Two wind assisted teams leave happy

198

From the studio after the game, Neil Lennon correctly noted that Daizen Maeda occupies a vault inside James Tavernier’s head.  The Newco captain seldom gets to play on the front foot when up against Daizen.

Despite this, Tavernier didn’t react to a clearance over the top from Joe Hart until he sensed a wind even stronger than normal on a blustery day.  That micro-climate was a surging Maeda, closing the ball down, as he always does.  If only one of Tavernier’s tattoos read, “Don’t let Maeda run past you” the outcome of the game may have been different.

Tavernier’s clearance struck Maeda’s shin and gave Buckland no chance; it was the seventh touch of the ball from a Celtic player.  Tavernier’s penalty early in the second half ensured his reputation continues to vacillate between being a liability and Newco’s most productive player.  He is neither a good player, nor a bad one, nor an average one; what a curse.

Celtic extended their lead through the most bizarre penalty kick I have seen.  The ball struck Connor Goldson’s extended elbow!  I have watched a lot of football in recent seasons, and I have no idea how that’s a penalty.  It hit Goldson’s arm, good grief!  How many times have we seen this defender get two hands on the ball without conceding a penalty?  The Rules of the Game clearly state, Goldson cannot concede a penalty kick, Newco have grounds for a grievance.

Matt O’Riley’s Panenka should have seen Celtic take control of the afternoon but the game changed early in the second half.  Alistair Johnston got the ball before his extended leg was jumped on by Fabio Silva.  John Beaton initially booked the on-loan Wolves player before VAR asked him to look at the incident.  For my money, if Celtic had not earlier received a penalty kick for Goldson’s handball, this one would not have been awarded.

Goals change games and Newco’s first saw Celtic shrink in confidence.  Beaton watched as Tomoki Iwata was tripped but let the foul go.  Setting aside the big incidents for a moment, I was not happy with the distribution of fouls called by the referee in the middle of the field.  ‘A homer’, as we used to say, influenced by only one set of fans shouting for an infringement.

With Iwata out of position, Newco broke forward and Cyril Dessers scored with his second attempt.  At this moment, our season hung in the balance, but VAR called Beaton to the monitor for the foul on Iwata and Celtic held their lead for a while longer.  Had the game gone level at that stage, I would not have fancied our chances of leaving with anything.

I wanted Callum McGregor on from the start but it was the captain who made the mistake that brought Newco level for the first time, with only four minutes of the 90 remaining.  A careless square ball was intercepted and seconds later a shot from Sima spun off McGregor into the net.

At this stage Celtic were struggling to gain possession in the final third but Paulo Bernardo changed that with a diagonal run and pass to the feet of Adam Idah.  Adam knocked the ball onto his right and shot below two flailing defenders, catching Buckland at his near post.  It was a cracking goal from the Irishman.

That Celtic didn’t see the game out shows we still have some way to go.  With Newco on the attack, Yang left Matondo, and was then sold down the line as the winger cut inside to send an unstoppable shot inside the far corner of the net.

A definitive game of two halves was heavily influenced by the wind.  Joe Hart’s ball for Celtic’s opener was win assisted.  In the first half, when Newco struggled to penetrate Celtic, they were unable to play their normal long balls down the line, an option made impossible by the wind.  After the game, Cameron Carter-Vickers explained that it was difficult for Celtic to withstand an outslaught from a side with a full stadium behind them.  This might be true, but we were also denied easy options to get upfield due to the conditions.

This was a rare game when both sets of supporters could feel happy at the end.  Philippe Clement talked later about the character his side have to come from two goals down at the break.  Brendan Rodgers has the end of the season he would have dreamed of six weeks ago.  We’ll talk tomorrow about what it all means.

Alex McKillop’s family have sent their thanks for the many kind messages left about Alex, especially those who attended this funeral last week.  Take care, all.

  1. There must be an equivalent of 418 on hollow hollow or bunion bears, think we could maybe arrange a swap?

  2. got the impression that thems centre back was getting ready with his elbow in position to give someone a dull one before he made contact with the ball.

I guarantee you like the last time nobody will be caught for the bucky bottle throwing and more importantly no action or threat of stand closure.

    ………………….

I could be wrong but I think they arrested someone for throwing the bottle that injured one of our fans. A teenager if I remember correctly.

  5. I am a little confused as to why the Bookies still have Sevco as odds-on favorites for the title.

I know that money placed determines the odds but I don`t imagine odds-changing sums have been placed since yesterday afternoon.

  10. I think if Alistair Johnston had the benefit of hindsight I would hope that he would have played the situation differently. The diver turned him and at that point your decision making comes into play and he made the wrong decision. As a defender you have to be 100 % sure you are getting the ball if you challenge. He couldn’t have been 50% sure and he needs to improve that in his game. The best the diver could have done was got in a cross and there were players covering. Giving us a penalty opened the doors and our players must have been aware of that. Their other two goals were a flukey deflection and a good strike. Sadly the first mistake imho cost us the win.

  11. Not another bottle incident involving Sevco fans again.

The area behind the goals should be closed down immediately for several matches!!

  12. Liverpool FC can confirm rail seating will be installed in the remainder of the Kop for the 2024-25 season.

Following a successful rail seating trial last season, the club began a phased installation programme throughout the Kop, with the final stages set to be completed this summer.

The work will see rail seating installed in all remaining areas of the Kop and will begin during the close-season. It is expected to continue throughout the first home games of the 2024-25 campaign.

Please note that access to seats will not be affected during this time and supporters whose seat will be changed to rail seating will be contacted directly.

After LFC was granted a Safe Standing Licence at the start of this season, all areas with rail seating have seen the introduction of safe standing areas, allowing supporters to stand throughout matches if they wish.

LFC reviewed the effectiveness of rail seating in relation to fans’ safety during last season’s trial, and subsequently was successful in applying for the Safe Standing Licence.

Rail seating was first introduced in two areas of Anfield during the 2020-21 close-season following a safety review by the Sports Grounds Safety Authority.

The initial trial saw 7,800 rail seats installed on the Kop and the lower tier of the Anfield Road Stand. A second phase saw a further 2,500 rail seats introduced on the Kop during the 2022-23 season.

The latest installation phase took place last summer when a further 3,000 rail seats were placed on the Kop in the remainder of blocks 202-208, down to row 33.

The final phase in the Kop will see rail seating installed in all remaining rows for next season.

They are favourite at the moment as they can, with an extra game, win more points than us.

If they drop anything on Wednesday, or, Sunday, we will be favourite, either for the same reason if we beat St Mirren, and/or, because the last ‘head to head’ is at Celtic Park.

I expect them to win on Wednesday and Sunday, and for us to win on Saturday – so a two-point advantage to them going into the split.

My take is that if we meet them in the first game, we will have our final game at home and vice-versa if it is scheduled for second game.

Methinks it will be game two, with probably our first probably at Kilmarnock – this will ensure there is no decider at Celtic Park.

Nerve-jangling stuff, not at all what we’ve been used to for the last twelve years.

Have we challenged or called out the cheating from yesterday?

*Highly unlikely as we have already made our case to the body that ruins our game, the same charlatans that have hated us since March 1890 when World Champions Renton FC aggrieved at losing players, known as Scotch Professors, to the English league clubs where relatively high salaries were on offer, as well as a fledgling Glasgow east end club who convinced 2 of their stars to join them, wrote to thirteen other clubs inviting them to discuss the organisation of a professional league, all of the clubs accepted the invitation, except Queen’s Park and Clyde, the latter would join the following season.

This new Scottish Football League (SFL) was inaugurated on 30 April 1890, the first season of competition, 1890–91 began with 11 clubs, in membership were Abercorn, Cambuslang, Celtic, Cowlairs, Dumbarton, Heart of Midlothian, Rangers, Renton, St Mirren, Third Lanark and Vale of Leven.

It should be noted here that this was well before Harland and Wolffe moved their operation to Govan bringing with it their workforce who adopted the current club playing out of the neighboring Ibrox.

However the authorities ire at us was as a result of this new SFL headhunting Celtic founder member and future president John Glass to spear head this new organisation, Renton FC was expelled after 5 games for breaching the regulations against professionalism, by playing against St Bernard’s, who had been found guilty of concealed professionalism, we had done the same thing but by that time were too big to expel, however, as I said the SFA have never liked us since then for taking away their control and power over the national game.

While there are rules out there, including suspension from Europe of not just us but all Scottish sides including the national one, that prevent us from taking legal action against the national body, there is nothing to stop us the fans from raising this current but continuous level of cheating by letting the outside world know what we continually face in this the 21st century.

Now I don’t mean by marching tae hunden like they do although the do love a good walk, that’s walk btw, we have the means, Tifos etc, to voice our deep concern and as a well praised club outside of our borders its time to voice our opinion on NOT just Palestine etc but the wrath we face in our own native land.

  15. Superbru Round 32 update

This was a week of difficult to predict fixtures and it has seen the world turn upside down. As befits a time of solar eclipse, the seas are bubbling and the sky is blood red. Bottom rail is on top. The horse has his hoof on the stirrup as he plans to ride his master. The meek are buying up properties and land everywhere and Aipple and Friesdorfer are in the Top 3.

    18 Yard Man- 7 pts

    2= Aipple & Friesdorfer- 6 pts

    3. Hot Smoked- 5.5 pts

Amongst those floundering this week, the most staggering, fumbling and groping were:-

1= Bognorbhoy, wee BGFC & fess 19- predicted all 6 matches and gained 0 pts each

2=BelmontBrian63, Cosy Corner Bhoy & Pannysbhoy- 1 pt.

The computer has declared that this week fess 19 is the Diddy of Diddies and the man whose Grand National Tips must be avoided.

Overall with one set of fixtures and some stray matches to go before Top 6, we have:-

    One Malloy- 212.5 pts

    Billy Bhoy- 204.5 pts

    BC Milan- 198.5 pts

We still have only two who have broken the 200 pts barrier but a few more have change of getting there this weekend.

And, despite, their one week of heady point scoring we still have familiar names in the running for the Cuchara de Madera :-

Friedorfer- 108 pts. He is to forecasting what Fabio Silva is to Resilience & Fortitude

BelmontBrian63- 115.5 pts- He is to forecasting what TikTok Barbie is to Manliness

Aipple- 118 pts- He is to forecasting what John Beaton is to Neutrality.

Our next venture into the murky waters of SPFL judgement will be on Sat 13th April with 5 matches at 3 pm with Sevco heading to Dingwall on Sunday at noon.

There is also a replay of a postponed fixture on Wednesday when Sevco head for their Swim Meet with Dundee. Your score for the original fixture will carry over but you can still change it to predict a draw or a Dundee win provided you haven’t locked your original prediction.

Tx again for your support and I hope your team wins. Hail Hail!

100% correct BADA. Yes we missed an opportunity yesterday, but nothing has changed, it is still in our own hands. I was very proud of our team yesterday, and even at the final whistle when they had each others backs. The throwing incidents need to be kept highlighted in the press by ourselves so that it doesn’t get brushed under the carpet!!! We know that we have missed some opportunities this season. It is a strange one that it is against some so called weaker teams that we have dropped points, but now we know we have no leeway.

I think if Alistair Johnston had the benefit of hindsight I would hope that he would have played the situation differently

AJ went for and got the ball before the hun fell over his legs.

they didnt even mention on Ref Watch that he nicked the ball.

but to me that is the most important aspect of that challenge – the fact he gets the ball completely takes away the ‘clear and obvious error’ factor and so should have ruled out any VAR involvement.

the 100% correct outcome after VAR should have been no penalty or yellow card purely because he went for, and got, the ball – he didnt tackle the player, he tackled the ball.

but as i said VAR shouldnt have been involved

  23. !!Bada Bing!! on

Celtic have written to the SFA for clarification over the Rangers Fabio Silva penalty flashpoint – as they are convinced ref John Beaton wasn’t given the full picture.

Hoops chiefs have concerns over the VAR footage sent to the whistler to consider after his initial decision to yellow card the Gers attacker for diving in Sunday’s Ibrox thriller. Celts believe the clip Beaton was shown on the sidelines did not include the moment Alistair Johnston touched the ball before Silva collided with his outstretched leg.

When is Celtic , or other disadvantaged SPL teams going to take this cheating further ?

the problem is that other teams will feel that they are all disadvantaged equally, and because realistically they arent going to finish ahead of us or the hun then they dont really have anything to gain by fighting that battle because their direct league rivals also suffer the same fate

Celtic are poised to pay multimillion-pound damages within months after agreeing to settle legal claims over systematic child abuse at their feeder club. More than 20 former boys’ club players joined a class-action lawsuit that was due to be heard in court.

And so the inevitable eventully happens.

  28. Some have been having a go at Michael Nicholson over the past year. Michael has a legal background and most probably been heavily involved in this settlement – it could why Peter Lawwell came back as Chairman to offer extra cover.

Let’s wait and see where the money comes from. I have always been of the opinion that it will be down to Celtic as a club to foot this bill. Some others including a few ‘celebrity’-type contributors have insisted that insurance companies would pay. If I am wrong I will apologise unreservedly and breathe a deep sigh of relief. However I stick by my guns until we know more.

It is, whatever the procedure, or, whoever is paymaster, welcome news that the whole sorry saga is not to be dragged through the courts. The media’s lurid headlines appearing day after day would be hard to bear.

Our reticence to spend our so-called ‘nest-egg’ (£60m/£70m…etc) in the bank can now be understood, by those open to understanding. This case has been in the pipeline for years and was trailed by a number of criminal prosecution and convictions. So the sooner it is dealt with and out of the way the better – regardless of the high cost.
