media and corporate sponsorship will increase, new hospitality packages will be created, money from concerts will increase, supporters will hire function rooms and stay the nights more often.

“Just feel we are getting left behind commercially and will be seen as the poor football relation in Glasgow…this one highlights the growing gap between us and them it’s depressing.”

Pulling this together has taken years. Internal voices have dampened expectations during this period, a few times over the years I’ve heard: “There’s a long way to go, remember “floating pitches and super-casinos”” – a valuable lesson, thanks, Sir David. Celtic didn’t want to break ranks on this until the necessary money and commercial partnerships were lined up.

Don’t think this will see The Celtic Triangle finished, either, this is just the next step. The club have learned lessons from every noteworthy stadium of every sport in the world. European club football facilities miles behind where top US sports are at present.

We’re not there yet, but we’re on the road, and this is one journey that’s very enjoyable.

We visited last September and stayed at one of the Valamar hotels on the peninsula just outside the city. Regular cheap buses into the old town takes about 20 minutes or so. We absolutely loved our visit, the old town is stunning as are the Islands off the coast.

I think you are right. I think it was only after that World Cup that Italy allowed players in who were younger than 26 or 27 as the likes of Rummenigge, Platini, Boniek and Zico were playing in Serie A very soon afterwards. Pre 82 I think Falcao and Liam Brady were about the only non Italians in Serie A

That is because I do not have the information to rebut and cannot be arsed looking for it because even if what you say is true it only proves we all find what we want to (or not.)

However serendipity turned up in a post by Timbhoy I think which if I recall properly says NL went back on the deal to have RD as assistant which was the plan NL had accepted.

I have no idea if that is true or not but if it is it does lend a slightly different perspective to your view.

My point was about how we make up our minds on information and being open minded enough to accept there may be unknowns that might persuade us if we had them to reconsider.

I simply do not have verifiable information on the ins and outs of RD hire nor the inclination to check to prove you wrong and me right.

That was never the purpose of my initial post but it obviously triggered something in you to think it was.

    Let’s leave it there.

  6. G67- good left sided midfielders are hard to come by, McGinn has a lot pf improvement in him IMO, it also helps when you have supporters in the jerseys.HH

  7. ITALIA ..

17 years in italy have taught me that many football fans care much more for the club they support than they do for the national team . It is also apparent that many fans rue the failures in preference to celebrating the successes . Yes – they won the World Cup four times but that will never erase the shame of losing to North Korea in 66.. Watch film of Italian Club football in seasons 66- 67 , 67 -68 etc and if there is a player on the park who played v North Korea you will hear chants of Korea -Korea -Korea.. One of the walls on the perimeter of Napoli’s stadium has 2 pieces of graffiti — ” Liverpool – Grazie ” -( that is regularly removed and is then done again ) / the other one features an image of a man hanging on a rope from gallows and says this -. A MORTE FABBRI ( Death to Fabbri ) Fabbri was the manager of Italy in 66..

One flaw with the argument that we should have taken him from St Mirren is that he wouldn’t have got first team football here, and possibly wouldn’t have continued his development as well as he has.

If he costs say a million now. It would probably cost us close to that to have employed him for two years in our development squad?

  9. CRAIGELLACHIE10 on 24TH FEBRUARY 2017 10:39 AM

Agree, he would have been wasted with us last season. Far better playing regularly and if he costs £2m we’re signing a better player than he was when he left St Mirren, and an internationalist.

  10. Craig- i thought the same too at the time, but he would have walked in to RD’s team of the previous 2 seasons IMO, he looks the type who would improve working with better players HH

Interesting. Would you say that the hatred between Napoli and the North is comparable to anything here, or worse?

  13. As much as I like both McGregor and Henderson , I would be delighted if Brendan signed McGinn . I think McGinn is a player who , apart from obvious talent , has incredible energy and most importantly , always wants on the ball . Top players never shirk responsibility .

For any mug punters ,who like a bet ………Celtic Park runs in the 3.05 @ Warwick today.

Maybe not a mugs bet ? Currently 3/1 favourite . Gamble responsibly . HH

Loony tune Napoli Ultras have serious hatred for their Roma and Juventus equivalents . That hatred is reciprocated in spades.. Seriously violent stuff — knifes / guns etc . … People die ….. Ultra related violence in Italy is much worse than anything in Scotland .

Many Italians have a very negative, stereotyped view of the city of Naples – Mafia / thieves / dossers , spongers etc .. Napoli away games often feature the home support chanting — Africans / Africans -welcome to Europe. .Games in Napoli v teams from Torino / Milano see the away support being welcomed thus – Germans /Germans Welcome To Italy

  16. We are UEFA’s bitch, the idiots need to stop, but we seem to get fined when other teams don’t.

  17. Brendan has done Lenny a favour by praising McGinn. Lenny singled him out for criticisme after the Raith game at the weekend. What a boost for the lad to read Brendan’s comments.

Reading between the lines I don’t think Brendan will sign him. He said he was a good honest lad and good at the defensive side of things. But that wont be enough and we already have Eboue. As a ball player he isn’t anywhere near the level of Mcgregor et al.

For those who have seen more of the two players, are Mc.Ginn and Christie similar types of players?
