United caught in good but fragile football trap

405

It could be a big weekend in the race for the Premiership with Celtic away to bottom club Dundee United tonight and Aberdeen at fifth placed Ross County on Sunday. The gap at the top is currently three points, with Celtic having a game in hand. Tonight’s result will give the league table a true look, at least until Sunday afternoon.

Those of us of a certain heritage cannot take a trip to Tannadice lightly. Despite seeing United relegated since their 80s peak, they were never a bad team. Even now, cut adrift at the foot of the table, they play far better football than any other team I can remember in that position.

The recent Dundee derby was a case in point. United had the lead and should have buried Dundee before the fragility which has stalked United this season caught up with them. Tonight’s game will present a different proposition. Unlike against Dundee, when they went looking to put the game to bed, United will be far more cautious against Celtic, who will have to do their usual shift against a packed defence.

Despite this, United are bottom for a reason. They’ve won two of 21 league games, are 11 points from the play-off spot and need to pull something spectacular out of the bag this month to avoid relegation.

Three points, please, Celtic.

The one redeeming feature (to my mind) is that the assets could end up in the creditor’s pot … !!

We certainly don’t have a Forster, Wanyama or Van Dijk to cash in this time. No diamonds ,only a few lumps of decent grade coal (and I don’t mean Carlton).

Unfortunately ,players who form the spine of the team are always going to be most in demand, therefore if we find any potential diamonds in core positions, they are a cert to be sold.

Teams like Sunderland and Southampton will build their core around them . Tragic.

A load of rubbish. His assist rate alone would tell you that.

You say Stokes is at Hibs level. Anto does not get a game for us because of the off field stuff. So he is at Celtics level not Hibs unless you think they are both the same

  5. My word, an awfy lot of posts about Rangers today. Wouldn`t totally call it obsession, apart from TD67, that is.

Anyways, think United may scrape a draw tonight, they need to fight for everything now, and Celtic haven`t been firing on all cylinders lately. Double it up with Rangers minus 2 goals against Livi and you can have a beer or two to cheer you up.

But he hasent proved that it fits him as a professional football player representing CFC, a position many a kid would love to get the chance, down to the minor league, will either make him or break him, bare in mind here he’s not being let go, he’s getting another chance to prove himself, others didn’t, it’s up to him now.

I think Real Madrid won 3-1, however, the noise when we scored our goal will stay with me forever.

I went to the game with my Mum and Dad, and a mate. We had tickets for the wee enclosure under the stand.

Just before we arrived at the turnstyle a bloke approached us and said he’d travelled from somewhere down south with his brother and they’d bumped into some old mates. They had two tickets for the centre stand and would we like to swap for two of our enclosure tickets.

So Mum and Dad got great seats.

It was a great night and fabulous memories.

You should post more often and thanks for the memories!

Surely a judge referring to assurances not submitted officially through the court proceedings is enough to make an appeal ?

  13. No stranger to such projects myself and unfortunately no stranger to litigation in technology disputes, I’m not at all surprised by the Sheriff’s decision in the arrestment case against New Rangers.

Paul67 did a great informed piece the other day outlining the process of specifing and to a certain point implementing a wireless solution.

However a few points that are key in this situation, 802 had to prove they had an iron cast case, they also had to prove that New Rangers were close to insolvency.

The problem with the iron cast case is that in most projects of this size there are issues, specification, installation, implementation issues. If you pay an “expert” enough money, he can go through all of these processes and highlight a plethora of issues. 802 have got 2/3 of their money, making a case for withholding the last tranche would not be difficult, although certain matters could point to the counter claim being bogus, such as not getting an expert in until the month before the Court case the Sherriff would be minded that the plethora of technical evidence that could be put forward in such a case could only be tested thoroughly in a full Court.

The next problem is the insolvency, to prove a Club is going out of business needs detailed and compelling evidence, arrestment of £300,000 in cash from a Club with the turnover of New Rangers would be significant to their cash flow. They failed to do this, as so many have done before…

That was the game where numbers first appeared on football shorts.

I always remembered it as Bobby Carroll scoring our goal v Real.

Alex Byrne was a graceful left winger, who occasionally played through the middle.

Big Doug Baillie, a mountain of a centre half, who played for Airdrie, Them and Falkirk, father of Lex, just couldn’t handle Alex at all.

He was a sturdy built lad, but was physically weak, Perhaps it was a balance issue, as he was easily knocked off the ball.

I remember a winger we had in the late 50’s, early 60’s, called Alec Byrne.

    *aka Alice Byrne

At times a gifted footballer, at other times he would fall over the ball.

*saw him score one of the finest goals I’ve ever seen in a 2nd replay at Hampden against the Hi Hi.

One of the problems with Alec was that few of his teammates had the gumption to pass the ball beyond full back and let Alec run at it.

Like others of the time he was a victim of tactical naivety on Celtic’s part.
