Torch passing moment between Carl and Gus

288

There are moments when the torch passes from one player to another in football.  Carl Starfelt (28) played for Celta Vigo on Saturday but did not make the bench for Sweden against Moldova last night.  Instead, Gustaf Lagerbielke made his second appearance at the back for Sweden and scored his first goal for his country.  Just as the players swapped in and out of Celtic in the summer, the international careers of Gus and Carl are heading in different directions.

A few weeks ago, Celtic called on Tomoki Iwata to fill-in in central defence, but soon we will have a glut of options there.  Cameron Carter-Vickers will be first choice when fit, while Gustaf, Liam Scales and Maik Nawrocki will compete for the other spot.  Nat Phillips, on loan until January, and Yuki Kobayashi are also in the picture.

Brendan Rodgers will genuinely not know what his central defensive pairing will be by the midway point of the season.  Early season expectations were that Maik was mostly likely to grab the opportunity.  The £4.5m signing has now been out with a hamstring injury for eight weeks, with no sign of an imminent return.  It will be a long way back to fitness for the Poland Under-21 international, but he is so highly thought of, he will get his chance.

Until then, Gus and Liam will be able to stake their claims.

Great picture of Chris Morris and Anton Rogan. In a Celtic bromance moment I bought Chris a bottle of Red Stripe in the Cotton Club, Paisley.

Just to say thanks for that cup final

Interesting to read that the SFA are demanding answers from UEFA and criticising the referee from the other night.

Not so keen on being questioned when their refs are caught cheating.

Kinda agree with Prestonpans Bhoys observation about Chris Sutton.

Loved the big guy as a player and he has done remarkably well to elbow his way into UK mainstream punditry.

He’s one of us (tick) and he is way more intelligent, literate and coherent than that imbecilic blue specs equivalent, Boyd (tick)

But the job description is basically shock jocking and winding up.

    PS – re PB’s post ….

Living proof for me that the Scots’ blend of intelligence, humility and “rough” means we are one of the very few English speaking races who can comfortably use “penchant” and “shite” in the same sentence.

  5. Hello again all you young rebels.

Not had much enthusiasm to post the last few days, too

much sadness in my heart with all that’s going on in the

    world.

Man’s inhumanity to man, I just don’t understand it.

Anyhows, reading back, once I scrolled by the opportunists,

nice to see an old pal of mine being recognised as a great

    footballer.

RIP Frank McDougall, knew him from his St Mirrin days and

always thought he’d end up at his boyhood dream team the

    Celtic.

Used to see him at Ashfield greyhound racing on a Friday night

and my first question was always, “ When are you going to the

    tic Frank “

Always the same answer “ Soon as “

Later on when he had signed for Aberdeen, I’d meet him on

the late train up to sheep land, usually a Wednesday, along

with some other ex Celts, or their fathers, brothers, etc, who

made a living in the North Sea.

A terrific striker, who would have graced the hoops, but as

Tontine TIM has already indicated it was “ Anybody but Celtic “

with the hand shake mobs who ran the other clubs.

So! off down to Mornington again tomoz, it’s Celtic Sunday, when

I get back ??? the only certainty is, I’ll be so hungover, agaaain.

  6. Not often I am excited ( in a sporting sense) when Celtic are not playing but the Ireland V All Blacks game has me greatly enthused.

When the Tournament started, I thought the All Blacks were the worst All Blacks` side I had ever seen. Considering how good they HAVE been though, that is maybe not as condemnatory as it might see.

Neverthelees, at that time, I would have made Ireland certs to beat hem. Now, I am not so sure.

Regardless, I am really looking forward to the game .

    With you Hot Smoked.

Ireland New Zealand should be a cracker.

Definitive set of quarter finals all of which are Northern versus Southern Hemisphere.

Southern Hemisphere has totally dominated this competition since it began in 1987.

Might be too much (and too greedy) to ask for four Northern Hemisphere teams into the semis.

Trying to be fair and global in my outlook 3-1 would be acceptable.

    Good luck Fiji.

    “Scottish FA write to UEFA…….”.

What irony. Wonder where they got the idea.

*now this might sound daft, and it probably is but whenever an unfavourable call is made against us, home or abroad, we tend tae point the fingers at the bonkle bigot and IMHO quite rightly tae, now when I first read of the highly controversial disallowed goal in Spain my thought was well there goes that theory as its now happening tae the national side but later on this thought crossed my mind.

It was the sfa, at the urging of the Catholic church, tae discipline the sectarian racist that cost him, at that time, his lucrative job and a strike ensued which he in fact offered tae call off if he was reinstated much tae the consternation of the mild mannered Chief Executive who told him, in a language that the Clancy Brothers once said the clergy do not know, to go forth and multiply so why would he NOT if he holds such a grudge no try and hurt his former employer by doing the same with the refs as he does tae us, why not.

Now I know that’s a bit far fetched but I too hold grudges and long lasting ones at that and although I don’t wish ill will on anyone or group when I do hear that they have fallen intae misfortune or even passed on all I think is “KARMA”

An excellent Day at NEWMARKET Races Today.

My Favourite FLAT Trainer and Favourite FLAT Jockey had THREE Winners Today, I had those Three Winners along with their TWO Winners from yesterday….So I managed to have the same ” 5 TIMER” with Two different bookies between yesterday and today.

I also had the Three winners from Today along with a 3/1 Winner at YORK, so that was a ” 4 Timer” come up.

I also had a TREBLE With the Three winners Today at Newmarket.

I also had a FORECAST DOUBLE come up with the first Two races at Newmarket Today.

I also had the FORECAST in the 2.40 Race in Newmarkets 2.40 Race. The Forecast paid almost £94.00 for a £1.00 stake. I think there were around 30 Runners in that Big Handicap Race, so to get the Forecast come up was very good.

Not a bad day all round.

quietest ever saturday on here ? ever.

    ————

Many reasons for that.. We are all holding our breath and praying.

My personal highlight today was seeing King Kenny and the KOK’s on stage together at the London Celtic Foundation dinner.

Their value today could wipe out the national debt.

    Great footballers and great men.

    HH.

  17. Disappointing result from Marseilles, three more pretty evenly balanced QFs to go…I reckon All Blacks, England & Springboks to get through, though would prefer Fiji!

Boks to beat NZ in the final…

  18. Pumas go through.

No easy task for Ireland, knockout rugby brings a whole different scenario.

Though I saw a slip in concentration towards the end of the Scotland game, cannot afford that against the All Blacks. That said this is the best Irish team ever to compete in the World Cup.

Too close to call for me.
