Virgil is in a different place than Victor and Gary were

709

Virgil van Dijk looks like a level-headed footballer, so I don’t think his game will be upset by his agent’s loose lips.  He has enjoyed a remarkably successful first season at Celtic Park but any attempt by his representatives to create an earner this summer is likely to be inhibited by the three years remaining on his Celtic contract.

There is always a risk of serious injury, but short of that, Virgil’s market value will not diminish in the next 12 months and may even appreciate.  He is in a completely different situation from Victor Wanyama and Gary Hooper, who glided into the last two and one year of their contracts respectively.

It’s a truism of football that those spending a nation’s the mineral wealth on football players tend to get what they want, but it remains to be seen if a handful of Champions League performances are enough to tempt this kind of approach onto the table.  Great player though he promises to be, Virgil’s not been tested at the top level over a prolonged period.

Thanks again for all your support of the Mary’s Meals Malawi school kitchen project ahead of Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day dinner.  You can get involved here.

We have a very weak labour party in Scotland. Being a smoker, McConnell killed the Labour movement here by bringing in the smoking ban. To me that was a kick in the teeth for the working man. I had a pint of lager every night on my way home from work, just one, with a relaxing fag. That diddy done me out of it and I have never set foot in a pub since. Apart from getting on my bus in the ole larkie. I will never forgive Labour for that traitorous stand. He went against everything the working man stood for and got his just desserts. The working class of Scotland will always stand up for ourselves, the fecking right wingers, the best of luck. If we attain independence, I expect a mass exodus of right wingers fleeing south and the majority on northern englanders jumping the border northbound. :-))

  5. Jude/Rye….exactly the point I was trying to make. What is this coach’s credentials? There are too many people with an eye for a player who believe this is a youngster who will make it.He needs ‘coached’ in a kinda Big Jock /Jinky fashion and that skill maybe missing from the existing Staff. Danny?

  6. On the independance discussion.

    Everyone in Dubin asks me about it and the most striking points are;

    1. They are shocked that I don’t get a vote despite my birth cert being reg in Glasgow and place of birth Paisley

    2. They think that Scotland was conquered as Ireland was and can’t understand why i would vote no(if i had one)

My question is – if Scotland goes independent, will football fans be released to support English clubs(as they are now proper foreign) like the Dubs do and see falling attendances at Scottish clubs?

I try not to get involved in the scottish independence debate on here because its really none of my business (being irish, although I beleive in every nations right to self determination) but to say labour betrayed the working man by bringing in a smoking ban is to me crazy.

Multinational tobacco companies exploited the working man,fed him/her lung cancer and heart disease, anyone who takes a stand against that gets my vote

  11. Eddie, just read up on this, James VI first tried to unify the Parliaments early on his reign in England, during the English civil war there were further attempts by Cromwell, which ultimately failed. Then after the Glorious Revolution(it wasn’t an invasion!) further attempts were made, this time largely by William of Orange, fear of French invasion being a motivator.

Then in the following decade, Queen Anne came to the throne and both the Scottish and English parliaments began negotiations for Union.

I concede my point, Scotland did not sue for Union, my misconception, but I have often heard it referred to as such.

I understand your frustration, but, at the end of the day, it is for the people of Scotland to make this decision, like my son who lives in Finland, he is as frustrated as you, but agrees it is a Scotland decision. :-))

Think there was some talk around the Poland v Scotland game. Rumour was that he would be out of contract at Arsenal and was not prepared to re-sign.

No idea what wage Fab is on but – a fee for FF + his wages .v. Fab (with his experience) for free + extra wages might be a deal worth doing.

Might just be the usual saber rattling by the press.

On another level the smoking ban was a good thing, and inevitable, it was only a matter of time. Passive smoking kills, employers couldn’t ask employees to work in a dangerous environment.

Good evening. Just in fae work. Project manager is up from Leeds. He is an Englishman who’s first team is Celtic, purely because of Lisbon. He is in Glasgow for 6 weeks and wants to attend every Celtic game he can. Anyone know our next 6 week fixtures?

How can you equate smoking with workers rights? Everyone knows smoking is unhealthy, there is no class war in this

My auld boy smoked like a lum but gave up smokin due to tax and seeing a cancerous lung at a morgue plus getting married. He saw his wages better spent on his family but never lost the craving.

Love my dad for that in so many ways, I could never give up the gargle, if i had took up smoking, i would never have given up.

All classes smoke. To base a political alliance on banning smoking in pubs means the alliance was a default and not heartfelt.

I think that is Scottish Labour’s big problem, when tested with an alternative, they failed due to complacency

Yes, I spoke to Chelsea and Qpr fans in Spain last summer and they told me the whole pub they use in West London is pro Sevco with one token Celtic fan. They did admit that the Tim had them all well informed about the Hun cheating and subsequent death. Good on him. I find that the Red Scousers are as pro Celtic as you’ll get in England. Plenty reasons too, not least our support for Hillsborough and the dockers, and for giving them their greatest ever player.

I welcome every opinion, just as I welcome yours. I am nudging the big seven O and have smoked since I was 12 yrs old. I am not condoning tobacco, but to do away with choice is my bugbear. I hate being dictated to on something which brings me and millions of others great pleasure. And to take that pleasure away from them, just because he had the power to do so, and for no other reason, finished the labour party in this country for the forseeable future. Thank ghod, the working class in Scotland are not as PC as the majority of the UK are. :-)) oops and Ireland. only kidding :-))

    Hi, BBB.

I am going to take it as a given that you did not enjoy the sometimes harsh regime that existed over 60 years ago in those hallowed halls on the Cardross Road.

Me ?.. I have mostly happy memories of my time spent there.

Granted there were a few less than sympathetic characters among the teaching staff, but they were representative of those less enlightened times.

Times change. Not always for the better.
