Time for our other two international strikers

548

10 September 2016.  Five years ago today you were almost certainly worried about the absence of Leigh Griffiths ahead of Newco visiting Celtic Park that day.  In the previous season, Leigh scored 31 league goals in 32 starts and two substitute appearances, he was on fire and the indisputable top striker in the country.  No one in Scottish football has scored at this rate since.

When he was next available for selection four games later, there was a new sheriff in town.  Moussa Dembele used those games to make sure he became indispensable to Brendan Rodger’s Celtic.  From then on, Leigh, still only 26, would be used as filler.

The prospect of a month without Kyogo Furuhashi is not the news Ange Postecoglou wanted.  Pittodrie, where we visit at the start of next month, will be testing, as will the game in Seville against Real Betis and the home tie against Bayer Leverkusen this month.  We have two other international strikers at the club, it is time for one of them to step up.

  1. Interesting to see how the GB respond to all this.

The St Als angle alone should generate a critical response.

  2. ROBERTTRESSELL.

Your contribution @ 10.09 is, imo, the best so far on the leaving of Dominic McKay. And that of 10.12 is also right. Today is match day. Let’s get behind our team.

  3. Maybe Dom’s heart wasn’t in the job, possibly after banners being unfurled about him before he even officially started his role, maybe lurking on here and other Celtic social media and reading the bile. And the biggie for me, attending ipox a few weeks ago and seeing the Hun hordes at first hand.

Was it just to high profile for him?

Anyways it’s all about today and I’m predicting another goal fest. HH ☘

  4. I think it’s completely disingenuous to suggest that Dominic Mckay was a poor appointment and was not up to the job.

He had a very lengthy ” handover” to iron out suitability or unresolved issues.

    Something has changed.

    HH.

  5. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Has anyone been arrested for the arson attack on our previous CEO’s home yet?

Coming up for four months now since it happened.

  6. @ LETS ALL DO THE HUDDLE on 11TH SEPTEMBER 2021 8:59 AM

“if Dom has signed a non-disclosure agreement for a big pile of cash then he is part of the problem”

If you leave any high level business or profession under strained circumstances, a NDA is signed. It’s customary. The contract you sign contains provisions pertaining to confidentiality, termination of your employment, restrictive covenants etc.

  7. Celtic cyberspace quoting various newspapers today, with ‘we understand……’ style quotes.

That would suggest it was simply a difference of opinion and nothing untoward for Mr McKay personally.

Equally, all media seem to report that the sharp suited man/ toom tabard is blameless.

Hopefully, CQN articles will avoid such lazy journalism.

What has gone wrong and why? Who is responsible for another appointment gone wrong? What is the future model and direction if the club?

I hope to read no more about what the fans have to do. The fans have done plenty. Before, during and after lockdown, the fans have more than played their part.

    Can other parties say likewise?

  8. I’m hearing that Dom beat DD 2&1 at the golf. That’s the reason for his departure.

Actually, I made that up. Just like a lot of what I’m reading.

I’m surprisingly really disappointed he has gone, as I don’t normally care about boards or club politics.

But I did think there was an amicability between Dom and Ange and hope Ange isn’t looking for his next gig already.

  9. DD didn’t know much about DMcK when he was announced for the CEO job.

However when DD did get to know him — DD didn’t take a shine to him.

Personality clash / DMcK lack of a brown nose — not sure.

Anyway DD no likey — DMcK gone.

    The Irish Raj does brutal.

No-one else was — seemingly — involved in the making of this pot boiler.

Not a great source but more credible than other alternatives.

  10. Manager not going to miss the opportunity to manage Celtic because of change of personnel in this role.

The rhetoric that Ange leaves is opportunist trouble making imo to try and create tension in the support…a la msn hun pr … some swallowing it; hook, line and sinker.

Cody ^predicted it when we didn’t sign anyone…then we did sign players…Ange still hete…so now he predicts again….and he’ll do it again….

Board will be happy watching Ange ball too and they signed off on him….but nobody wants to read that.

  11. The Battered Bunnet on

Bada, there’s no doubt he was well considered at SRU, but two things about “the money he brought in”.

First, he was part of the executive team, not the leader. That’s very important. He didn’t define the strategy, set the direction and deliver the plan. He did was he was told, and by many accounts, did it well.

Second, the money he brought in is – given the above – difficult to assign to an individual, even more so when the But let’s allow that he was responsible for all increases in revenue during his time as No2 to the CEO.

In 2016 SRU revenue was £47.3M. By May 2020 – his last full year – that had risen to £55.4M. There’s a Covid interuption to business that year with one home match in the 6 Nations postponed. The previous year revenue was £61M.

The two big revenue increases came from ticketing and broadcasting, each worth +£5M/year versus 2016. Commercial and sponsorship income has largely been static over the past 5 years.

SRU is pretty steady state business wise, and is profitable but not exceptionally. It’s a nice business doing nice things that are unremarkable.

Exceptionally, in May 2020 the SRU received a dividend of £8.38M from the investment into Pro14 by CVC Partners. That’s tidy money, but is one-off standing other conditions and future investment. McKay was Chairman of Pro14 at the time and given much credit for the deal. Well done Dom.

Allowing that whatever money he brought in wasn’t a fluke, revenue grew at 5% per year during his term and he brought in £8M for the shareholding in Pro14. Am I missing something?

Clearly I am because whatever he did at SRU was considered sufficiently impressive to get the gig at Celtic.

But I’m scratching my head here. From this angle, the appointment looks like a piece of very poor judgment by the leadership team at Celtic. You might add that to the pile of pigs’ ears that has accumulated on the floor of the boardroom at Celtic in the past 2 years.

    Hey ho.

  12. TBB @ 11.44

Compare and contrast with PL’s record with us.

    Static turnover — 2004 to 2021.

And that takes into account the effects of the pandemic.

Over the same period football has grown exponentially globally.

We have just tread water with the only thing growing being PL’s wage packet / bonus.

DMcK did a good job at the SRU — he was the hands on guy delivering stuff while the CEO kept the board sweet and gorged on prawn sandwiches.

    PL just gorged on bonuses.

  13. O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,

What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight

O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,

O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep

Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,

In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,

’Tis the star-spangled banner – O long may it wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,

That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion

A home and a Country should leave us no more?

Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand

Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation!

Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land

Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto – “In God is our trust,”

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

  14. @ THE BATTERED BUNNET on 11TH SEPTEMBER 2021 11:44 AM

Notwithstanding the above on Dom’s CV, it is more impressive than others on the Board. PL was an accountant for Clyde Port, I believe and Bankier is the chairman of a whisky business. Unsure what ingrained football knowledge they had when given their positions; in fact, Celtic do not have any senior executives with any football knowledge.

Some of the pieces in the media today are pointing towards being knocked out of CL qualifying, Ange’s comments on transfers and differences in policy/strategy decisions.

Well, we have a lamentable CL qualifying record over the last 10 years and have more than our fair share of disappointing transfer windows, so risible that the journalists are being briefed to implying these matters could stand behind the decisions.

As for change in policy – did Celtic previously have a policy? It was pretty unclear if there was in fact one.

  15. TBB – Scotland have been doing a bit better in rugby than a few years ago and that would bring in revenue.

There are a lot of fair weather fans who lose interest in the sport when results are poor.

So a 20% increase in revenue should be easily attainable if the team strings some results together.

  16. From Celts are Here – article by Stephen McGowan:

McGowan wrote in Saturdays’ print edition of the Scottish Daily Mail [Page122/123].

“In hindsight, Dominic McKay must wish he’d accepted that offer of help on the end of a phone. Peter Lawwell had a readymade crisis line on the nuts and bolts of running Celtic. And his successor chose not to call it.

“Inexperienced in the world of football transfers and rebuilding a football club, that was his first mistake. Regrettably, it wouldn’t be his last.

“Last night, the former chief operating officer of the Scottish Rugby Union paid a heavy price for his determination to go it alone when he lost the confidence of major shareholder Dermot Desmond… and jumped before he was pushed

“McKay expressed a desire to modernise and upgrade the club’s operations. He set out to be his own man. Plucked from the world of professional rugby, he knew nothing about football transfers — and he showed no inclination to accept a helping hand from those who did.”

“His ideas were incompatible with the major shareholder and the board of directors. While he felt ready for Celtic, Celtic simply weren’t ready for him. It’s unclear what this means for the modernisation of the club.”

  17. Mystery its a Mystery….. Fergal Harkin not joining……Desmond rumored to be taking on transfer business and was getting impatient……football transfer business can be pretty brutal……….as for Dom ….thought he was nice if a bit condescending when speaking to the fans ……maybe I’m a cynical old dog.

  18. I think,its my opinion,if you ask me,its my conclusion,I heard,someone told me,I’ll tell you what,knew it all along,PL,WGS,DD,anyone of these 3 ,to blame.

The Chinese Whispers continue, adding Zilch,Zero,Nada,Hee Haw to the story for the simple reason,

    No one knows EFF All.

The serial whingers will come on with their usual targets,Lynch will add his wee bit of poison, keep it stirring.Tomorrow we will still know EFF All.Good days work.Don’t forget about the game.

  19. Bhoys focus there is game in under 3 hours.

We have enough enemies out there to bemoan, sideswipe and generally bring our club down.

As Mr Ferry sang Let’s stick together, come on, come on……

    Come on the Celtic

‘If accurate, that Stephen McGowan article is a shocker.’

    ###

Is he not regarded as being Peter Lawwell’s unofficial spokesman*?

Or have I got that wrong?

    * In the MSM, obviously. Not on social media. That accolade belongs to another.

  21. Interesting to see ‘the C-suite’ getting its retaliation in first, to use an old phrase.

The hatchet job on Dom’s performance has been swift. While he may have a pay-related clause to keep ‘schtumm’, the club media briefings – ta ROLLINGSTONE – show that full and frank information flows when it suits a particular purpose. Someone said it earlier ‘ruthless’.

Criticising the just gone-CEO after a decent transfer window is a pretty bad look for image and fan relations.

They beamed when they searched and appointed a top guy, who they now claim just wasn’t top enuff.

IMO, I’d like to see Dom use the payoff to fund a legal defence; then expose what really happened; like any true Celtic fan concerned with the machinations would.

Think you may find that McGowan article was written ‘with the creative assistance’ of a Celtic insider.

Reading back it really is quite sad, but nonetheless unsurprising for this place, that so many resorting to the blind unthinking “3 points the priority”, team selections, posting song lyrics, “we get to see Celtic today” naive garbage.

The support are being completely shafted.

McKay has been basically sacked because he refused “to pick up the phone to Peter”. Lawwell and Desmond briefing the usual pet hacks the line that Lawwell involvement is social media hysteria. Which basically means that it’s not.

Operation Save The Huns still to the fore and was being jeopardised by a CEO trying to have Celtic fulfil its own potential as opposed to keeping the manky mob in the game.

AP will be gone by the summer. He won’t put up with two transfer windows with these characters.

    But never mind.

    Mon The Cellik!!!!

  23. Ernie and Squire

Unfortunately, I suspect you are both correct.

Recent events make me worry about our ability to recruit suitably experienced senior execs in the future.

    A disappointing 24 hours.

  24. My friends in Celtic,

For the duration of the game, in fact when the live article goes up the topic should be about the game and 3 points.

On this article and before the game it is absolutely fitting to talk about the biggest Celtic story that THEY gave us at 16.30 hrs on the eve of our game.

  25. I thought the huns keeper should have been off there – considering the bitton red card against morelos. Open goal must be a clear scoring opertunity.

Personally, I’m happy to see contributions from posters based on whatever they feel is most pressing.

Many will take an immediate and short term view. Others will have more of a horizon scanning approach.

Such is the democratic nature of online blogs.

I hope we win 3 points today and I also hope we have the correct structures and personnel in place to be the best version of Celtic we can be.

  28. Uncle Jimmy,

I’m on route to the game, via watering holes.
