In his Q&A session with the Daily Record yesterday, outgoing SPFL chairman, Ralph Topping touched on the subject of who knew what when, regarding Rangers slide into liquidation saying:
“There wasn’t one single person ever who envisaged this case happening. You tell me who pointed out that this was going to happen – did you?
“The biggest assumption about the set-up in the SPL would be that you would have Rangers and Celtic playing in it in perpetuity – nobody thought that those two bastions of football would ever be involved in anything like this and nobody flagged it up.”
Well, in October 2011 I knew. This CQN article from 27 October 2011 notes in very specific detail Rangers were going to liquidate, a phoenix would be created which wanted direct access to the SPL (the top flight at that time). I got the timing wrong, predicting the phoenix would take place during the season, but to be fair, it later became clear this was Craig Whyte’s plan at the time.
Ralph Topping’s SPL knew too. Rangers alerted them to the situation that very month. The SPL spend November, December and January preparing the ground for Rangers administration and liquidation, a period during which a new TV deal was signed.

I haven’t done nearly enough I accept. But I know the only effentice action is to starve this board out. But I am also not naive enough to realise that will happen. It was hard enough for me.
Celtic have strung us all along (as well as stringing us up when they could). The boards behaviour for years has been appalling. Their disdain for us is palpable. It’s shames us all we haven’t dealt with it. Instead we have tried to appease them and work with them. Meanwhile they are knifing us in the back.

Moonbeams I have been a Celtic supporter all my life. It’s been the one constant in my life. God for my recent 50 th I got a hail of Celtic stuff. I even have one of those daft bricks. That’s why I get so upset and angry. They have betrayed everything that Celtic was. I honestly don’t think there is any way back. Knowing what we know I couldn’t live with myself.
To be honest I am close to giving them their ball and when I do I won’t spend so much time writing on sites like this (hurrah I hear) because really what’s the point.

Unfortunately I find myself agreeing with lots of the negative stuff posted about the Board re their silence. However this is primarily because I’m allowing emotion to overcome my rational sense. Emotion makes me want Celtic to lead on fairness and ethics and I want them to do it now. When I take a step back though I find myself unable to believe that PL will want his legacy to be that of failure and capitulation.
This issue is much bigger than short term success on the park and I can’t believe he is not aware of that. If I’m wrong and the Board are playing the support for mugs then it will not end well.
As an analogy I see this very much like a relationship in which trust is lost but both parties try for a while to “sort things out”. On the surface things seem ok but the bitterness remains and eventually the relationship breaks for good.
Celtic need to lead on this, they know it and that’s why when I remove the emotion I think they will. The consequences of failing to do so will lead to a breakdown of trust which will be irrecoverable.
