We hired a builder

When looking for a new manager, Celtic usually try to fix the biggest shortcoming the previous guy had.  In May 2019, Neil Lennon’s biggest asset was his “eye for a player”.  There were other attributes. he twice got Celtic into the Champions League group stage where he delivered some of the most memorable nights in our European history, but Celtic’s decline started with his predecessor’s inability to sign quality players after the arrival of Scott Sinclair.

When it fall apart last season, Neil seemed unable to imagine how to organise a squad that was performing significantly below the sum of its individual parts.  Apparently simple tasks, like how to organise at defensive set pieces.  The answer to that particular question was Eddie Howe.

Howe took a team of lowly £17m misfits and marshalled them into a very solid unit.  He also had other attributes, but that ability to defend a corner kick was very convincing.

I spoke to Peter Lawwell soon after Brendan Rodgers left and again after Neil Lennon’s departure.  Neither Neil nor Eddie fitted the bill he was initially looking at.  On this occasion, Ange Postecoglou fits perfectly.  Technically proficient, capable of withstanding the intensity of our game, with an ability to make us a far better team three years out than we were when he took over.

It’s that last attribute we recruited yesterday.  Neil and Brendan both left teams that were poorer than two years previous.  We hired a builder.

Very calm, very relaxed, spoke very well,

didn’t seem the excitable type which is exactly what we need right now

basically said all the right things,

wants to get to know the players and have them buy in to his way of thinking,

he could be the real deal, looking forward to life under the Ange,

  4. Anyone expecting Ange to rebuild on the pitch and off it within one season is seriously deluded.

If the club believe in him, he must be given an adequate amount of time to implement his plans and methodology.

We had a quadruple treble squad which crashed and burned last season – to expect any manager, whether, Ange, Eddie Howe, or, even Guardiola, to make an immediate impact with a depleted squad that needs rebuilding and educated in a new strategy, is crazy. Added to this of course is the fact that there will be no enormous upfront transfer ‘warchest’ – we will spend only what we raise in outgoing fees, and it could take till the end of August for some, or, all, these deals to be done.

We should, bearing in mind the quality of opposition, not even be considering a successful CL qualifying campaign – getting into the EL groups will be tough enough. I hear the shouts of “defeatism” from the usual suspects, it is not, it is REALISM in our current situation. Those who continue to carp at our new manager need a good dose of the stuff.

Next season will be tough on all fronts, not least the ongoing effect of Covid. I very much doubt any return to ‘full houses’ at any juncture.

Next season will sort out the ‘fairweather fans’ from the genuine supporters.

  5. Steven Gerrard has been appointed as Rangers manager on a four-year deal.

The former Liverpool midfielder, 37, replaces Graeme Murty, who was placed in interim charge following the October sacking of Pedro Caixinha.

Gerrard, who leaves his role as a youth coach at Anfield to take up the Rangers job this summer, captained the Reds and England.

The appointment which took 210 days since Pedro Caixnha was sacked is a gamble on an untried manager without UEFA qualifications and questions remain over his backroom staff , transfer budget and how he will cope with the pressure in the Ibrox hot seat.

….. I took a few liberties with this BBC report …. Just to make the point

Clever and informative post. It shows the level of entitlement & bitterness that is extant with some on here and in a small minority of our support.

At Ibrox we had a new club in a financial quagmire who had never won a trophy. We are only one step away from 9iar and a quadruple treble. The most important thing that kept Ibrox going through all their sh** was the total backing of their fan base….and yet there are some among us talking about boycotts & demonstrations after one bad season out of ten – almost unbelievable.

  7. Celtic legend Paul McStay gives verdict on new manager Ange Postecoglou

CELTIC legend Paul McStay was thrown his support behind the club’s new manager Ange Postecoglou – insisting that the Greek-born Australian’s drive to succeed means he’ll be a hit at Parkhead.

McStay, who made over 650 appearances for the Glasgow club during his playing career, has been based in Australia for over a decade and has witnessed the coach’s work first-hand in that time.

Postecoglou led the Socceroos to the group stages of the 2014 World Cup and was most recently manager of Japanese outfit Yokohama F Marinos, who he quit to succeed Neil Lennon as first-team manager at Celtic.

There are some supporters who are concerned that a relatively unknown coach has been handed the top job at Parkhead – but McStay insists that the new manager is a born winner who favours an attacking brand of football.

He told the club’s website: “The people I talk to in the football world here feel Ange is a top coach and it’s a move he deserves after all the success he’s had in Australia, Japan and with the national team.

“Everyone’s delighted his success has been recognised by a top club in Europe. The football community here are excited by the prospect of Ange working at Celtic and the prospect of it raising the profile of Australian football in the eyes of Europe.

“I’ve been here for 11 years now and Ange is a name aligned with quality coaching and success here and in Asia.

“What I’ve learned in my 11 years of being here and keeping an eye on the game is that he’s a winner. Wherever he goes, he seems to have that formula and structure to his teams, and the way he plays brings success.

“That comes from him being a quality coach but I think within him is a character who has that winning edge as well, which I think will be really important at Celtic.”

McStay continued: “I’ve seen what he did at Brisbane and the Australian national team. Going to Europe is taking it up a level from the point of view of the A League and the Asian footballing world.

“What he’s proved is he has that experience and expertise and the mental strength to go and win things over in Europe. It’s what he’s been waiting for – that opportunity to go and show he can do it in Europe as well.

“He has that opportunity now and whether you’re a player or a coach, sometimes you need someone to believe in you, look at what you’ve done in your career so far and give you that opportunity to move up a level.

“He has that now and when he flies to Europe he’ll not lose his coaching knowledge and expertise. It’s just a matter of taking it up and level and maybe working with better players, and he’s got the capability to do that.”

  14. Now ange has arrived he has my full support. I know people are worried about the speed that he can get the team playing as he wishes, but unlike all other challenges he has had as a manager he will able to build a team that plays against less well resources clubs every week. A team that already dominate possession and play mostly in the opposition half.

His biggest task will be pushing up the energy levels and speed of play. But there will be plenty of space in the team to add players he knows can do what he wants.

If we are in we are all in and the board need to back him
