Vastly improved Celtic return to Ibrox

252

When we lost 1-0 at Ibrox earlier in the season play was focussed on Odsonne Edouard until he was replaced by Ismaila Soro (yes, really) and Kyogo moved into the central position for the final 23 minutes.  Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota had yet to join the club, we didn’t have a fit left back and two of the starting line-up knew they were on their last outing in green and white hoops.

Despite this, and playing before an exclusively home crowd, Celtic enjoyed 66% possession and Edouard missed a chance that he hoped Crystal Palace did not see.

Only four of those who started for Celtic are likely to do so again on Sunday: Hart, Starfelt, Juranovic and McGregor.  Beyond those who start, we have options on the bench who can change the game if necessary.  Last time, as well as Soro, Ange Postecoglou brought on Tom Rogic, who remains in contention, and Adam Montgomery.  Resources were chronically weak by comparison.

We will bring a new and vastly improved team to Ibrox, one that has overcome the points deficit we left the ground carrying in August and can effectively secure the second trophy of the season on Sunday.

None of this is conjecture.  Whatever the merits of Celtic as they dominated possession and lost in August, the scale of transformation since is beyond any of the hopes we had back then.  Recent form does not guarantee results, but we can draw confidence from it ahead of Sunday.

  7. On this day in Celtic’s history – April 1

    By Joe Sullivan

    1895

Celtic’s first manager, Willie Maley, had already been with the club for eight years when the man who would eventually replace him was born. Jimmy McStay (below) first saw light of day on April 1, 1895 and joined up with older brother Willie at Celtic as a 25-year-old in 1920. The centre-half would score eight goals in 472 games before leaving for Hamilton Accies in 1934 but he returned to Celtic as manager on the retirement of Maley in 1939. McStay lasted for the extent of the Second World War before being replaced by Jimmy McGrory, but he returned as Chief Scout in the 1950s.

    1907

The club’s first action on this day was in 1907 when Queen’s Park visited on league duty a few months after the Celts had already beaten the Spiders 4-0 at Hampden. Jimmy Quinn and Davie Hamilton scored the goals in a 2-1 win as Celtic neared the third of six consecutive championships. Celtic also beat the Hampden side 5-0 in the Glasgow Cup and 6-2 in the Charity Cup that season and also returned to Hampden in the Scottish Cup final to beat Hearts 3-0 to claim their first double.

    1925

Falkirk were the fall guys on this April Fools’ Day when a Jimmy McGrory-inspired Celtic beat the Brockville side 6-1 in Glasgow. Celtic’s top striker hit four that day with the other two goals coming from Adam McLean and Alec Thomson. The Hoops had previously beaten Falkirk 2-1 at Brockville earlier that term but this result set the Celts up for their next game – the Scottish Cup final on April 11 when McGrory scored again after Patsy Gallacher netted his wonder-goal (below) in the 2-1 win over Dundee.

    1933

The great Jimmy McGrory (below) only ever played for Scotland seven times and he scored in four of the matches. His first two goals came on this day in 1933 when Scotland beat England 2-1 at Hampden. A crowd of 134,710 witnessed McGrory strike in the fifth and 81st minutes with the match-clinching second goal credited with christening the ‘Hampden Roar’.

    1967

In April 1967, Celtic had only the Glasgow Cup and League Cup in the bag while a 0-0 Scottish Cup semi-final draw with Clyde put any hopes of a clean sweep on hold for a while. However, the Hoops went on to win the replay with a 2-1 scoreline and would soon add the Scottish Cup, the league title and the European Cup to the tally.

    1970

This was the day when it took George Connelly (below) only 40 seconds to score against Leeds United in the European Cup semi-final first leg at Elland Road for a 1-0 win. Goals from John Hughes and Bobby Murdoch in front of a crowd of 136,505 in the second leg at Hampden saw Celtic through to the final against Feyenoord in the San Siro

    1981

Celtic beat Hearts 6-0 on this day with George McCluskey and Murdo MacLeod both netting doubles while the other two goals came from Davie Provan and Frank McGarvey. Following subsequent wins over Partick Thistle and Rangers, Celtic lifted the title at Tannadice on April 22 with Tommy Burns scoring the third goal in a 3-2 win.

    1996

This was the night when debut Bhoy Jorge Cadete came off the bench to score the fifth in a 5-0 win over Aberdeen and the noise blew Radio Five Live off the air for about 10 seconds. Simon Donnelly and Pierre van Hooijdonk shared the other four goals between them.

    2001

On this day in 2001, Celtic came up against Aberdeen and this time the league game went ahead at Pittodrie. Didier Agathe hit the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute in front of a crowd of 16,067 in a win that meant, with a league game against Dundee to be played midweek, Celtic could lift the title a week later against St Mirren – and they did.

    2012

Prior to the game against St Johnstone, the players appeared wearing Celtic jerseys with ‘Petrov 19’ on the back in support of Stiliyan Petrov as it had just been announced that he was fighting acute leukaemia. The coaching staff also had his name and number on their tops and there was a stadium-wide tribute in the 19th minute. On the pitch, a goal from Georgios Samaras and an own goal from Chris Millar ensured that the Hoops could win the league in their next game – which they duly did the following weekend with a 6-0 win over Kilmarnock. Thankfully, Stan Petrov has celebrated another EIGHT Celtic championships since then.

I have attended a couple of independence marches in Scotland, one in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh. A lot of flags and banners, including a “Celtic & Rangers Supporters For Independence” banner. Never, not once did I hear an anti-English comment or chant.

I did meet a good few English people on the marches, all supporting Scottish independence.

It was maybe not so clear in the ad that the Gin comes with 2 branded glasses in a gift box and is of a limited edition run of 2022 which promises to be a memorable season.

    —————–

Thanks Burnley78, you certainly know the subject, I can’t confess to knowing much about gin other than my girls drink it and it is quick to make compared to whiskey (hence all the new distillers set up as they can generate cash after a year or so on the gin).

The thing I find strange is that my lot and their friends buy expensive gins , with all the infusions as you say and them fill up the glass with a tonic full of flavours plus fruit. I can’t believe they notice, the difference.

    Gin Anecdote

I was at a gig in Dublin and the Gin Palace is right beside the venue so i was in for a pre gig drink. A young lad was beside me and he ordered 2 G&T (he was on a date).

He specifically asked for a Hendrick’s (v trendy then) with Fever Tree (v trendy too) and then asked for one with cheap gin and Schweppes. Specifically checked before he lest the bar , which one was which.

I sincerely hope the fancy one was for the girl and he was trying to save a few coins in the process – or else he is a git!

About 12 euros for a basic G&T in Dublin centre

No. Leaving an established political and economic Union has been a bad thing.

Even though some (probably most) of the other members states have had somewhat chequered histories.

But being a member of a political and economic Union with another country or countries means you can no longer look after your own affairs.

It’s a trade off most sensible people think its worth it.

  21. Would that be a fair, broad brush summary?

Second was a tap in from Jota driven cross

Third was open goal header after an injury time break out by Callum

Still pretty excited about it 😎
