Trophyless Saturday or trophyless existence

316

I know what you’re thinking. It’s Saturday, where’s Celtic’s trophy presentation?  Last Saturday it was the Scottish Cup, a week earlier, the Premiership trophy.  You can be forgiven for expecting the same today.

For me, the pick of last season’s trophies was the League Cup Final. Newco came into it in great form since the arrival of Mick Beale as manager.  It was a test of his credentials and of Celtic’s.  The dominance of the win belies the 2-1 scoreline, Celtic were miles ahead.

Speaking of dominance, it was rewarding to read that Barry Ferguson endorsed Celtic’s Generation of Domination in his Daily Record column. He wrote about our “decades of dominance”.

Although he goes on to say, “let’s be very, very clear. This dominance has to stop.”  Back in the day (January 2005), I asserted our G.o.D. started in 2000, so we are now onto the third decade, if that’s how Barry likes to count them, out the second generation, if you prefer.

What was missing from Barry’s piece is any hope that things were going to change. Barry is not as daft as some make out.

Better a trophyless Saturday than a trophyless existence.

Looks like a two way fight ….Brendans to turn down ?….DD can be very hard to beat….I’m hoping he wins this one …better the devious devil you know!!

  8. So now the dust is settled we can have a wee bit of fun seeing who we will get in the groups stage of CL

    Feyenoord

    Porto

    Shakhtar

Would be great for a bit of revenge.

    Man City

    Real Madrid

    AC Milan

    Would be a bit tricky.

    Seville

    Leipzig

    Zagreb

Would give us a fighting chance.

  9. Aside from how divisive it might be am I the only one that finds BR’s tippy tappy possession football a bit dated? As fantastic as he was for us, it was a hard watch towards the end and teams were finding it easier to get men behind the ball in numbers.

I’d like to see someone who’ll keep the tempo up. And that’s before I mention his European record throughout his career.

  10. GB1978,

I don’t want Rogers back, for a start. Mainly because of how he left but also because of the football we played when he was manager. Ange will be hard to replicate but I would hope we are trying to bring in someone who plays entertaining football.

    No you are not.

That said there are other positives about Brendan.

He knows the terrain here well.

He has a lot of experience.

He has a real point to prove.

He is very professional with a phenomenal workrate.

His number 2 is top notch

  12. Burnley78

Perfectly valid points you make. However, in terms of professionalism, work-rate, point to prove etc that should be the minimum requirement for any manager. We shouldn’t even be considering anyone who lacks those attributes.

  13. Brendan gave us 2 trebles, and the invincibles, yet some did not like his style of play !!!!!!!.Any new managerial prospect would be wondering,WTF do these fans want.

The baggage he brings does not make him perfect, but, the other contenders, all have risks about them, and would take a lot of valuable time to find their feet.We HAVE to win the League this season above all else.New format for CL makes it a must.

I’m not saying I didn’t like his style and indeed there were some of my most thrilling moments as a Celtic fan. I am saying though that a style of football that was great five or six years ago might not be as effective today. Football moves on rapidly. I think it’s a valid point.

  15. Get those Brendan Rodgers books in the club shop while they’re cheap, I think the price may be put up this week…

  16. Farioli the latest name. Anybody know much about him other than he worked with De Zerbi? CV looks pretty sparse.

  17. If BR comes back, he’ll only be leaving us for a top job in EPL. Where he interested in the EPL cannon fodder clubs, he’d simply wait till the phone calls started coming in before Christmas.

Get it done, Celtic. Ewan Murray crying about Rodgers coming back this morning in his latest piece should tell us all we need to know.

  18. AN DÚN

True but so would most managers. On the bright side, if EPL clubs come calling it’ll mean he and us have been successful.

  19. Bada Bing!! on 11th June 2023 10:06 pm

If Rodgers is showing any interest, throw the kitchen sink at it,to get him back

He must be interested if we’re flying out to Spain to talk to him. That’s positive.

Now we have to get it over the line.

  20. I get the feeling Rodgers is our main focus with soundings being taken of other candidates just in case.

    BURNLEY78 @8:32

You could have added that he came within a Gerrard slip of winning the EPL.

No other candidate so far mentioned has come anywhere near that level of achievement.

So, yes, but only if he comes with John McGinn of course!

  22. My friends in Celtic,

BURNLEY78 makes some compelling points about the return of BR.

    Let’s reflect on them :-

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the best fit of them all.

Its a no brainer , After some self reflection, I’m sure Brendan can see himself leading us to more glory.

    HH,

  23. For Goodness sake Celtic, forget about Rodgers,Farge,Moyes, hurry up and employ a young good coach ,there are plenty of them ,picking the right one will be a problem, and hopefully they bring there own staff with them,as for Rodgers,a lot off Celtic Supporters have short memories,he walked out on us in a very important season, when going for the ten with him as coach was a possibility,
