Underestimating teams in August, win Walfrid hospitality tomorrow

923

You and I have enough recent experience to know teams we’ve never heard of, or know little about, cannot be underestimated when it comes to European football.  We should expect, and will get, a very difficult game tomorrow.

The good news is that Hapoel Beer Shiva have lost goals in three consecutive matches after a solid defensive run which saw them keep 8 clean sheets in 12 games.  But they scored four while conceding in two of those games, the only reversal coming at home to Ashdod in the League Cup last midweek.

They shut up shop away from home in their two earlier Champions League qualifying rounds at Sheriff in Moldova after a narrow 3-2 home win, they kept out Olympiakos before winning the return 1-0 in the last round.

Unlike in previous years, we are not facing a team midseason in the playoff round; Hapoel have had a few cup games but will not open their league season until Saturday.

Hospitality for 3 people at Celtic-Hapoel Beer Shiva at Walfrid Restaurant

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have given us three tickets for fantastic hospitality at the Walfrid Restaurant, before, during and after tomorrow’s night’s Champions League qualifier.  This is another money can’t buy opportunity for three people to watch Celtic in a hugely important game in sumptuous comfort.

Anyone can enter the competition, however, as this prize of so incredible, I’d like everyone who enters to donate a recommended £10 to the good work of the Celtic Foundation.

You can donate at this MyDonate page.

The Celtic Foundation work to improve Health, promote Equality, encourage Learning and tackle Poverty (H.E.L.P.) in Scotland, the rest of the UK and Ireland, and worldwide.  It’s your Foundation, you built and maintain its good work.

A few guidelines for the raffle:

Raffle closes at 21:00 BST TONIGHT, so there’s not a lot of time and I’m not expecting many entries.  You will not be entered into the competition if you donate or apply afterwards.

Enter with an email address you are going to check later tonight or early tomorrow, add a phone number, if you like.

You can enter two ways:

By making a recommended £10 donation to Celtic FC Foundation here.  Then email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with Walfrid in the subject line, to make sure I can get in touch with you.

Or

By emailing me the names of every Celtic shirt sponsor and official kit manufacturer.  Ever. To celticquicknews@gmail.com

One of the above will be pretty easy for most of us.  The other will be pretty difficult.  Do the easy one.

Great prize.  Only open for a few hours so there will be little competition.  Go for it!

Thank you, and thanks to Intelligent Car Leasing for supporting our fundraising efforts.

  3. As far as the upgrade cost goes for the Sevco game goes, it is done because the fans abused it in the past. When I had a ticket fro me and my grandson in the Family Section loads of the tickets were used by adults in effect ripping off the club. When I had tickets that required relocation when the Orcs came visiting, same thing happened. I can remember once when I went into the ticket office so I could upgrade the ticket to adult so my brother could come the woman commented that people don’t usually bother, they just use the ticket at the reduction.

Prices may be a bit on the steep side, but in effect it’s a non-season ticket holder who is getting the ticket. £24.50 to upgrade for the 2 games isn’t a massive cost to be honest. The costs to the club in terms of policing, stewarding etc. are higher at these games and this is how they partially recover costs.

I will also use the argument that I offer when people complain about the cost of replica strips – if you don’t agree with the pricing structure it’s simple: don’t buy a ticket.

As far as the cost of the strip goes, I tend to by a hooped t-shirt each season if I can get one; I got a rather fetching wee (well, extra large if I’m honest) Fred Perry top this year for round about £30 and that does me for the games.

  12. Be’er Sheva won their league last year by dint of a very stingey defence.

17 goals conceded in 26 games amounts to 2 goals every 3 games.

Their qualifying games have been won in similar fashion.

A 2-0 win for us tomorrow night will be a handy win.

A 3 goal win for us is highly unlikely but will be very welcome.

The 12th man will have to play a part tomorrow.

  13. Happy birthday to John Fallon TOHG.

And a big Happy Birthday to John Fallon…hope he has a wee special swing fae the crossbar today…

  19. There is an annual golf match played out on the ‘desert courses’ of UAE – Dubai Hoops CSC versus Dubai Loyal….. (Why in God’s name relocate 4000 miles or so to be ‘The Loyal???’ Says it all really).

Each year is honoured with the attendance of at least two former Celts.

Some ten years or so back I was one of the last two pairings on the course needing a win to triumph, alas a half was the best we could muster and consequently lost the match by half a point (Ryder Cup format and all that)…..

So, to the clubhouse at the course; not our usual venue, (15-20 km from downtown Dubai) to offer congrats etc., and remembering that when THEY beat US at the golf, we usually won the league that year/season……..

On entering the clubhouse, my ears were assaulted with the sound of the (not) so magnanimous hun monkeys giving it up to their knees etc., I decided, ‘feck it I am out of here’ and proceeded to divest of the ‘complementary’ drink and food vouchers to the staff, ( many of whom I knew from their spells as pro tem waiting staff at various events in Dubai) hoping that they could make a wee earner on said vouchers.

Just about to call a taxi to rescue me and I am asked ‘Hey F, where you off to, room for another one???’

Despite the cajoling re free food and drink of some to my erstwhile taxi shotgun rider, the big keeper from Halfway stood firm……. ‘Naw, I’m Joe the Toff anaw, I’m no listening to that shegite!’

In the words of C. P. Lesley………. ‘For some reason, we subconsciously expect our heroes to be perfect—or at least free of major flaws. Perhaps it is a relic of childhood adoration …’

    Sometimes eh!

  20. Spoke to a supporter the other day who attends every single game he can, whether the big team or the development squad or whatever. Asked him if he had any influence on those who may be flying Palestinian flags tomorrow and if he could persuade them not to do it inside our ground. He wants nothing to do with a supporter like that who would undermine Celtic. Reckons they’re mostly daft wee boys, used by those who have their own political agenda, who have no love of Celtic.

About summed it up for me.
