Topping agitates for a fans’ revolt

593

“The best hope for the Scottish game? It’s in the activity the fans bring to bear on big organisations.”

“Fans don’t realise yet how much change they can bring about”.

Not the words of a blogger-agitator, the words of out-going SCFL chairman, Ralph Topping, trying to incite fans to revolt against TV companies.  In the same valedictory interview to The Scotsman, Topping acknowledged the mobilisation of fans against governance standards at the SPFL, but turned his face to the fans.

The man has been in office for 8 years but has been a virtual recluse as far as the paying public are concerned.  Now we know why, he has no filter or self-awareness.

Not good enough, Mr Topping.  You have failed to answer any of the pertinent questions (here) and despite the game being brought into significant disrepute during your tenure, you have now briefed the press that you intend to ignore Celtic’s request that matters are reviewed.

If you want to incite a revolt from football fans, you are on track.  We’ll do what we can, I promise.

  1. Let’s keep the use of bad language in check!

Lots of good posts on pertinent topics – it would be a pity to delete them.

  2. Barney, Your 10.53 post is offensive and there is no need for it.

We are all committed Celtic Supporters here & many have a lifetime of standing up for their rights & fighting for justice.

The ghuys who make the most hard line posts are not necessarily the hard men.

Knee jerk reaction is rarely the correct option, all is up for discussion here are tactics, we may differ on tactics but by & large we all want the same thing.

  3. Steven Caulker – watched a few videos on Youtube, looks the business, has all the tools and is only 25. Obviously he has some demons but he will have a Manager that knows him well and will look after him. We also have a great bunch of lads with a great togetherness and spirit. The Celtic family will make him welcome and support him along the way. On a free transfer this is no brainer, remember we took Craig Gordon from the depths after two years out of the game and look at him now.

  4. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

Maybe we should draw up a nice wee no provocation charter.

Better still why dont we send a CQN representative to Linfield with a letter that says: ‘We are so, so sorry, for provoking you with a scarf’

Thanks, Stephen Aitken thinks very highly of him. It is down to Chris now to do better in Dumbarton than he did in Dingwall. He played well against the Bankies at weekend. Fingers crossed.

If anybody is trying to tell me that a scarf is more provocative than a bottle, they can bark at the moon anytime they want.

Ive never heard so much sh*** in my life.

    Seriously, that is warped.

And to condone bottles and coins thrown at Celtic players is an outrage. Its transference and a pathetic attempt at that.

    A scarf cant provoke anybody.

    =====================

    Here is how it works.

Offense need not be given but it can be taken.

I can offend someone telling a joke that say talks about a stutter.

There is an audience of ten. Nine laugh but not the guy with the stutter.

DId I mean to offend him? Not if I did not know he had a stutter. However if I did and if I also knew that he was ashamed of it, embarrassed by it and hated to be reminded of it and cracked the joke anyway and he reacted……

Did I provoke him or not?

It doesn’t have to be a scarf it can be anything and the judgement on whether a deed was provocative depends on what is know about the audience. LG knew enough about his audience to know when he was being provocative.

Don’t get me wrong, I think folk by and large are all too ready to blame someone else for a reaction caused in them because of their inner sensitivity and should look inwards rather than blame, there is no provocation if no one is aware of the audience, but LG surely knew last night how his action would be received regardless of any abuse hurled at him and been smart enough to head for the shower.

  13. EMBRAMIKE @ 9:47 PM,

Another very good post by you, your strategy and ideas on the way forward are very sound. However a word of caution…

“Ideally if Celtic led the process, it would lend huge gravitas to the cause.”

This is a very decisive route to go down in my opinion and it’s an approach that Stewart Regan together with the current and recently past Executives of the SPL and SFA would love us to go down.

Please read carefully SR response to Joe O’Rouke…

    Dear Joe,

Thanks for your follow-up email. I’m not surprised that you take the position you do as the General Secretary of the Celtic Supporters’ Association. It’s clearly an emotive subject for supporters of Celtic.

I would like to take issue with one point you make, namely the line “have you actually asked for anyone’s opinion apart from some nameless QC?”

As this is a highly complex legal matter we have sought Senior counsel opinion and as a board are content with the advice we have been given and the decisions we have made. There are a myriad of other opinions out there on this subject, the majority of which are linked to vested interests. As such, we are minded to keep this matter objective and rely on expert opinion to aid our decision-making.

    Best wishes,

    Stewart.

NOTE: Emotive subject for Celtic supporters… myriad of opinions… vested interests…

Smacks totally of divide and rule. If the SFA or anybody else manages to make this a…

Authorities v Celtic &/or Rangers v Celtic issue 2/3rds of the support for the Review will evaporate.

Believe me, Stewart Regan would like nothing better than a Celtic led strategy. Even though it’s presently not he’s trying his darndest to show that it is.

No, remember what we are asking for…

    A Review…

Why are they so scared of a Review..?

Well, we all know, don’t we!?

Let’s look at what he is saying. “As this is a highly complex legal matter we have sought Senior counsel opinion…”

Again what are we asking for… A Review, why is he trying to muddy the waters? What is Complex about Commissioning a Review.

Okay the terms of reference might be controversial but we’re not talking get about that yet, not even close.

He is fighting tooth and nail to prevent any notion of an Independent Review.

If he wasn’t running scared his tactics would be completely different.

They would simply be… we do not need an Independent Review Because… and state his case. He can’t, he doesn’t have one.

So in the absence of this he’s hiding behind the “Lawyers” and their opaque advice, then trying to make this a “Celtic” issue.

It’s not – if all else fails then maybe Celtic have to take the lead as a last resort but let’s not play into their hands.

As I said earlier, the fact that the SPFL haven’t made an official Statement suggests there is strong support for a Review within that organisation.

    Hail Hail

  16. Seems to be a lot of unnecessary strife on here tonight and not really sure why. Celtic have a chance to defend themselves against the UEFA charges so let’s afford them that chance and as for the cheating Huns and the SFA/SPFL cheats, their day will come, of that I am 100% confident, as the truth will out!

  18. I am having a relaxing few days in Scotland and having spoken to a few Sevconians it is now quite clear to me ;

    1) Anyone who supports Sevco/Oldco or many of the “wee Hun teams” in Scotland does so in the full knowledge that the whole game is completely rigged in favour of ‘entitlement teams.’ Celtic are portrayed as the unwashed, uncouth, infidel team that have to be put to the sword by the enlightened ones. This myth is reinforced by the media and vested interests in the ‘game.’

    2) All Sevco supporters seem to believe that anything ; any cheating, any lie, any deceit is justifiable to defeat the Celt and safeguard their superiority. Almost akin to the Roman citizen watching Gladiators in combat. The authorities and Sevco supporters are almost incapable of any feelings of guilt or remorse. It’s their entitlement; everybody else is beyond the pale.

    3) They all know this and in particular the Middle Class Freemasonic type. The system was always rigged to deliver an unfair advantage to ensure their loyalty and they know it and are terrified of a level playing field in any discipline. They can’t accept the truth. They feel threatened and under scrutiny.

    4) The rent a crowd OO bandsman type seems to be delighted to follow follow anything that allows him to broadcast hate and bigotry. The cocktail of bent soccer, beating Taigs and Buckfast is irresistible.

    5) Cheating, stealing and deception are the principal foundations of their ‘culture’. The whole soccer system is based upon a lie to protect a corrupt sense of entitlement. They simply don’t believe that cheating and stealing are wrong. Dishonesty and any measure including violence to protect their manufactured identity and social status are necessary/required.

    6) The cheating at Ibrox, SFA and the SPFL is just a way of life. It’s their birthright, their culture. It’s all they know.

    7) Personally I don’t think they believe that it’s morally wrong. Keeping immigrants, taigs and the unclean in their place for them is a matter of life or death a moral imperative.

That’s why progress on one level seems slow. They don’t know the difference between right and wrong when it comes to Sevco. On another level thanks to the hardwork of a few any semblance of moral integrity in Scottish football and it’s administration is now completely in tatters.

In many ways the behaviour of many of those charged with protecting and enhancing our sport has never been so undermined.

You might be forgiven for thinking that we were in the Alabama of the 1960s! The only difference being that the corruption and bigotry is far more entrenched in the Scottish football administrator and their club of choice ‘Sevco.’

There is no right that protects someone from being offended.

Even the PC brigade recognize that your right to speak freely and openly surmounts any possible offensiveness in the speech.

As you can easily guess, I am no legal eagle.

That is why in a democratic civilized society we tolerate the right of others to speak against beliefs we ourselves may cherish.

The right of an ugly fat Orangeman to waddle about in garish regalia to display his perceived superiority and to question the ancestry of the Pope.

The right to sing offensive songs, if you can carry a tune.

We cannot be protected from being offended and how we react determines how we as human beings have developed.
