Two faces of Sturgeon for Celtic/Aberdeen and Newco

281

Ask anyone at Celtic Park or Pittodrie what the consequences are when players at Scottish clubs are and they will tell you: games cancelled for two weeks by the Scottish Government, a “yellow card” issued by the First Minister herself.

At the time, Ms Sturgeon said, “We can’t have privileged football players just deciding that they are not going to bother.  This can’t go on.”

There was, however, no grandstanding from Sturgeon yesterday when two Newco players were caught by police breaking Covid rules.  Instead, the Scottish Government slipped out a statement COMMENDING Newco:

“Players maintain the sporting bubble by not compromising any of these things when away from the heavy regulated training or match environment, and we expect clubs and their staff and players to fulfil their responsibilities and apply all of these measures rigorously.

“We commend Rangers for taking such swift and decisive action in this instance, to protect the rest of their squad and wider public.”

One club is commended for doing that two others were punished for.  I know how things work in Scotland.  The SNP is far from popular among supporters at Ibrox, which remains an important political constituency, but turning a blind eye when the First Minister grabbed the opportunity to jump on Celtic is unworthy of the office.

  1. Not party political in any way.

However, hugely inappropriate comment from Scottish Govt.

    They needn’t have said anything.

That assumes that the SMSM had the photos as soon as Boli landed. They may only have got them much later.

  3. David 66,

Surely you can see the difference in the offences. No comparison to what Boli did.If the story is true, the Hun players have been punished in the same way other players since, for the same offence, have been punished.

No use just howling at the Moon for the sake of it.

  4. I dont think the major breach of regulations by Margaret Ferrier puts the SNP on particularly solid ground when it comes to punishing people for transgressing

The Huns have suspended the two players, the SNP have done the same for something far more serious.

    It’s not really surprising.

I agree however both Aberdeen and Celtic were fined as well as the players – not in this case as far as newclub is concerned.

  7. TB – There is no difference to what all the players have done.

The clubs allowed their players to do what they want, according to the Scottish Government.

Don’t be blindsided by the shit you read form the SMSM or Government.

Why did the SNP government think it appropriate to commend the huns for their actions?

    Why say anything?

  9. ERNIE LYNCH,

I have no idea why? Ridiculous. But I would like to know who made the comment.

  10. The worst IMO,was the huns playing Dundee United in a bounce game, with no Covid test results, swept under the carpet. A commendation from the Government, for breaking the rules, that tells us all we need to know.

  11. readin back to overnight, the revelations about Rocky being a cat and the ongoing patter was quite funny, comedy gold.

  12. David 66,

Listen, its me you are talking to here.I don’t pay any attention to the guff from the media.Find it ridiculous, and rage at it,but I never believe it.Still can’t believe though, that you think what Boli did,was the same as having a party in your house.I can understand the rage at the time. The game had just re-started,and we had eejits already acting like eejits.Personally,I don’t think it was anything sinister against our club.If it had been,we would have had points deducted. No matter how you slant it ,the punishment for the Hun players is in line with whats happened since.

In an article in the Catholic herald, an england based catholic newspaper, Michael Gove stated that Theresa May is the u.k’s first Catholic prime minister.

There are around 5m Catholics in England. There are around 5m anglo-Catholics. There are over 20m people who consider themselves church of england which is the church closest to the Catholic church. 1 in 5 people living in england are eligible for an irish passport which means 1 in 5 people living in england have an irish parent or grandparent.

We leave the union at our peril.

To live in the most bigoted anti-Catholic country on the planet.

U.k wide we are in the majority. In Scotland we will be a tiny minority.

  14. ERNIE LYNCH @ 1:52 PM,

    “Why say anything?”

Well at the time of the Bolingoli breach, there had been a number of incidents that were pointing to a lacksadasical approach by Scottish Football Clubs.

A Celtic player went abroad when he shouldn’t have

He came back and didn’t quarantine as he should have

He trained with the Celtic team

Then played in a match with Kilmarnock

Before this came out blogs like CQN gave Aberdeen pelters [people in glasshouses eh! Let’s hope there’s no repeat]. When the Bolingoli thing hit it was the last straw, it took Celtic a week to suss what had happened.

Many wanted points deducted from Aberdeen and Celtic, lots of pressure by the public on the Government to put football in lockdown again.

Football was given a yellow card, a warning to get it’s house in order.

The players were fined and the Clubs were censured but were mainly given suspended penalties.

So the point is, what is two faced Sturgeon expected to do…

Order a red card and close down football? That would be consistent.

Or point out that Scottish football has raised the bar.

Giving Scottish Football a red card, would be unfair and lacking a little common sense IMO.

Remember, the Celtic Board turned a blind eye to the 5 way agreement, can’t remember reading about their two faced approach on a CQN lead article about that.

    Hail Hail

  15. Politicians have long memories, the repeal of the the Offensive Behaviour act being one that really irked the SNP and even when told to by a vote in Parliament didnt repeal this until something replaced it, Mathieson lost his job and Yousaff is now in there and is trying to get hate bill legislation through despite opposition from parts of society, will they come down harder on some than others , well look at the decisions taken in response to events and make your own mind up.

    An inkling.

Does it tell you anything about their attitudes? Their priorities?

Or do we just file with all the rest of it, The Mackaskill reaction to the singing at Hamden, The Christine Graham ‘even up the score’ comment?

Just shut up and ignore it and draw no inferences or conclusions?

Theresa May’s father was a vicar , did she convert to Roman Catholicism?

    ###

No. She’s Cof E. Some High church Anglicans like to think of themselves as Catholics. But don’t worry, they’re not and they’re all headed for eternal damnation like the rest of the Prods.

  19. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Hhmm.

Makes you wonder what would have happened had the police not given penalties (no pun intended).

    Their intervention is significant.

If not caught – would Jones and Edmondson have returned to the squad?

In this instance, Scottish Football has NOT raised the bar.

    Footballers have broken rules.

Club has reacted to rule breaking as soon as it became aware.

Strange also that on the night of Arfield’s party two guys nowhere near the first team are the only one’s pinched?

    The truth will out.

    Hail hail

  20. So an unchecked Scotland, on the balance of probabilties is likely to carry-on in the same vein progressively getting worse. Schools would be first. Still no St Pats celebrations despite the heritage of many Scots who happen to be Catholic and from Irish descent.

The persecution of Neil Lennon and subsequent failure in the justice system would meet the criteria for Neil Lennon to be successful in claiming Asylum from another country into the UK, yet, it happened and it was even in the news and in the papers……

Where do you start with this one eyed nonsense. Celtic were punished due to one thing and one thing only Boli is a lying arsehole and put his team mates at risk. Comparing Apples with Oranges, but why let the truth get in the way when you are on a crusade.

  23. westcraigs on 3rd November 2020 2:12 pm

Paranoid nonsense. Your opinions say more about you than the ordinary people of Scotland.

  24. Martim1980, In Dumbarton all Catholic schools had St Patrick’s Day off even though it wisnae a holiday of obligation.

  25. The questions in such cases are;

Is there a sociatal persecution on the basis of race or religion and can this be evidenced …….Yes, substatially. Irish and Catholic.

Did the Government/Justice system offer/give pretection to said persecution? ….No, Edinburgh court case.

    – is there a likelihood it happened? ……Yes repeatedly evidenced over years.

Is there a likelihood it will happen again? Yes, it continued.

    Asylum granted.

  26. In theory Neil Lennon could claim Asylum in Canada(a country who will hear claiments) siting persecution on the basis of race and religious persecution and with the evidence exceeding the burden of proof threshhold would have a very high chance of success.

Therefore, in the modern day, Scotland, in the UK persecution took place publicly without protection to the standard where it’s said we protect people from the “scary” countries often perceived to be “backward”.

    It happens here daily !

  27. Not-Jacinda using any opportunity open to her to big up the TFOD2 — that is not news that is base politics.

The issue here is that the papers are helping out one team while being very cute regarding what they know and when they published it to the detriment of our team.

They are acting like an early warning system for our friends in Govan while manufacturing outrage with news management when it came to the travels of BBG.

Not Jacinda / the Nats have a brass neck you couldn’t mark with a blowtorch — Ferrier proved it and the TFOD2 nonsense is just a flourish to win votes in Ayrshire.
