Trophyless Saturday or trophyless existence

316

I know what you’re thinking. It’s Saturday, where’s Celtic’s trophy presentation?  Last Saturday it was the Scottish Cup, a week earlier, the Premiership trophy.  You can be forgiven for expecting the same today.

For me, the pick of last season’s trophies was the League Cup Final. Newco came into it in great form since the arrival of Mick Beale as manager.  It was a test of his credentials and of Celtic’s.  The dominance of the win belies the 2-1 scoreline, Celtic were miles ahead.

Speaking of dominance, it was rewarding to read that Barry Ferguson endorsed Celtic’s Generation of Domination in his Daily Record column. He wrote about our “decades of dominance”.

Although he goes on to say, “let’s be very, very clear. This dominance has to stop.”  Back in the day (January 2005), I asserted our G.o.D. started in 2000, so we are now onto the third decade, if that’s how Barry likes to count them, out the second generation, if you prefer.

What was missing from Barry’s piece is any hope that things were going to change. Barry is not as daft as some make out.

Better a trophyless Saturday than a trophyless existence.

  2. The money men and the broadcasters cent ignore the fanbase and pulling power of BOTH Celtic and Sevco forever. Too much money to be made by their inclusion. When the day comes…and it will…. I’ll give up supporting if all were cheering on is fake

Brendan Rodgers hasn’t ruled out returning to Celtic as their new boss.

The Northern Irishman is still a leading contender to replace Ange Postecoglou who left for Spurs last week. And while the club are weighing up several managerial targets, Parkhead majority shareholder Dermot Desmond is a huge admirer of Rodgers after his trophy-laden first spell as Hoops gaffer. The 50-year-old left Leicester in April and had planned to take a lengthy break before returning to a Premier League club or job abroad.

Despite distancing himself from reports of potentially replacing Postecoglou, Record Sport understands he won’t rule anything out. It comes after German boss Daniel Farke emerged as a shock contender. The 46-year-old has recently left Borussia Monchengladbach and previously spent four years in England with Norwich City, winning the Canaries promotion to the Premier League. He’s currently a free agent and Sky Germany claim he has already held initial talks about a move to Parkhead.

But two of the leading contenders for the job appear to have dropped out of the race. David Moyes was an early favourite for the post but after securing the Europa Conference League trophy in Prague, he’ll be staying at West Ham next season. And former Chelsea coach Graham Potter – who was approached by Celtic – feels his next club will be in the Premier League.

Manchester City assistant boss Enzo Maresca remains a live target. Talks with him were delayed until after the Champions League Final against Inter Milan. Bodo Glimt gaffer Kjetil Knutsen and Club Brugge assistant Rik de Mil are also on the club’s radar.

  4. If…….Celtic were bought over by a multi billionaire……and we could lure the best 11 players in the world….and we then won the league….would you celebrate up Glasgow Cross like we do now…..or would we see it as it REALLY is?

If celtic won the European Cup because some rich gut got celtic the best 20 players on the planet and the best manager ever, I would celebrate and then some, but would I be calling it a fairytale? Not a chance

Sometimes I think Paul is trying to lead us on with his implied knowledge of the internal workings and decisions of the board..

    More than sometimes Ron imo

And the implied knowledge is a handy chatel to the board,as it is when they are dishing out as crumbs to all the Cellic meeja stars.

Hope your good Ron and still fighting the good fight with your health.keep on keeping on

I am still good and fighting the fight, thanks. The doctors have kept the cancer in check for four years now and are quick to tweak my treatment at the first sign of any advances. For my part all I do is keep a positive outlook, try to live as normal a life as possible and turn up to my various appointments.

  22. paulsthroughball88 on

If you’re actual Champions of your own league, if you’ve gone through the whole tournament unbeaten, if you’ve defeated the eventual Europa League winners 4-0 on their own patch on the way, and if you’ve played over 6 hours of football against Bayern and Real, and come out on top by a margin of 9-2, it certainly can’t be said that you didn’t deserve to win the Champions League, even if in the final itself previous performance levels proved elusive.

Of course, if it’s all about the money, why haven’t Manure won the Premiership in 10 years, never mind the Champions League? And how are Chelsea doing?

Great to see Pep, just like the great Messi earlier in the season, silence the doubters, sniping away even in the face of the incredible achievements of the pair, separately and together.

You’re obviously more easily rewarded than me, Paul!

Thanks for the story, though – incredible to think I could be so careless but it somehow completely slipped my mind to buy the Daily Record yesterday!

Are we still a stand-alone club btw? Starting to lose track a bit these days…..

  24. Paulsthroughball88

I really like what Pep tried to do and I am pleased for him re the win. Less so for Messi and an ugly Argentina win in the wc.

I do think with the resources pep has had he could / should have won the CL more often. Partly fighting on 2 fronts may have been his problem. EPL and CL. I do still wish we had a more level playing field financially in football. I also wish it was so much less manufactured.

The spontaneity of our centenary season wins trumps all the modern pre organized, podium setting up, badge and heart slapping crap. Give me the Cup semi and final wins from that year over any of our trebles for sheer delight.

  25. I think we’ll end up with someone left-field, who no-one has yet to mention………..

I can’t believe that Chompers would get another bite at the rotten apple of scoddish fiba’….but ye never know.
