Vastly improved Celtic return to Ibrox

252

When we lost 1-0 at Ibrox earlier in the season play was focussed on Odsonne Edouard until he was replaced by Ismaila Soro (yes, really) and Kyogo moved into the central position for the final 23 minutes.  Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota had yet to join the club, we didn’t have a fit left back and two of the starting line-up knew they were on their last outing in green and white hoops.

Despite this, and playing before an exclusively home crowd, Celtic enjoyed 66% possession and Edouard missed a chance that he hoped Crystal Palace did not see.

Only four of those who started for Celtic are likely to do so again on Sunday: Hart, Starfelt, Juranovic and McGregor.  Beyond those who start, we have options on the bench who can change the game if necessary.  Last time, as well as Soro, Ange Postecoglou brought on Tom Rogic, who remains in contention, and Adam Montgomery.  Resources were chronically weak by comparison.

We will bring a new and vastly improved team to Ibrox, one that has overcome the points deficit we left the ground carrying in August and can effectively secure the second trophy of the season on Sunday.

None of this is conjecture.  Whatever the merits of Celtic as they dominated possession and lost in August, the scale of transformation since is beyond any of the hopes we had back then.  Recent form does not guarantee results, but we can draw confidence from it ahead of Sunday.

Dare I say it but credit to the board here and insisting to the Sydney Cup organisers that they can’t use the Old Firm tag. Hopefully the message will start sinking in to some of our own fans who still use it.

Looking forward to Raman Barghwa explaining to the monkeys tonight on Scotland Today that we are half of nothing.

Go on Raman,I know you lurk on here.

  3. Had a look over on FF to see what they are saying about Morelos being pictured at airport on crutches and several bags of luggage. Vast majority see it as a massive blow, no focal point up front without him. He is their main man without doubt in the European games.

There are a few optimists saying it is a bluffalo, early April Fools to wind us up.

The conspiracy theorists think the announcement of the Sydney withdrawal has been timed to soften the blow of losing Morelos.

As always — you have nothing substantive to say.

just the usual moon howling and lack of engagement.

Cumbie — you got the postcode wrong — only 15 miles apart.

Voting record — you don’t seem to have one but the Not Jacinda Cult is strong now.

Economics — you know even less than your average Thatcherite / Big Bang / City bean counter.

RBS shares — you really must have went big when they went cheap.

Ticket — might be able to make it in May so keep that spare ticket handy.

Looking forward to making it to CQN Corner — hopefully before next season.

  5. Can’t help but feel Scottish football looks a little more parochial tonight.

Was it the Dundee United board member who accused the Glasgow teams of being 2 old maids who flash their drawers up Sauchiehall Street?

  6. Bada posted the twitter link earlier but for those that don’t twitter the official YouTube page has also posted the renewal video. I think it safe to say next year was going to be a ‘waiting list’ kinda year anyway but a video like this three sleeps out from a big game gets the blood flowing nicely…

I have got so used to it not being used by the club that I am shocked whenever I hear it said by not one of them. It is usually a sold out pundit like MacAvennie or Provan but I saw the latest Sky advert for Sunday’s game and they found a Celtic fan who used the term- got to wonder if he was prompted to use it?

Thems pulling out of the Aussie trip would be to avoid a repeat of what their fans done at Dens Park, no fast start if that had happened again. Their fans must now think they have the power to influence the board. Hope that backfires on them.

I remember the comment but don’t think it was dundee united. Might have been a Fife team.

Two good news items thus far, no huns in Oz and probably no Morelos. Doesn’t alter our focus or approach to Sunday.

  14. Sending Morelos to the airport on crutches certainly takes gamesmanship to a new level should it turn out to be nonsense.

He’s almost certainly out, the question is for how long for ?

It doesn’t change much for me but it certainly has for the bookies.

The odds have narrowed considerably today between the teams.

UJ is this due to the Sydney Cup?

Wonder how you would have felt if the game only exported hatred and loathing and insecurity? ie if it erupted, this game imo was about exporting that racist and sectarian hatred, guised as a ‘friendly, they are an opponent. We define Celtic, nothing else does,so I for one am glad we don’t play them and the contact is only limited to official games, and the parochial sectarian and racist hatred is not oxygenated.

Agree with you on the parochial nature of Scottish football. It is the underlying reason that the TV deal with Sky is “paltry”, to quote Robertson over at Ibrox. Mind you with the *Rangers pulling out of the Aussie tourney, they have just emphasised the parochiality and probably made it unlikely that a better deal can be found.

On the Dundee Utd point of elderly spinsters displaying their undies up Sauchiehall Street – well that’s a bit rich considering that without four Celtic v *Rangers league encounters, there may well be a much paltrier TV contract, or indeed none at all, to the detriment of all clubs in the SPFL, including Dundee Utd.

There is much criticism and derision of the ‘Big Two’ by others in Scotland, but they account for 80% of the revenue generated in Scottish football and underpin the business as it stands- what kind of sustainable set-up would there be without them?

The other question that follows is what would things look like if one of the ‘big two’ ceased to be? To lose 40% of the Scottish football ‘cake’, with all the resultant ramifications, would make it almost impossible for the one left-standing to operate at current levels. We are not half of the ‘Old Firm’ – but we are, self-evidently, half of the 80% revenue stream(incl TV contract) vital to Scottish football.

  19. That is serious money for an untried teenager. Everyone happy all round

plenty of extra cash for our next trip to Dub……lin 😎

  20. In defence of young Doak. What is the percentage of promising young players who don’t make it? Pretty high would be an understatement – so why not “make hay while the sun shines’?

It used to be “show us your medals” to establish credibility – I”m afraid it’s now “show us your contract & bank balance”…..how can it be other in a sport so awash with money at the top-end?

It is the underlying reason that the TV deal with Sky is “paltry”,

    is it?

    have sky ever said that?

my opinion (as thats all it is, like yours though you state yours like a fact) is that they pay a paltry amount because the majority of the games they show involve one of the 2 teams putting 10 men along their own 18 yard line for the majority of the game, so trying to do everything they can to stop it being an entertainment event

so why should sky pay more for that?

Good move by Ben Doak. The Liverpool support won’t turn against him if he sustains a long-term injury in the line of duty.
