Trophyless Saturday or trophyless existence

I know what you’re thinking. It’s Saturday, where’s Celtic’s trophy presentation?  Last Saturday it was the Scottish Cup, a week earlier, the Premiership trophy.  You can be forgiven for expecting the same today.

For me, the pick of last season’s trophies was the League Cup Final. Newco came into it in great form since the arrival of Mick Beale as manager.  It was a test of his credentials and of Celtic’s.  The dominance of the win belies the 2-1 scoreline, Celtic were miles ahead.

Speaking of dominance, it was rewarding to read that Barry Ferguson endorsed Celtic’s Generation of Domination in his Daily Record column. He wrote about our “decades of dominance”.

Although he goes on to say, “let’s be very, very clear. This dominance has to stop.”  Back in the day (January 2005), I asserted our G.o.D. started in 2000, so we are now onto the third decade, if that’s how Barry likes to count them, out the second generation, if you prefer.

What was missing from Barry’s piece is any hope that things were going to change. Barry is not as daft as some make out.

Better a trophyless Saturday than a trophyless existence.

  1. Geebee1978,

I am not disagreeing with you,but we have a whole new team now,If its the safest bet, then it has to be him.Anyone else is a gamble. No matter what any of us think.

  2. Every single manager being touted has had negatives pinned on them. There can be no pleasing everyone.

For me it boils down to three criteria.

    There can be no projects.

With bigger CL gold coming in 24-25 we need someone to hit the ground running.

As close to box office as we can get

    Only BR ticks these boxes.

If Enzo is just one of 8 coaches at Citeh, wouldn’t our ideal succession plan be Brendan as manager (knowing it wouldn’t be forever) PLUS Enzo as his right hand man and successor to the Paradise throne?

PS, here’s some ready made headlines for the Scottish subbies depending on how this palaver plays out:

    Joy Rodgers

    Moyes Bhoys

    Knutsen Bolts

    Marsch Lands

  4. We’ve forgotten the context of his first departure

He had the opportunity of CL football but more importantly to any Celtic supporter, the chance of leading us to the ten. Legend status assured, but it wasn’t enough, the lure of Leicester City in the EPL was bigger.

He left at the pointy bit of the season, tried to take everyone with him, putting everything at risk

    Could have been a disaster

So unless he’s undergone some sort of character change it’s pretty safe to assume that we’ll see it at some stage again in the future. It’s just magical thinking that we won’t.

The question is how long? Do we employ him and then spend the entire time he’s with us crossing our fingers? Constant speculation about jobs in the EPL? February next year when Moyes has been sacked and West Ham are looking for a manager? Next Summer if we don’t win the league? Or even if we do?

Don’t kid ourselves that it couldn’t happen at any time.

Reports in Norway say Celtic have made a £2.5m bid for 20 year-old Odin Thiago Holm, a midfielder who has 2 Norway caps and currently plays for Velerenga.

Could this mean that Knutsen is our new manager?

    Confused?

    So am I.

  6. Do we really think that any good and ambitious manager will not want to manage in the richest league on the planet ?

    I get that.

It’s when managers thump thier chest and make hypocritical proclamations that they will be with us as long as the club wants them, then f@ ck off at the first opportunity

    That gets on my goat.

Brendan did NOT leave Celtic during the 10-in-a-row season.

He left during our 8-in-a-row campaign.

I’m genuinely intrigued, who were the first three EPL teams that Ange turned down ?

  9. TOM MCLAUGHLIN on 12TH JUNE 2023 11:24 AM

Brendan was 15 months away from managing Celtic to the ten

It wasn’t a big enough pull to keep him at Celtic. Why would he not leave the first decent job offer he got?
