Virgil is in a different place than Victor and Gary were

Virgil van Dijk looks like a level-headed footballer, so I don’t think his game will be upset by his agent’s loose lips.  He has enjoyed a remarkably successful first season at Celtic Park but any attempt by his representatives to create an earner this summer is likely to be inhibited by the three years remaining on his Celtic contract.

There is always a risk of serious injury, but short of that, Virgil’s market value will not diminish in the next 12 months and may even appreciate.  He is in a completely different situation from Victor Wanyama and Gary Hooper, who glided into the last two and one year of their contracts respectively.

It’s a truism of football that those spending a nation’s the mineral wealth on football players tend to get what they want, but it remains to be seen if a handful of Champions League performances are enough to tempt this kind of approach onto the table.  Great player though he promises to be, Virgil’s not been tested at the top level over a prolonged period.

Thanks again for all your support of the Mary’s Meals Malawi school kitchen project ahead of Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day dinner.  You can get involved here.

Declaration of Arbroath. The language used is some of most powerful ever scripted.

But what politics actually lay behind it’s publication at that point in the struggle? Many of those whose seals were attached weren’t actually the biggest hitters from among the Scottish nobility. Several months afterwards there was some kind of purge by Bruce. Pretty ruthless too. Was it a loyalty test? Was it to flush out those who opposed Bruce’s daughter being designated heir and preferred a return to the Balliol dynasty?

    Interesting. To me anyway!

Was browsing the ‘wayback machine’ page on web.archive.org and looking at a snapshot of the Celtic FC official website from years ago when I came across this, from May 12, 2002:

Club statement on Nationwide league speculation

    By Newsroom Staff

Following weekend newspaper reports claiming that Celtic and Rangers will be invited this week to join the Nationwide First Division from next season, a Celtic spokesman said: “We will not confirm or deny whether private talks have taken place.

“We’ve not received any invitation to join the Nationwide League, but we retain an open mind with a view to structural changes, and will view any proposals with interest.”

The newspaper reports had suggested that the move will be proposed this Thursday at a meeting of the Football League’s executive committee, with all the members clubs expected to vote on the plan on Friday.

……..that we spend some of the pile of money we are sitting on to try and retain our better players longer to at least allow them to realise their true potenial (with us) and to attempt to satisfy the aspirations of the manager and the supporters?

Just as everything was going along chummy, the “Bad Celtic” guys turn up, honestly, Groundhog Day stuff, every day it’s the same old, same old,and it only takes one, just watch, this is the opening for the lurking Huns to post now, GIRUYs.

I bought and paid for the construction of 6+ new seats in the new North Stand via the original share issue in 1994 and I can prove it to anyone who wishes to inspect my name on my original Celtic Share Issue Certificate (printed on the very first Celtic team photo).

Who know, maybe you sit on one of those very seats? I will meet you anywhere and show you the document if you want….its the reason I get the accounts every year.

This give me the right to offer an opinion on the way Celtic is run….just as all the others who have put their money where their mouth is over the years.

    So….GIRUY!

Do u think we will turn down bids for FF and virgil and try and keep them ?

Any player that gets bored pulling on the hoops in my opinion should be sold asap. No matter who it is.

But we dont do ourselves any favours, we seem to lose our best players very easily therefor showing lack of ambition to other players and potential new signings.

With no disrespect mate I have answered that question I don’t. Know how many times in the last 18 months, it’s old news and I really am sick of the moaning, I no longer debate on much in here right now, as it’s the same old moaning about the board, Pl, NL, the team, the fans, the now defunct GB, It tires me, same questions same answers, I mostly come in here for a laugh, and talk positive about Celtic, and you also get great news updates on all sorts of things in here, more than the SMSM, so that’s about as far as I go as in debating, but as I always have said, when I see some one slagging anything Celtic, then I will chip in my tuppence worth, as it will only be my opinion and different from there’s, then so be it, most debates in here lead to name calling, and I don’t like that, I’ll stick to the fun side from now on I think, and as I said at the start mate no disrespect.

  5. weeman67- Good find.

I saw Gary Player at Muirfield last year, he came out a TV studio, dapper dressed then proceeds sprint and leap a crowd barrier to sign autographs and mingle with the public.

He will be 80 next year.

(I also saw the legned that is DougC, he wisnae jumping any barriers, just bevvying).

Fair enough, im also sick of it and im sure so are the fans who have genuine concerns about the way our club is going.

You have to learn to accept that everyone has different expetations of what celtic football club should be doing.. Your’s is easily met and ur entitled to it.

I reckon fraser is gone but virgil will still be here. Really really hope we clear out the deadwood. Dont want guys earning good money and given nothing or very little in return.

  7. @celtic midfielder Nir Biton’s injury not as bad as first feared. Expected to miss 2 or 3 games. Forrest ruled out for up to 3 weeks (groin)

I dont think so, i love wingers but to be honest young jamsey is very inconsistent, i wouldnt be too upset if he moved on and we got good price for him.

I when he plays scott brown must play centre midfield .. Not his best position .

I would like to see brown on right ahead of jamsey or lustig right back and matthews right midfield.

Think both of these would mean better performances than what forrest can give.

“as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.”

To paraphrase Ghandi – Irish Freedom would be a great idea. The Ireland of today is the whore of global corporate entities. It ignores the democratic will of its people to appease European super powers and nationalises the debt of banks while condemning hundreds of thousands of the young to yet another wave of exodus.

It’s not very often I speak for the dead, however, there’s little doubt in my mind that Connolly would be aghast at what Ireland has become.
