Topping agitates for a fans’ revolt

593

“The best hope for the Scottish game? It’s in the activity the fans bring to bear on big organisations.”

“Fans don’t realise yet how much change they can bring about”.

Not the words of a blogger-agitator, the words of out-going SCFL chairman, Ralph Topping, trying to incite fans to revolt against TV companies.  In the same valedictory interview to The Scotsman, Topping acknowledged the mobilisation of fans against governance standards at the SPFL, but turned his face to the fans.

The man has been in office for 8 years but has been a virtual recluse as far as the paying public are concerned.  Now we know why, he has no filter or self-awareness.

Not good enough, Mr Topping.  You have failed to answer any of the pertinent questions (here) and despite the game being brought into significant disrepute during your tenure, you have now briefed the press that you intend to ignore Celtic’s request that matters are reviewed.

If you want to incite a revolt from football fans, you are on track.  We’ll do what we can, I promise.

So what exactly are you advocating by way of a workable strategy or plan ?

Easy to moan about a board or leadership but not so easy to devise a plan to achieve results.

Only 1 club has made any statement re EBT ruling …… No fan groups making impact with their clubs.

Re uefa it seems a small group of fans are well on their way to ensuring all of us get some kind of euro ban some time soon, regardless of clubs requests to conform with uefa and today’s ridiculous uefa pronouncements are sadly given a bit more traction due to both on and off field track record of discipline. Sadly much as LG antics are amusing I guess some would see the scarf tying as provocative. Sadly too our songbook was no cleaner than theirs on Friday either. Griffiths booking was clearly ridiculous. That should be challenged.

The reality is other than the Belfast Celtic option which challenging uefa in a court of law would trigger there is little we can achieve by manning the barricades.

Fan Funding a proper judicial review is the best route.

TET- It’s obvious UEFA have been rummaging about looking for crap, to justify LG’s ridiculous yellow card…

  3. mike in toronto on

Corkcelt … on the LG issue, I tend to agree with you …. as much as I understand why he would react, and would like to stick it to them, he has to look at the bigger picture, and know that he is likely to be reported (although,to be fair to him, I believe he has done it before, and there was no disciplinary proceedings taken …)

However, on the issue of making statements, I think controlling the message is important, and something Celtic has always failed to do ….

I tend to be wary of other supporters (as I generally see them as having sevco as a second favourite team, or at least saying ‘one is as bad as the other’)….

but, with the zombie liquidation, we saw enough fans from other clubs stand up together and refuse to allow the zombies to start in the second division ..

had more information been known, I suspect (but I will admit that it cannot be proven) that there would have been an even greater outcry about the sanctions (or lack of them) imposed on the zombies….

Controlling the message is more important today than ever. As Noam Chomsky said, ” The leading student of business propaganda, Australian social scientist Alex Carey, argues persuasively that “the 20th century has been characterized by three developments of great political importance: the growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power, and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy.

This quote applies as well to the SPFL as it does to national governments. The principles are still the same. If we want a proper ‘democratic SPFL, we must control the message.

Every lie about Celtic/that affects Celtic should be challenged … if it doesn’t, the lie becomes the truth … and once that happens, it is harder to get the truth out, and much harder to get ‘neutrals’ to join in and do the right thing…

We have media and other people on the payroll …. it s time that they, and PL, earned their wages.

At the end of the day he was a daft boy and he won’t be doing it again anytime soon, pity as I for one sure enjoyed it.

Tis a sad, sad state of affairs when tying a scarf to a goal post is justification for violence, but as it’s the huns.

If anybody is trying to tell me that a scarf is more provocative than a bottle, they can bark at the moon anytime they want.

Ive never heard so much sh*** in my life.

    Seriously, that is warped.

And to condone bottles and coins thrown at Celtic players is an outrage. Its transference and a pathetic attempt at that.

    A scarf cant provoke anybody.

  8. Bada

    Without a doubt.

But we have to play by their rules as we are not big enough to flaunt them and what he did provoked the huns at uefa.

As I said earlier, till we play them at their own game we will get shafted time and time again.

  11. Steven Caulker looks increasingly likely to join Celtic.

QPR are looking to offload the defender on a free transfer, possibly with a sell-on clause in the deal.

The 25-year-old, who played under Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers at Swansea City, is now in the final year of a four-year contract at Loftus Road.

Rodgers recently played down the prospect of him moving to Parkhead, suggesting he had merely spoken to Caulker about the player’s personal problems.

However, discussions between QPR and Celtic have taken place and there now is a growing expectation that the move will happen.

  12. Barney, They most certainly could issue a statement deploring the behaviour of the Linfield fans but again why do it.

They would only be stating the obvious. No one has attempted to justify their behaviour, UEFA are charging them, retribution is on it’s way, no need for Celtic to get involved.

There is another game this week. I expect it to pass without incident but you can never be sure.

The vast vast majority of Celtic Supporters are extremely well behaved but you never know what any particular guy might do.

Let’s just stuff these plonkers on the pitch & move on to Rosenberg or Dundalk, UEFA will do what UEFA will do, no point in worrying about it.

  13. TGM A scarf is just a piece of material. Till it’s bought. An waved in yer face. Come on.

No judgement made on the charge yet.

It will all depend on the rule. What is the rule?

Always best to know the rules.

  17. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

    Barney67

Provoked to violence by a scarf, really!

Its not the scarf that was the problem, its the mind of bigots that is the problem.

Anybody who is enraged to that extent because of a scarf, should seek help.

What will they be provoked by next? Green wine gums, Green boots, a herd of stray cows, a pile of sawdust, or how about a bowl of custard.

  18. CORKCELT

What I expected was a clear condemnation of the abuse our players endured during a game, coins and bottles being thrown during the match towards them. Not just LG, but JH too.

Ffs can u imagine if it had been us?

  19. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Delaney’s , that’s a pity you both can’t get down to the game.

Its pleasing the Lions bus is still going strong . Gal and his son are doing a good job running it.

Six of us were previous members of the bus , now only one of my pals is a member of the bus.

Marriage, mortgages and children put paid to the others going all over Scotland to see our team.

  20. The 5 yellow cards from last Friday’s match all stand. The UEFA charge is automatic. Celtic will not appeal and will pay the fine.

As for Leigh, he will get done for tying the scarf to the post. It may be a fine, a yellow card which makes it two yellows and therefore a ban or an outright ban. He can plead his case and hope for the best.

There will be no statements from Celtic regards anything else.

  21. embramike supporting Res 12 on

Much speculation that Steven Caulker could sign for Celtic on a free with a sell on clause.

Think if anyone can sort the guy out, BR’s the man, but for me it would be on a “pay for play” deal on top a year’s basic salary (he is QPR’s top earner seemingly).

if BR can bring the excellent player in there to the surface, then we could have a very good player for peanuts – but let’s not underestimate the demons he is fighting, Maybe the rigours of Lennoxtown, a bracing Scottish winter and the lure of European football might just focus his mind !

  22. INVINCIBLE 'GG on

    SFA. SPFL. UEFA.

It seems we want to stick it to everyone these days.

How many different fronts can we fight on?

We need to choose our campaigns.

Starting with one we can win.

It seems that the RES12 guys have already opened up a front which will lead to cumulative success.

Despite what many see here as inaction or feet dragging, we are seeing growing awareness of the “asterisk” years.

Growing acceptance from Scottish football fans that the SFA and SPFL are running a rigged game.

One that has, is and will always favour the zombies.

The skeletons are being rattled by the likes of Auldheid and his rebel rabble rousers.

Regan, Doncaster and their motley crew of fraudsters and fools are concerned that we get the chance to take a look behind the green door.

Their incompetency and double dealing are slowly and gradually being revealed.

Daylight and exposure to the sun is the best disinfectant and if we can get our board to investigate and inform us all what went on in smoky rooms to benefit Rangers, Sevco and their own pension funds, the sooner we can clean up the game, get rid of the sinecures at Hampden and reset the game in favour of all fans.

As much as I love LG in our team..I hold no hope he will ever ‘ see the bigger picture’…

Nature didn’t make him that way. He’s a hedonist of the highest order living life in the moment. I’d be wary of trying to remove that edge as I think instinct is his guide on and off the pitch.

  24. Nobody here has tried to justify any violence or equate tying a scarf to throwing a bottle.

In any case the missiles were thrown long before Leigh tied the scarf.

Apparently the provocation was the 5-1 finger message.

The discussion is on how best to deal with fall out.

Linfield have been charged re crowd trouble & Leigh has also been charged over scarf incident.

We will just have to await the results & move on with our lives in the meantime.
