Two faces of Sturgeon for Celtic/Aberdeen and Newco

281

Ask anyone at Celtic Park or Pittodrie what the consequences are when players at Scottish clubs are and they will tell you: games cancelled for two weeks by the Scottish Government, a “yellow card” issued by the First Minister herself.

At the time, Ms Sturgeon said, “We can’t have privileged football players just deciding that they are not going to bother.  This can’t go on.”

There was, however, no grandstanding from Sturgeon yesterday when two Newco players were caught by police breaking Covid rules.  Instead, the Scottish Government slipped out a statement COMMENDING Newco:

“Players maintain the sporting bubble by not compromising any of these things when away from the heavy regulated training or match environment, and we expect clubs and their staff and players to fulfil their responsibilities and apply all of these measures rigorously.

“We commend Rangers for taking such swift and decisive action in this instance, to protect the rest of their squad and wider public.”

One club is commended for doing that two others were punished for.  I know how things work in Scotland.  The SNP is far from popular among supporters at Ibrox, which remains an important political constituency, but turning a blind eye when the First Minister grabbed the opportunity to jump on Celtic is unworthy of the office.

  1. This is not a rhetorical question:

Why did the Government congratulate Sevco?

I am sure there is not a factual answer but does anyone have a considered suggestion? eg Is it simply an attempted vote-catcher?

  2. For balance the Uk has trade deals with many countries where persecution knowingly takes place and has the cheek to refuse Asylum on the basis of a lack of evidence.

Not sure you are up to speed with the trials and tribulations of the broad church that is the CofE?

I’m sure the Catholic Church in England took in a cohort of ex High Anglican vicars / priests when they were having their little spats about various issues surrounding church policy 20 years ago.

Most of them were even married — probably even old school Tories amongst them — but they were welcomed into the English branch of the Church of Rome without too much trouble. I think the situation might be ongoing as the CofE wrestles with its future so please don’t be so hard on them — they might one day become your parish priest.

Greenwich Pineapple / 11 months ago — surprised to see the priest and I think his wife talk to parishioners after mass.

My first thoughts were that the church cleaner has being given new responsibilities but on closer inspection it looked like she was one of the family. These ex Anglicans — they sure get about.

Looking forward to a similar situation developing at the Holy City.

In the 80’s I am sure there were discussions to bring the CofE into the “Catholic” orbit.

There have been suggestions that woman priests was a play by the CofE “liberal / happy clappy wing to make sure it could never happen.

  4. I had a look on FF forum yesterday, their fans fully expected the media, SPFL and SNP to go to town on them and to postpone games. They think the media is run by Tims, they think the SPFL will do anything to punish them, especially after the massive fallout earlier this year, and they hate the SNP and assume the SNP hates them.

    Go figure.

Well as you instructed I’ve been reading up and I’ve got as far as this.

‘Don’t speak of your Protestant minister,

Nor of his church without meaning or faith,

For the foundation stone of his temple

What now? More reading, or does that about cover it?

  6. Looks like those of you that fly to and from Glasgow Airport will have the pleasure of seeing huns branding everywhere.

    ——————–

RANGERS have announced a new partnership with Glasgow Airport.

Gers commercial and managing director James Bisgrove said: “We’re delighted to form this exciting new partnership that creates a strong link between our City’s International airport and Rangers Football Club, as we continue to drive our club forward as a global brand.

“The visual presence of Rangers Football Club upon arrival and departure from Glasgow Airport, underlines our position as Scotland’s most international football club and will support a wide range of club commercial activities.”

Glasgow Airport will also benefit from branding at Ibrox, while supporters will be given the chance to win prize getaways and other travel benefits.

It comes just 24 hours after the Scottish Premiership giants teamed up with the owner of Cadbury as the club’s new official snacking partner.”

Yes, I’ve never understood the Hun/Sevcovite assumption that the media (including the BBC), the SPFL and the SFA are all against them. Have they ever read, heard or seen on TV anything even, mildly inflammatory, derogatory about them or the previous incarnation? There is a strong victim mentality about this incarnation as they are no longer top dogs, very few will admit it but it’s true and they know it.

Every organisation and media outlet have bent over backwards for them since they were formed but ‘everybody is against us’ is the cry!

    Hunbelieveable!

  8. St Albans Cathedral — had to check that it was CofE and not some long lost bastion of Rome that had missed out on the dissolution of the monasteries.

    All candles communion and ceremony.

The blue and yellow St Andrews cross threw me as well.

  9. DENIABHOY

Only Sevco could come up with a commercial opportunity at an airport with it’s empty and no one is flying!

I don’t know if it’s because they’re Proddies or because they’re English, but they do seem a bit confused to me.

Mind you I remember the anarchist Albert Meltzer remarking on the strong links between British Trotskyism and Catholics, but he was referring to High Church Anglicans like Reg Groves, Eric Heffer and others like that.

The point remains. The only people going to Heaven are members of the one true faith. It’s unfortunate, but there it is, and there’s no point offering false hope to all those poor unfortunates who by accident or design are not members.

  12. Jeez.

I sometimes wonder how gullible folk have to be to fall for the SNPs spiel and then occasionally you realise how easy it is.

  14. MCPHAIL BHOY – It’s so all the players jetting in to sign for them think the huns even have their own airport :)

Most International team in Scotland, where the feck did they dream that up?

What about the Uniat Church in the Ukraine?

They seem a bit mixed up — Greek rites but pray towards Rome?

Are they in your good books?

Narcissism of small differences and all that.

  17. Ernie.

There are people in this country who believe the pope is the anti-Christ and you are a devil worshipper. Their faith is every bit as strong as yours. They don’t make the rules.

You are a man of Faith and like all people of Faith you afford yourself the luxury of believing that you are right and everyone else is wrong.

    It’s an education thing.

Not until we’ve cleared up this dog/cat thing.

  19. So ‘Scotland’s most international football team’ now has a ‘snacking partner’. Who on earth writes this guff?

  20. Maybe it is just me, but it has been a longtime since I felt discriminated against in my daily life for being perceived as a Catholic.

I see no government legislation that stops anyone Catholic from doing anything

If it is happening to any of you, or your family then call it out.

  21. Ernie,

Why i said”I would like to know who made the statement”.No name to it.Was the statement made,in that way.Are the Media telling the whole statement. We have no way of knowing.Might seem far fetched to say that, but they have minced up the truth plenty times before.I don’t trust them.

If you know exactly what was said, who said it,in what context it was said, let me know.

Cultural hegemony. Yes, I`ll go along with that.

I often think that those who believe that they` can think for themselves`should give a wee bit more thought to cultural hegemony.

“When the Bolingoli thing hit it was the last straw, it took Celtic a week to suss what had happened.”

    ————————————–

We played Killie on Sunday 9th August. On the 10th August the newspapers quote “After belatedly learning of the trip, furious Celtic bosses hauled Bolingoli in for a heated meeting at Parkhead on Monday”

They reported “On Monday night the defender – who has since tested negative for the virus – said: ‘I have made a huge mistake. I want to apologise to my manager, my team-mates, the supporters, everyone at Celtic and so many others for letting them down so badly.

‘I am guilty of a major error of judgement. I know what I did was wrong and I know that I must now deal with the consequences.’

The club has now launched an internal probe.

A spokesman said: ‘Celtic Football Club has taken its response to Covid-19 extremely seriously and we are pleased that, to date, we have recorded no positive tests.

‘Our staff have given so much in this area, working tirelessly to ensure that all players and other club personnel are safe, fully aware of their own responsibilities and familiar with all guidance and protocols.

‘Safety must always be our priority.

‘Clearly, a full investigation will now take place and the club will take all appropriate action.

‘Subsequent to the player’s return he has recorded two negative tests in the past week.’

The Celtic reaction time was just as quick as the Sevco reaction time. The only way Celtic could have acted quicker was to convene on the Sunday evening. It certainly did not take a week and I am surprised at our own putting out this false narrative.

On the Jones/Edmundsen issue , I lean more to TBB’ side of the argument. Rangers punished their players as soon as they heard about it ; so did celtic with Bolingoi. Both the SFA and the Celtic Board are bound by legal poicy on disciplinary procedures and, beyond the immediate suspension of hte player(s) cannot issue instant judgements until there has been an investigation with the player being present and/or represented.

It took the SFA until the 14th August to issue their citation to Bolingoli and it took until the 28th August for the governing body to ban Bolingoli for 5 games (compared to the 3 game ban suffered by the Aberdeen 8). It took them until the 21st September to issue a £30k fine to both Aberdeen and Celtic, though they on;y paid £8k each with the rest suspended.

Celtic’s prompt action and fining of Bolingoli and issuing their own citation of an investigation did not head off the wrath of the Scottish Govt, and it certainly did not solicit a letter of commendation. In the end both clubs meekly accepted their fines knowing that a wrathful Scottish government was inclined to be more vengeful shoul they have complained.

There are several subtle but telling differences in the Edmondson”Jones case.

    1) Someone did the Ibrox club a favour in telling them ahead of the press so they could be proactive. in contrast, Celtic were blindsided by the lies of Bolingoli and the delay of release of information by the press.

    2) Neither Edmundson or Jones contaminated any other player in their bubble; we cannot say the same of Bolingoli and the Aberdeen 8.

    3) The Government issued hostile noises towards Scottish football in general and that encouraged the SFA to be hard and seen to be hard on both clubs. In contrast, Sevco got a surprising letter of commendation.

The issues of actual Covid outbreaks at St. Mirren and Killie are red herrings. You cannot be fined or prosecuted for suffering Covid; only for breaking the Covid regulations, and neither club had done so.

So, while the letter of commendation is bizarre and inexcusable, the Scottish Govt. have not as yet done much wrong here in the way of punishment. We can fully expect that the SFA will take some timeto gather info from Sevco and , in due course, Sevco will fine and punish these two players. Later, the SFA will fine and punish both players and Sevco FC with a fine, most of it suspended, for the club and both players. They will issue a short playing ban to both players too.

I have no love of the SNP govt; but the only thing we have on them is their etter of commendation- “What’s that about?”

Before we go OTT on the matter- let it run its course- this is not over. And remember, Leigh Griffiths did not suffer any action from the government or the SFA for his house party being over numbers. They could have, though and they could have encouraged the League or SFA to do so .

So, let’s have a bit of balance/ Let us see if the SFA fail to punish Jones & Edmondson and Sevco. ANd let us see, then if the SNP makes any “populist” announcement either way
