Trophyless Saturday or trophyless existence

316

I know what you’re thinking. It’s Saturday, where’s Celtic’s trophy presentation?  Last Saturday it was the Scottish Cup, a week earlier, the Premiership trophy.  You can be forgiven for expecting the same today.

For me, the pick of last season’s trophies was the League Cup Final. Newco came into it in great form since the arrival of Mick Beale as manager.  It was a test of his credentials and of Celtic’s.  The dominance of the win belies the 2-1 scoreline, Celtic were miles ahead.

Speaking of dominance, it was rewarding to read that Barry Ferguson endorsed Celtic’s Generation of Domination in his Daily Record column. He wrote about our “decades of dominance”.

Although he goes on to say, “let’s be very, very clear. This dominance has to stop.”  Back in the day (January 2005), I asserted our G.o.D. started in 2000, so we are now onto the third decade, if that’s how Barry likes to count them, out the second generation, if you prefer.

What was missing from Barry’s piece is any hope that things were going to change. Barry is not as daft as some make out.

Better a trophyless Saturday than a trophyless existence.

  1. Manchester City are a very wealthy club, However so is Inter Milan .

    That is stating the obvious.

Now switch to the SC final. How much do we dwarf ICT. In club wealth, resources, in stadium infrastructure , in player transfers, in Wages paid, in fan base in managerial choices etc etc.

Football is not a level playing field. It is arguably more stark in Scotland than in England and Europe.

    C’est la vie

  2. It still takes skill to build a team …but man city could easily have lost that last night incredible luck they had …..Bernado Silva stand out player for me ..sheer class

  3. My main conclusion after watching the game last night.

A top class goalkeeper is absolutely vital. Although often undervalued the goalkeeper is the most pivotal in any team.

    Remember that fellow Celtic fans.

Hail Hail. The journey is at a station.

You’d guess that if Maresco is the tactical brains behind Citeh, we won’t be the only one flickering our eyelids in his direction. I agree that we may opt for a left field pick – I will re-propose Graham Arnold and Renee Mulensteen as a ready baked and experienced duo.

And when folks decry the role of Saudi riyal, remember we take plenty moolah from a sports betting, casino gambling and poker game company, part of a predatory gambling industry whose tax-evading products deliver edgy joy and financial devastation in equal measure (at best).

Any moral high ground in that regard, is built on pretty sandy foundations.

Mon Celtic; bring in Arnie and Renee – they usually play a Benitez inspired 4-2-3-1. HH

Celtic supporters bitching about clubs having too much money and being far too good for the competition.

Now that I’ve stopped laughing, all I can say is — oh the irony.

  6. Football has always been inequal, but by God the difference has never been so stark. It is only a matter of time before there is a breakaway from the biggest clubs in the biggest leagues or from the big clubs from the wee leagues, cause it appear no teams or clubs are remotely happy with the status co. European leagues that make all participants richer but keep clubs in their place.

I would be happy to see all the wee nations form their own regional leagues and tell uefa and the big 5 leagues to fuck off

    Agree,

I have an issue with the finacial fair play rules as it seems to me that they are designed to stop more clubs from doing a man city etc have done after the horse has bolted. So the clubs with all the money are now saying, it was OK for us but not you

Good afternoon all from the Victoria Bar. The fun never stops. Unless yer a trophyless hun.

  9. My opinion of our new manager is, we can’t afford to take any risk. Maresca may be the new Pep, we do not know. Just has to be , for me anyway, Knutsen

Every appointment is a risk, especially with such a vehemently Anti Celtic Press here in Scotland. Big Mogga couldnae handle it, though he was dealing with the Worst Cheating ever, in my lifetime.

We’ve, in the main, got the right Man @ the Right Time.

We need to be making inroads in Europe, I know it isnae easy these Davie Hays. So yeah Knutsen is a good shout but I don’tthink he will be the 1.

  11. My problem isn’t so much about how much City spend but it’s where the money has come from and why. Same with Newcastle and PSG. It’s sportswashing plain and simple.

For me, there is quite a difference between a club having more money than others via the turnstiles as opposed to via an excessively rich individual.

Athletes on performance enhancing drugs still have to train hard but their advantage over others is still unfair.

For me, unearned billions give clubs an unfair advantage.

It may be Scooby Scooby Doo.

    I doubt it though.

Chris was a Magnificent player for the Hoops in that Awesome Season.

I have no doubt he’d huv the backbone to Manage Celtic.

I think Everyone realises that Ange absolutely owned the Press, Anti Celtic Press, and I Really think it is 1 of the biggest disappointments about him leaving efter just 2 Abdul Quadirs.

    We Move on.

I get your point and kinda agree re the irony however when the largesse is bestowed by one rich benefactor and is unquestionably breaching the rules laid down by the governing bodies it feels wrong.

When a fanbase / consumer base can be manufactured rather than cultivated organically and when there is no real depth to a clubs identity it simply feels wrong.

However my main point is the glass ceiling is thicker than ever. I warned of this and indeed offered realistic viable collaborative (with other similarly challenged organizations) commercial options to work with, to SFA, Celtic and Rangers. I wrote a detailed MBA thesis paper on back in 2004. Opportunities to address this have been missed by all 3 parties and we are left where we are. As are the other non big 4 countries. Indeed there will soon only be a big 1.

I guess the above is where my frustration lies and is probably my only bone of contention with our current custodians at Celtic.

Anyway we can chat Re this and other stuff a week on Friday pre the St Pauli game.

  17. I would like to think that, we, as a support, would react differently to winning as a result of Sugar Daddy money but…….. seeing the way that Newcastle and Man City fans have responded to their financial input, I think the dissent would be small and easily managed.

But it’s a moot opinion because no rich Sheik is gonna put money into an SPFL team with a small TV audience of interest. Our only chance of being as relevant as we were 66 to 74 is to be part of a breakaway set up and hope we remain competitive enough not to lose that part of our support that could not cope with our team being also rans or cannon fodder for a few years, until we reached the level of the financial doped breakaway teams.

  18. in the words of another blogger , we don’t require someone’s assistant coach.

For God’s sake Celtic, stop this flirting with disaster. Give us an experienced winner and give him the tools and the time and space to work, and we can enjoy the rest of the summer.

It’s, well in Europe anyway, less corrupted, I ain’t saying it isnae Corrupt.

That was too big a Job for Ange to turn down, It is the harsh realities.

Our next Boss might take us further than last 16 in said Corrupt Thang.

I hadn’t thought of it that way but guess it’s poss.

Equally so, mibby they just all filled their boots and are now being pulled into some appearance of line.

Just like City dominate via finance (and what it buys you) in the EPL, so do we in SPFL (as Philmac says, it buys a sporting advantage). It’s in Europe we tend to get found out, resulting in our collective arses getting felt.

I hope the new boss is better than the old boss in that sense.

  26. Seemingly Joe Lewis ( Spurs owner ) is a close friend of DD

Our planning for a new manager would have started some time ago.

I can only assume we are waiting on the CL fina celebrations to subside

Still can’t believe nobody on the coaching staff sensed the departure of Ange. Doesn’t say much for their powers of perception.
