We hired a builder

When looking for a new manager, Celtic usually try to fix the biggest shortcoming the previous guy had.  In May 2019, Neil Lennon’s biggest asset was his “eye for a player”.  There were other attributes. he twice got Celtic into the Champions League group stage where he delivered some of the most memorable nights in our European history, but Celtic’s decline started with his predecessor’s inability to sign quality players after the arrival of Scott Sinclair.

When it fall apart last season, Neil seemed unable to imagine how to organise a squad that was performing significantly below the sum of its individual parts.  Apparently simple tasks, like how to organise at defensive set pieces.  The answer to that particular question was Eddie Howe.

Howe took a team of lowly £17m misfits and marshalled them into a very solid unit.  He also had other attributes, but that ability to defend a corner kick was very convincing.

I spoke to Peter Lawwell soon after Brendan Rodgers left and again after Neil Lennon’s departure.  Neither Neil nor Eddie fitted the bill he was initially looking at.  On this occasion, Ange Postecoglou fits perfectly.  Technically proficient, capable of withstanding the intensity of our game, with an ability to make us a far better team three years out than we were when he took over.

It’s that last attribute we recruited yesterday.  Neil and Brendan both left teams that were poorer than two years previous.  We hired a builder.

I’m making assumptions based on 1. what we know about how the Celtic board operate, and 2. what is now industry practice for top clubs when appointing managers.

Whereas you are making assumptions based on what exactly?

  2. If Ange doesn’t get his own backroom team in and gets bloomin JK and GS forced upon him then i feel Ange is a sitting duck..

Also are we underestimating Gordon Strachans influence at Celtic Park.always very supportive, never a negative word about the coaching or the players or the board.in fact he’s the very opposite..he gives the thumbs up to eveything the club do.

  3. I don’t know or assume anything , I’m glad you know how the Celtic Board work and your assuming that it is in our best interest to clear out assistants and coaches every time we change manager , who knows , it’s a moot point if we are in fact a top club in the grand scheme of things , sadly.

This is just another example of populist nonsense drummed up by the media and they rely on the likes of your goodself to keep spreading the muck and sowing the seeds of fear , uncertainty and doubt (fud principle) , don’t wish to personalise it , suspect you are a bright chap with a contrary outlook ( which is fine to stimulate chat ) but folk can get caught up in this and the expression useful idiots can be applied to those people

… good to chat real world beckons

  4. not just the Celtic Board, many football teams around the World have a pool of coaches, backroom staff they rely on throughout changes of manager including Barca.

The reasons are they are long term employees who “live” the club and have worked with players through the Youth System.

A new manager will instruct assistants and coaches.

We just announced a new manager, and immediately arguing over what happens next.

We used to mock der hun for their in-fighting.

We can’t even show a little of unity, or indeed civility over a decision, we ultimately have no power over.

Kennedy has been first team coach whilst we succeeded with different managers-an inconvenient truth.

Appears sone being overly influenced news now click bait.

  5. leigh Griffiths is part of a commentary team during the Euros……What a prick , he should be leading the line in every game .

Another what could’ve been , a player that could /should have offered so much more.

I’m sure he’s happy enough with his lot ….fair enough .

Funnily enough I was thinking the same about GS. I’m half expecting him to be out in the media soon contending that a major team rebuild isn’t necessary and that a couple of additions will suffice. In other words prepping us for not spending great deal of dosh.

  8. We spent a lot of dosh retaining the wantaways, and bringing in goalkeeper, left backs, centre back, midfielders and strikers.

still did not win the 10

  9. Is it, in fact , the old Provanmill Park, home of St Rochs?

If so, Springburn must have moved a bit!

  10. “Gordon David Strachan OBE is a Scottish football coach and former player. He played for Dundee, Aberdeen, Manchester United, Leeds United and Coventry City, as well as the Scotland national team. He has since managed Coventry City, Southampton, Celtic, Middlesbrough and Scotland.”

Huh ! What does he know compared with some CQN posters ?

    Thanks anyway.

  13. The more I read and watch regarding Ange, the more confident I am that he has what it takes. Beyond the celtic and European bases videos, blogs and reports. Dig a bit. It’s interesting stuff.

55 years of age. He’s had a long career. He’s had success and he’s had setback. Whatever your trade the latter is just as important as the former so long as you learn from it and improve.

Most of all he seems to have a point to prove and a bit of a chip on his shoulder about lack of respect for the abilities of football guys from down under. Something similar perhaps to what drove Alex Ferguson – provincial Aberdeen up against the big 2 plus the slight he experienced at rangers and then the will to prove himself in England. I think Ange has sonething of the same drive.

Seventy-five years ago this month one of the biggest peace-time tragedies befell the Irish state when ten young migrant workers from Achill Island who were working on the potato harvest in Scotland died in a fire in their accommodation in the town of Kirkintilloch just outside of Glasgow. Read The Sunken Road by Ciaran McMenamin.

A recently published novel setting a young northern nationalist in the trenches of the First World War with the predominantly Orange Ulster Division. Then the post war years and his role in the struggle for Irish Independence.

On a separate note. I am in London and have set my goal to observe the St George flag count typically displayed on work vans and/or private cars. So far all of this week and morning coffee on busy Baker Street and not a singular flag.

Is this disinterest, lack of English belief or something else?

  16. quadrophenian on

    So…

As for the idea Ange won’t handle the pressure up here… Really? Depends what pressure gauge you’re imagining. What if he eats pressure for breakfast? He says he enjoys his work most when he’s least thought of and facing the most adversity. What if HE’s not packing his pants at all? He doesn’t seem to pay meeja anywhere much mind. Shame so many of us let the sevco-supine mob contaminate our thoughts.

Ange carried the expectations of a 25mill sports-mad nation (albeit not one Northern hemispherers give any credence to) on his shoulders at a World Cup and an Asian Cup. And handled it his own unflinching way.

Expectations of say more than half this sports-mad country were hanging on all his international games and perfs; it was huge televised national stuff down here (bigger than 6m Scotland making a Euro tourney after 20 years) and Ange didnt always pander to the media with good grace and polite, PR- political responses. Ange just kept on being Ange: Convinced, impatient, super-focussed, gruff, Greek-Aussie, game-face Ange.

And his Aus emerged from int’l tournaments with great respect and a clutch of winners medals. He rebuilt a Brisbane team by papping out SPL blow-ins like Moore, Miller and Malcolm to play no-name guys and lost souls within a strict salary cap environment and went on a 36-game unbeaten mazy and won two successive titles. I watch the down-under league year on year, guys; A League and the J-League are easy on a par with what’s served up now in Scotland, mibby not the pure quality of what CFC and TRFC at their best. But decent.

As for needing serious backing with serious money, the cheque’s not in this Poste. Scatter-cash isn’t his ethos – it is fast Eddie’s tho’ ! But if you research how Ange builds playing capability it’s by optimising resources to play the right way. He wont be looking for Real Madrid, Man Utd or Bayern phone numbers to buy-in what he wants to and what we sorely need him to – to put us back on top after only one vapid, annus horribilis that followed 9IAR, 4×3. The meeja or clickbaiters love to tell you we are a shambles; we’re in flux; a temporary clusterflux that’s being sorted as we type.

The Scottish League – and its current leaders – ain’t that great. Sevco is top because they’re decently organised. We gifted them it cos we were disorganised and had too many distracted and demotivated ‘stars’; that doesn’t take millions and millions to fix. It takes leadership to optimise what we already have and ADD what Ange says we need to bring in, to play the winning way he will demand. Yes he needs club backing for some resources, but also backing from supporters in terms of faith and patience.

There’s a danger in thinking the Celtic manager job is the biggest job in world football. It just isn’t. So attracting flash names isn’t always as easy as we’d like. Some crave a manager from Europe believing that must be the only key to winning something in Europe. Open your minds that decent football is also played all over the world now; from Sth America to the Middle East and South East Asia. If Yoko Marinos thought so parochially, they’d never have appointed a Gaigin Aussie to win them a Jap title (which they’d tried with guys that knew the J-League, yet hadn’t done for 15yrs) – some of their prev titles were won by Argies Ossi Ardiles and jorge Solari.

P67 says we need a builder to set us up with a chance to refashion how we dominate again (we’ve only not dominated locally for 1x season). Agree: We were always gonnae be in rebuild mode at the mo – with the 10 or sadly without it –

So gonnae gie the guy a chance to take us back to the success we were savouring only one shitey season away in the very recent past??

I don’t mean to sound like the guy’s PR man, but…

I just have a good bit faith and optimism that this could be good for us. For wur team’s sake – and my own sense of positivity – I really really hope so. As My Lydon put it; ‘I could be wrong…I could be RIIGGHTT…

We don’t care if we win, lose or draw (except if we lose or draw). HH

PS: Mat Ryan would be great in goal, but I don’t think he’ll be short of suitors.

At Celtic it seems a manager is appointed without any of his own staff and is required to work with those already in place.

    Is this what Barcelona do?

    Yes or no?

If no, how does Barcelona’s approach differ?

How many of his own assistants is the manager allowed to choose?

  26. ERNIE LYNCH on 12TH JUNE 2021 12:30 PM

Because they don’t just have a Manager an assistant and 1 first team coach.

They have several, made up of long term club employees who know their club principles.
