Torch passing moment between Carl and Gus

288

There are moments when the torch passes from one player to another in football.  Carl Starfelt (28) played for Celta Vigo on Saturday but did not make the bench for Sweden against Moldova last night.  Instead, Gustaf Lagerbielke made his second appearance at the back for Sweden and scored his first goal for his country.  Just as the players swapped in and out of Celtic in the summer, the international careers of Gus and Carl are heading in different directions.

A few weeks ago, Celtic called on Tomoki Iwata to fill-in in central defence, but soon we will have a glut of options there.  Cameron Carter-Vickers will be first choice when fit, while Gustaf, Liam Scales and Maik Nawrocki will compete for the other spot.  Nat Phillips, on loan until January, and Yuki Kobayashi are also in the picture.

Brendan Rodgers will genuinely not know what his central defensive pairing will be by the midway point of the season.  Early season expectations were that Maik was mostly likely to grab the opportunity.  The £4.5m signing has now been out with a hamstring injury for eight weeks, with no sign of an imminent return.  It will be a long way back to fitness for the Poland Under-21 international, but he is so highly thought of, he will get his chance.

Until then, Gus and Liam will be able to stake their claims.

  1. Clements win rate as a manager is mid 50s as a percentage.

Curious how this equates to the phrase serial winner.

Curious how Belgiums top league now has acquired a status well above the SPFL.

Curious how a guy who has never managed a team with average home attendance of more than 25,000 can deal with the goldfish bowl of Scotland as the manager of the less well resourced team.

  2. The comments on French speaking twitter would strongly indicate that we’ve got little to fear.

it is some listen – he is a brilliant manager, winning 3 titles in a row in belgium with 2 different clubs, while promoting academy players, very methodical, all about the system, give him time, man management is good, he is brilliant

*I recall siting in work listenin tae snyde with my ear plugs in when they had just unveiled paul joseph marie le guen remember him that said right aff the back he only went tae Holy Mass during the important events like Christmas and Easter, anyway the big fat faced pie eater blurted out, as only he could, that plg loved tae take a team that was down in their luck and build them back up again.

I responded quite loudly, as you do when your ears are covered “wtf, a parcel of scheidt” much tae the consternation of my fellow coworkers, well those that understood broad Scots, as he actually inherited a title winning Lyon fae Jacques Santini who had won the League Cup as well there and only resigned tae take over the national coach position replacing Roger Lemerre.

What made matters worse was his fellow co-hots agreed with him, the country’s full of hun revisionist, although in sayin that I fully expect them tae get off tae a flyer and also win the LC not that they are that good but the sons of bealzebub will make sure of that

  4. Mon Engurlund…

A small wager (not that small) on both teams 20+ points with Engurlund winning …

    Rugby is still shoite :-)

  6. A new level of incredible bias by the officials in tge Fiji England game.

In a sport where England has more players than every other country in the world England are serial underachievers. Their fans are racist Scum with their swing low shite.

Refs giving them everything yet they still struggled. Yet they Ops head coach says the are in the semis on merit.

Joke. They are there because of the most bias draw. They beat the number 10 team in the world. FFS.

I used to think the rugby commentators were fine. Relatively unbiased and most interested in the actual rugby. Today dispelled that view and to call England`s having reached the semis ` a fantastic achievement` summed up their attitude.

Only concellation is that I believe either France or South Africa will slaughter them.

  8. Hot smoked.

I honestly think they will go all the way.

They have played no one yet while France Boks NZ and Ireland and Scotland battered each other.

All the pressure will be on France tonight and next week. If only because we won’t have to listen to the horrible English support next week then I want France tonight. Although I think the Boks would have the discipline and belief.

It does depend on the referee though. This guy was shocking today.

I`d be amazed. I believe both France and South Africa are miles ahead of this pretty average England sid

  10. The Hosts versus the Holders

Two great teams, playing along with Ireland and the All Blacks, matches which should be semi-finals.

Always a possibility that England could reach the semi-finals given the Group draws.

    And now they have.

  11. CELTIC MAC on 15TH OCTOBER 2023 6:39 PM

Yip. All Blacks,France,Ireland ,South Africa…………and England.

    Something amiss :-)))

  12. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Burnley, they do deserve to be in the semi final because of an extremely fortunate draw. They scraped a win against Samoa, we’re run close against Fiji and haven’t played a top class team.

They’ll get destroyed in the semi final regardless if it’s France or South Africa.

Keep in mind ITV have exclusive rights. ITV is tabloid TV and pander to the lowest common denominator.

  18. Goal for Spain. Goal stands after a lengthy VAR check. Gavi scores. Norway 0 Spain 1. Scotland nearly there

  19. Congratulations Scotland on qualifying for the European Championship finals for the second time in a row.

  20. VAR was quite funny for Spain tonight – they disallowed a perfectly legit goal because Scotland, y’know, and then allowed a goal that was clearly offside but took 5 mins to decide something or wait for us all to go for beer or somethibng – who knows?

Anyway, Scotland qualifies! … again! … So who cares! lol!
