Torch passing moment between Carl and Gus

288

There are moments when the torch passes from one player to another in football.  Carl Starfelt (28) played for Celta Vigo on Saturday but did not make the bench for Sweden against Moldova last night.  Instead, Gustaf Lagerbielke made his second appearance at the back for Sweden and scored his first goal for his country.  Just as the players swapped in and out of Celtic in the summer, the international careers of Gus and Carl are heading in different directions.

A few weeks ago, Celtic called on Tomoki Iwata to fill-in in central defence, but soon we will have a glut of options there.  Cameron Carter-Vickers will be first choice when fit, while Gustaf, Liam Scales and Maik Nawrocki will compete for the other spot.  Nat Phillips, on loan until January, and Yuki Kobayashi are also in the picture.

Brendan Rodgers will genuinely not know what his central defensive pairing will be by the midway point of the season.  Early season expectations were that Maik was mostly likely to grab the opportunity.  The £4.5m signing has now been out with a hamstring injury for eight weeks, with no sign of an imminent return.  It will be a long way back to fitness for the Poland Under-21 international, but he is so highly thought of, he will get his chance.

Until then, Gus and Liam will be able to stake their claims.

  1. “Celtic was a great adventure for me in my career. We reached the UEFA Cup Final, were league champions five times and won several Scottish and League Cups, There were a lot of great matches in the Champions League and I’m very happy with the experience I had at such a fantastic club and stadium.”

Great photos. I think that last one was when we played Boavista in the UEFA cup semi final. Loved big Bobo.

  4. SPIKEY, Celtic players were staying in a city centre hotel the night before a European game early 2000s. It so happens that a works conference was being held in one of the ballrooms that night and my bro-in-law and my sister were heading downstairs in the lift when it stopped. Doors open and, in my sisters words, three giants walked in and took up all the space in the lift, politely of course.

It turns out that Bobo, Stan Varga and the wee yin Johan Mjalby were the three guys. She was MOST impressed with the size of Bobo. “How can people that size run around a football park?” she asked innocently.

    …………….

I “Think” I was only in the Temporary Stand for ONE Season, and then Celtic OFFERED me the chance to move into the Lower North Stand. I was in the seating area of where the Green Brigade are now……A GREAT SEAT halfway up and only TWO Seats available next to a EXIST Wall…and the Stairway.

It was great for nipping up and down to the Toilets etc…..especially after a good Bevvy BEFORE the games.

I LOVED the Temporary Stand and the NOISE the 3,000 volunteers made.

But my seat in the North Stand was better in other ways ( The Weather )

  7. When I was at Secondary School ( 1968 – 1971 ) in the East End of Glasgow, we were taught some BASICS of Rugby Union by one of the PE Teachers.

We did NOT have a Rugby Pitch, so we ALWAYS used the biggest Football Pitch we had, which was RED ASH.

Apart from the Rugby Union lessons during PE Periods, this PE Teacher hand picked me and others from my class to play in THREE organised Rugby Union games against other Schools on our RED ASH Pitch

The first TWO games were WON by my team…..NO TRYS for any team, just Penalties. I think it was THREE Points for a Penalty back then, and the Rugby Ball HAD to go over the Fitba Goal Posts for a Penalty to be be successful.

In the THIRD Rugby match between my team and another School, we were TIED at THREE Points each ( Penalties scored ), until the last minute of the game, when I scored an excellent TRY to WIN the game. It was the ONLY TRY that was Scored in the Three games.

I was the Class Hero that day.

The PE Teacher was a Sadistic Bassa, and there were several injuries from playing on that RED ASH Fitba Pitch in Winter.

    Happy Days…

  8. The world lost a great Tim yesterday .

    Hugh ( Shuggie) MacFarlane .

Hugh’s brother Ben will be known to some on here .

The MacFarlane brothers Hugh , Michael , John and Ben were and are , very proud of their ancestral Irish heritage.

They were brought up during an era of distinct anti Catholic persecution.

In the town of Buckhaven in Fife ,

Which was a wee Orange enclave during the 1970’s .

They were the product of two wonderful parents .Along with the McAllister’s they were the most abused Roman Catholics in the town .

Just for playing fitba in the street they would be bullied because they were RC’s .

They bore the abuse with bravery and class .

Shuggie was a wonderful soul .

    Gentle in his manner .

All four brothers more intelligent than the average bear .

Hugh always made you feel like his day was better for meeting you , when the reality was .

Your day was better for meeting Shug .

Always a blether about “ The Tic” .

Sometimes it would extend onto our hopes for a United Ireland .

A Staunch optimistic Celtic Mhan .

A Mhan of great faith .

His family and loved ones will be really hurting today .

He will be sadly missed for years to come .

    R.I.P. Hugh MacFarlane .

The credits at the end of the Youtube show include a Rocky Graziano…

    ______

Reminded me of the Paul Newman film about Rocky Graziano. A very young Steve McQueen makes a brief appearance as a gang member, if I remember correctly. Will need to watch again. Good movie.

  12. Tiny Tim… Your friend Hugh …sounds like he was a gem…and indeed like so many who pass through our Celtic lives …..our lives are all the richer for it …but makes their passing all the more poignant. RIP

  13. Sorry to hear of your loss TT. Your friend Hugh sounds like a really good person and Celtic man.

A CELTIC icon’s collection of European Cup football shirts has sold at an auction in Glasgow for £100,000.

The Bertie Auld Collection, which was owned by the family of Bertie Auld, included jerseys the midfielder swapped with some of football’s top players during the Glasgow club’s run to the Cup Finals in 1967 and 1970.

In total, 17 shirts were in the collection, including a jersey believed to have been worn by Josef Vacenovsky of Dukla Prague during the 1967 European Cup semi-final – which sold for £14,800.

Another highlight of the collection was an Inter Milan top from the late captain – Armando Picchi, which sold for £13,000.

The Celtic legend’s son, Robert Auld, said: “Dad was quite humble about his achievements and didn’t talk too much about the games, but then again, he didn’t need to.

“The shirts speak for themselves and show how Celtic went from underdogs on the international stage to one of the most dominant forces in Europe during the late 1960s and early 70s.

“Dad was a phenomenon and a tremendously hard worker on and off the field.

“He always said he never had any regrets in life, although he did admit that he could have scored four against Inter in the 1967 final.”

Another t-shirt in the collection was Leeds legend’s, Billy Bremner’s, which fetched £12,000.

Since Bertie passed away in 2021, Robert has followed in his charitable footsteps, launching the Bertie Auld Legacy in 2022.

Robert added: “Dad would do anything for anyone and worked tirelessly for a number of charities throughout his life.

“My only regret is that we didn’t launch the Bertie Auld Legacy earlier when he could have played an active part.

“That said, I know he would be pleased with the work the charity is doing.

“Dad suffered from dementia and in the last few years of his life I spent a lot of time with him, which I loved.

“We would spend time in the garden, building fences and whatnot, with Dad singing along to his favourite Frank Sinatra songs.

“As we look to expand the charity’s activities, we are looking to support a number of other good causes, including research into dementia.

“To help with this, we will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the auction to the Bertie Auld Legacy.”

McTear’s specialist, James Bruce, said: “There is no doubt Bertie Auld thoroughly deserves his place in the Scottish Football Hall of Fame, with the Celtic midfielder playing a pivotal role in multiple European games in the 1960s and 1970’s, including the Lisbon Lions triumph in 1967.

“The collection paints a detailed picture of Auld’s incredible career, including the runs to both the 1967 and 1970 European Cup Finals.

“It is a rare thing to see just one shirt from this illustrious period in Celtic’s history come to auction, but to see over a dozen from some of the game’s most famous players is simply breathtaking.

“We are delighted with the auction results, which highlight the huge importance of the collection.”

The collection was up for auction on October 12 at McTear’s Auctioneers in Glasgow.
