Trophyless Saturday or trophyless existence

316

I know what you’re thinking. It’s Saturday, where’s Celtic’s trophy presentation?  Last Saturday it was the Scottish Cup, a week earlier, the Premiership trophy.  You can be forgiven for expecting the same today.

For me, the pick of last season’s trophies was the League Cup Final. Newco came into it in great form since the arrival of Mick Beale as manager.  It was a test of his credentials and of Celtic’s.  The dominance of the win belies the 2-1 scoreline, Celtic were miles ahead.

Speaking of dominance, it was rewarding to read that Barry Ferguson endorsed Celtic’s Generation of Domination in his Daily Record column. He wrote about our “decades of dominance”.

Although he goes on to say, “let’s be very, very clear. This dominance has to stop.”  Back in the day (January 2005), I asserted our G.o.D. started in 2000, so we are now onto the third decade, if that’s how Barry likes to count them, out the second generation, if you prefer.

What was missing from Barry’s piece is any hope that things were going to change. Barry is not as daft as some make out.

Better a trophyless Saturday than a trophyless existence.

Yes, positivity is my weapon, but I have another two – my GP and the consultants and clinical staff at the Carlisle Cancer unit and the Freeman’s Cancer unit Newcastle, and the support from yourselves at CQN.

I have met some of you at the Shipbank and aim to visit again this year.

“Possibly any word of impending departure should have been in the news. As employees of the club, the first duty should be the welfare of that club, not to protect a manager intent on leaving.”

    ——————————-

Even more possibly and even more should it have been kept out of the news cycle. As players and sportsmen they realised the same as the manager and coaches that focus should have been and was on the Cup Final preparation.

Most fans understand that too especially if they have played in a team set up.

Only the Professional window hangers and Hello Magazine aficionados want to get distracted by this sort of stuff.

One simple question- If you knew about it, for sure, before the Cup Final, what changes would it have made to your life or attitude to the team?

    My view is….

It was out there. I was told before the Hibs game. Looking back, the players may well have known before the ibrox game. people tried to push the ‘oh these are meaningless games’.

Nonsense. Ange (The Celtic Coach) wouldn’t have put up with the players swinging a leg.

Ange (The soon-to-be spurs coach wasn’t too fussed with these performances).

Even if the suits were still hoping to change Ange’s mind, they should and hopefully would have been focused on a replacement.

I just hope that we are recruiting in a better class of showers…..

  5. Mrs Bacardi has reminded me that I have a powerful fourth weapon. That is my desire to see my grandchildren become adults. Three granddaughters and one grandson ages from 8 to 12 at the moment. They love this old grandad age 74 and a half and look after me.

  6. Man City’s treble is all the more remarkable when you consider all the players were born within 4500 miles of the Stadium !

Good luck ,I have 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren ,and they keep me on my toes ,and I want to see them achieve their ambitions ,

Look forward to your grandchildren achievements and time will be irrelevant HH

  8. SFTB,

If I had known Ange was leaving before the Cup final it would have made absolutely no difference to my attitude.

Our players are highly paid professionals who are with Celtic to win silverware. They would have respected Ange’s decision and honesty.

We would still have won the game regardless with a full team back in contention.

Managers come and go. We know that. We understand that. We get it.

However what we don’t get is the chest thumping and the public statements stating ” I will be at the club as long as they want me ” only to walk out at the first opportunity.

I loved Ange as a person and his approach to football. I believed him. I really thought his word was his bond. However

    How naive of me.

I still wish Ange well, however I don’t think I will be so trusting in future.

There is also the minor matter of Season Ticket sales. If people at our club knew Ange was leaving, should the fans have been told prior to purchase?

Again, it would not have changed my decision to renew.

A bold statement I am not yet ready to make, but feel I will eventually be happy if it happens and we get what is a coach with experience at the top level and one we know can take it up here.

Would he give us three years?

*11 year ago when I had 6 grandweans, 7 now, newly retired I decided tae pack in the don revie as I wanted tae see my grandweans graduate, 2 down now so still time to see the rest.

  14. According to the usually reliable Stephen McGowan of the Mail, Michael Nicholson & Chris McKay have flown to Mallorca for in person talks with Brendan Rodgers about becoming the next manager of Celtic Football Club.

  15. Tontine Tim,

I think its gonnae be something seismic like a Grandkid for me to gie up the Don Revie.

I hope yer well over the water.

Ange moved so quick but we still have Callum there, JK may well go, unless he was getting the Top Job, he needs to Go for his own development, IMHO.

He is a Great Celtic servant, and when all these Great Managers speak so highly of him, I mean I ain’t there, but it speaks volumes……. Not really your Era…MARRS

  16. Re-miss of me,

Ron Bacardi, keep going as we are gonnae do something special Again in the Billionaires playground, we need to keep as many players as possible, Hatate & CCV especially. I’m resigned to Kyogo going to Spurs.

Reo for me was the best Player in the Country this last Season, ably assisted by so many TOP DRAWER players that are gonnae get bettah and better.

I seen Monumental progress in Daizen’s crosses into the box, as an example.

  17. Looks like its Brendan. If it is,the Board have doe a fantastic job.

I will be happy, just to get it all done, and get on with the job for the new season.

Great possible appointment.Celtic success is all that matters. Not some fans grudges abut the past.

    We move on.

  18. McGowan reporting Nicholson and finance director flew to Majorca by private jet to speak to Rodgers.

They would only go to those lengths if BR had shown enough interest in the role over the phone and and had invited them to his private home. BR ego is big enough to have them travel over there and Celtic happy to play along. These conversations can be had over zoom etc so why the need to fly over and more personal touch?

Also raises question, who has leaked this to the Daily Mail journalist and why, timing etc? McGowan wouldn’t release an exclusive which would rock his relationship with those inside Celtic, so its reasonable to assume Celtic hierarchy have no issue with the story.

My hunch is that DD wants BR to return and its either happening, or Celtic are buying time until BR gives them an answer, or he’s not interested and we are serving someone else up but happy to put it out there that we tried for BR .

  19. I read an article on Maresca (it might have been on here) the other day. Two points I picked up were that he fell out with people on a couple of occasions and secondly, he seems to place playing beautiful attacking football above winning games.

I worry about people becoming involved in conflict at clubs. It usually involves an exit and at Celtic, winning and playing good attractive football both go hand in hand.

  20. I’ve sat beside the Legend.

I just wish philvisreturns wiz Harald Brattback.
