Virgil is in a different place than Victor and Gary were

709

Virgil van Dijk looks like a level-headed footballer, so I don’t think his game will be upset by his agent’s loose lips.  He has enjoyed a remarkably successful first season at Celtic Park but any attempt by his representatives to create an earner this summer is likely to be inhibited by the three years remaining on his Celtic contract.

There is always a risk of serious injury, but short of that, Virgil’s market value will not diminish in the next 12 months and may even appreciate.  He is in a completely different situation from Victor Wanyama and Gary Hooper, who glided into the last two and one year of their contracts respectively.

It’s a truism of football that those spending a nation’s the mineral wealth on football players tend to get what they want, but it remains to be seen if a handful of Champions League performances are enough to tempt this kind of approach onto the table.  Great player though he promises to be, Virgil’s not been tested at the top level over a prolonged period.

Thanks again for all your support of the Mary’s Meals Malawi school kitchen project ahead of Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day dinner.  You can get involved here.

My 83 year auld da once told me an interesting statistic…..,

    100% of non smokers die.

The decision to use smokers’ and ex-smokers’ lungs for transplant reflects the appalling shortage of donors versus recipients. It doesn’t for a second indicate that smoking doesn’t do huge and often fatal damage.

So many people die while waiting on the transplant list that the nhs had now been forced into this move as something close to a last resort.

  6. I was a smoker for over 50 years, till I went in for my hip replacement op. In nov. 2012, they where tellin me about my pre. Op. What kind of medication I would be on in my post op. I would be on this an that an all sorts of drugs, and seen as I was a smoker they would be putting a patch on me, so I said no forget the patch, as I was on enough stuff I hate drugs of any kind, but I understood that at the time needs must for some of them but the patch I could do without, I woke up from that op. Couldent remember a thing till the next day, as I said I hate drugs and react diff. From normal ( some would load up on that statement) anyway, they next day they where telling me what I had done :( , it was the night of the Celtic Barcalona game, and the guy in the next bed to me had the game on his radio, and when he told me Tony Watt had scored to make it 2-0 I went fecking Tonto :( , and the guy across the ward from me had a knee op. That day and he was shouting over to me to keep it down, un be knowing to me by this time I was gone on an other planet, I picked up a packet of chocolate digestive biscuits launched the right across the ward at the poor guy with the knee op, and the scattered all over the feckin place, they sedated me and I was out of the game the whole night, I was so embarrassed the next morning when they told me, they get you up the next day after the op. To get you mobile as soon as possible so I went over and appolligised to the guy, turned out he was a Tim, and he was ok with it, but he did laugh and say, he did take offence at me calling him a dob :( , anyway after I got out I haven’t had a fag since, and it hasent even came into my mind to have one either, strange night indeed ;) , true story, ask Masty.

Half of smokers die from a disease caused by smoking.

Half of these deaths occur in middle age (35-64).

In a country like UK, each smoker’s death in middle age loses 23 years on a non-smokers life expectancy.

Smoking’s a real mug’s game but the Exchequer loves it !!

  13. Exchequer does love it. But actually shouldn’t. Because once ALL the associated costs are added up the nation as a whole actually LOSES money!!

This is because costs like accidental fires, picking up gag ends, loss of GDP associated with long term respiratory conditions aren’t factored into the headline figures that are usually cited.

  15. Sorry Jamesgang

This is a myth propogated by Big Tobacco based a commissioned research.

Tax is not an issue: governments are ingenious at finding sources of tax.

The problem is Pensions. If no one smoked cigarettes then life expectancy in UK would increase by over 2 years. This would bankrupt every pension and social security system in Europe.

The struggle on this issue between Health and Treasury is vitriolic in Governments.

  16. Thoughts, prayers and condolences with the Brennan family, Rose will be very proud of her legacy

  17. Bigyininmilan.

What is a myth? The ‘it doesn’t recover costs’ point I made?

These were the conclusions of scotland specific work undertaken by ash scotland who are as far removed and opposed to big tobacco as it’s possible to be.

But I do def agree about big tobacco’s love of spin and BS in their commissioned research.

As for the overall costings to public (ultimately our) monies, cash saved on pensions is certainly wiped out by the costs to nhs (staff, premises and drugs), GDP and family income (when people are forced to become carers), etc, etc. Catch 22 as there’s then less in the pension pots – at govt and family levels.

Respiratory disease had an horrific cost. Certainly to families but to the public purse too.

  23. Tony Donnelly –

    Great story.

My father was in for surgery about 10 years ago. There was an elderly guy in the opposite bed who had just come out of his own surgery and, like you, was on myriad medication.

My wife and I were visiting my father and the other guy’s curtains were drawn so we couldn’t see him, but he was throwing little brown balls of excrement over the screen at all and sundry. The nurse had to give him a sedative to calm him down before taking on the onerous task of cleaning up after him.

Next morning. The man was brand new and was talking away as normal. Eventually he asked the other men in the ward if they fancied a dip into his big box of Quality Street.

Quick as a flash, my father said, “If they’re anything like the maltesers you were dishing out last night, ye can stick them up yer arse!”
