Turmoil in Zenit squad

365

There’s turmoil in the Zenit St Petersburg squad. Two players, striker Artem Dzyuba and midfielder Oleg Shatov, are in conflict with the club and will not travel to their winter training camp in Dubai.

Both players are current Russia internationals; Dzyuba scored eight goals in the Euro 2016 qualifiers, making him the country’s top scorer in the tournament. Zenit face Copenhagen in Dubai on Monday, the first of six friendly games, before they face their first competitive game of 2018, in Glasgow, four weeks tomorrow. Their last game was on 11 December.

Some poor Celtic scout will be charged with taking in Zenit’s three games in Dubai next week. It is a thankless job.

Get it done.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT NOW FEATURING TOMMY SHERIDAN

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 30th instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Kevin Graham is joined by Scotty Alcroft to interview Scottish pro-independence politician, Tommy Sheridan, at The Penalty Spot in Glasgow.

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

The other voice you may hear throughout this episode is that of former Celtic striker, Frank McGarvey, who is a friend of Tommy’s, and who was also interviewed separately that day for a future show.

You are sure to enjoy Tommy’s eclectic input, as he discusses everything from Catalan independence to Coolio, with a constant undercurrent of that thing called Celtic.

  1. SFTB. Great post! Some really valid points. From our undisputed position of power I would love our Board to demand of the SFA to rip up or renegotiate the TV deals and insist ALL our home League games be played 3pm Saturdays.A different distribution of the monies could be a sweetener.

Our Board should ask for a real rise in the number of away tickets at 20 pounds each. The number would vary re the opposition.

A demand for the restructure of the governing bodies would come sooner rather than later. HH.

  2. Morning HT. Here in the Heilan`s only one reply so far. From the Conservative MSP, who supports repeal of the odious Act. Appreciate the work you guys have put in. HH.

  3. My friends in Celtic,

Celtic have set the standards. It is generally acknowledged that we have not lived up to these standards in the last few months.

It is not mischievous to point this out.

Many of us praised them to the hilt during our unbeaten run and i also stated that frequently we were the most entertaining team to watch in these Islands.

Over the last few months we have not been at our entertaining best. Undeniable.

One of the pertinent spin offs about E mailing our elected representatives is that it shows how insignificant many of their political profiles are.

I have actually heard of very few of the +120 MSP’s . I wonder what contribution they make to society.

Just nodding your head when the leader speaks or blindly unquestioning following the party line is not good though.

Generally we need more political figures who can think, speak and reply for themselves .

    Hail, Hail.

  5. Will the ever lengthening injury list mean a change of mind in Kouassi going out on loan, or hasten the signing of John McGinn? Or both? Hmmmm ………

  6. I noticed Kris Commons showing his colours in the SMSM, this was never in doubt and a certainty with this little petulant man, I did tell you al 18 monthats ago what his game was and now he is proving me right, I was shot down in flames and slagged about what I said about him , and all because his mouthy misses went on a couple of supporters buses to away games, it wasent made public that his misses was not to well liked with the Celtic WAGS either, just making a point. HH

  7. Can we recall Ryan Christie ?

All those injuries. The bhoy would have a chance to play and impress.

  8. With the injury to Rogic which will keep him out to March I think we should recall Ryan Christie if this is possible, all very well getting the lad playing time he would need to play for Celtic now.

  9. Tony

I liked Kris Commons the player. I’m liking Kris Commons the man less and less with each passing interview or newspaper article.

Not quite at the Andy Walker level of annoyance but I can see him getting there.

  10. TD67

Dont read papers, but I have noticed Kris Commons along with former players captains and managers are very much Old Firmists.

  11. I think Ryan Christie’s loan agreement is to the end of the season .

Ability is not in doubt: Has he gained the mental toughness required though?

    Settle an argument;

Anyone born after say the mid 80’s potentially won’t have a clue what a backup wiz… n I’m not explaining it, but, the question I need settling is this:

Could a backy pick the baw up? I say he could, my mate says he couldn’t?

    Yes or no?

  13. TNT.

When we played, a backy could pick the ball up.

I suppose it depends on who owns the ball. His rules.

  14. Look Kris Commons is only interested in one thing, and thats Kris Commons. His appearances in his latest guise as tv pundit are cringe worthy at best. He is not a Chris Sutton, he’s not brave enough, he only says things that he hopes will get him noticed, he’s like a slightly slimmer Ally McCoist, I did say slightly.

  15. Morning all

Later start today as doc’s appointment to see about my lugs. ( Cannot hear out of right one very well).

Disapointing news about Griff and Tom R to go on top of the Marvin C and Stuart A news. Hopes that we would resume after the break strengthened pretty much dashed though hopefully we will be revitalised- last year we played just about our best football of the season in the first 6 weeks after we got back.

I do not contribute as much as some round here and my comments rarely elicit much in the way of a response – perhaps I should nail my colours more firmly to either the Happyclapper or Mineshafter masts. I find this split here increasingly unappealing – perhaps I have spent too much time working in dreary offices but I am a bit of a grey man rather than one who sees only black or white.

I like a lot about what is going on at Celtic these days- when it plays well the team is a joy to watch and in some games this season has arguably surpassed the peaks of the first half of last season. Admittedly our best European performance – v Bayern in Glasgow- went unrewarded but in it I did think we looked a really good team. On the subject of negativity I found the emphasis on a poor first half hour v Anderlecht in Belgium (which I did not see) a bit annoying as for the hour I saw we played pretty well that night too. I would like to see Brendan playing two genuine strikers more often than he has but I think the manager is more flexible tactically than he is given credit for.

But there have been downsides too and acknowledging them does not seem to mean being worthy of being dismissed as a gloom merchant. I think football is something where impressions – not quite the same thing as opinions- are important and my impression from watching us is that we are not as good as we were in the first half of last season. A lot of the games have been scrappy with the team looking predictable more often than we did a year earlier. Excluding Hibs I do not think any of our rivals have significantly better points totals after 22 games than 2016/7 so it is hard to argue any have made much progess. 8 points is a handy lead but it is less than a year ago- and gives me some statistical backing to support my belief that we have not been as good this season. It does not mean I think we are rubbish or in a terminal decline but honest enough to admit our team is not as good as I thought it would be 6 months ago.

You can disagree with me of course – and I would be interested to learn how being 13 points down on last season’s equivalent is a sign of how we are getting better- but don’t dismiss me as some kind of malcontent for having my own impressions and opinions. I accept that for some criticism of players – past and present- is beyond the pale but for me part of the point of a blog like this is to be able to praise AND criticize players or coaching staff. As long as the negative opinions are not libellous or an incitement to violence pretty much anything should go in my book.

Despite my grumblings I still really like going to see Celtic. Almost 50 years after my dad took me to my first game – a 3-0 win at Falkirk on 16/3/68- I still retain quite a lot of that boyish enthusiasm and come Saturday lunchtime when I am hunting for my scarf and bunnet my mood will be even more like that of my 6 year old self than I am now. I think it is fair to say I ‘love’ Celtic. For me ‘love’ is unconditional- you love someone or something for all its faults or you do not love it all. But love should not mean you cannot accept it has faults that you wish were not there.

    Enough of my wittering.

The backy was able to be an outfield player and goalie combined, therefore had the use of his hands when making a save and would be able to pick the ball up………..IIRC

Excellent post. I’m in agreement with most of that. Whilst I think we’ve not reached last seasons dizzy heights, I’m not too disappointed with our overall position.

I’m expecting a better 2nd half of the season now that the squad has had some well deserved rest.

I’m hoping for the treble again but for me, get the league done and dusted and anything over and above that ( EL progress and /or SC glory) would be a bonus.

  18. Jimbo67 you should change your name to VanGogh67, he was an impressionist too.

I don`t believe it is `generally acknowledged” but, even if it is, as I pointed out the other day, Brendan Rogers believes we are better than we were last season. So who would win in thee Best Placed to Know contest between Brendan and The Generally Acknowledging Brigade?

An enjoyable post. For me, the defining sentence was this one:

“But there have been downsides too and acknowledging them does not seem to mean being worthy of being dismissed as a gloom merchant.”

There will be few, if any, on here who disagree with that. The problem I have re negativity in matters Celtic is with those people who do

    Greatest supporters in the world.

There are times we don’t get near that accolade.

Far too many fans with short memories.

    Dalglish booed on his return.

The King of Kings booed on his return.

Fergus McCann booed when raising our first flag in 10 years.

Now it’s Kris Commons and his wife.

Kris was a great player for us.

Pound for pound ,the arguably best value since Henke, and a great Hunskelper .

“His wife wasn’t popular with other Wags .”

IF that is actually true ,who cares.

She is a good looking lassie ,outgoing personality.

I’m sure there is plenty of jealousy to go around her.

So what is she likes the spotlight.

She has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities.

    As has Kris.

Only last night they were giving up their own time to help the homeless in Glasgow in freezing conditions.

They were pioneers in helping The Knox family cope with Wee Oscars passing.

They took them on holiday to Dubai to help them cope.

Yes they can afford it,but that’s not the point .

They are less selfless that you wish to make out,and are caring and thoughtful people.

    Kris’s crime.

He says if Simunovic goes we need to look for another centre half, but he is sure Brendan is on top of it.

Saint Brendan is not liking the tiny wee bit of comment about dropping standards this season.

Well the truth is ( despite a likely treble) they have.

In fact , how could they not ,domestically.

So Brendan should stop his petted lip .

What shit does he have to put up with?

He inherited 5 in a row.

Has a budget double of the rest of the league combined.

Is loved / hero-worshipped by our support.

Kris Commons and his wife ( who loves our club and it’s support) deserve much better.

You should be ashamed of yourself for those comments about both of them.

Kris and his wife continue to be a much loved part of the Celtic family in my house.

    More power to their elbows.
