We hired a builder

When looking for a new manager, Celtic usually try to fix the biggest shortcoming the previous guy had.  In May 2019, Neil Lennon’s biggest asset was his “eye for a player”.  There were other attributes. he twice got Celtic into the Champions League group stage where he delivered some of the most memorable nights in our European history, but Celtic’s decline started with his predecessor’s inability to sign quality players after the arrival of Scott Sinclair.

When it fall apart last season, Neil seemed unable to imagine how to organise a squad that was performing significantly below the sum of its individual parts.  Apparently simple tasks, like how to organise at defensive set pieces.  The answer to that particular question was Eddie Howe.

Howe took a team of lowly £17m misfits and marshalled them into a very solid unit.  He also had other attributes, but that ability to defend a corner kick was very convincing.

I spoke to Peter Lawwell soon after Brendan Rodgers left and again after Neil Lennon’s departure.  Neither Neil nor Eddie fitted the bill he was initially looking at.  On this occasion, Ange Postecoglou fits perfectly.  Technically proficient, capable of withstanding the intensity of our game, with an ability to make us a far better team three years out than we were when he took over.

It’s that last attribute we recruited yesterday.  Neil and Brendan both left teams that were poorer than two years previous.  We hired a builder.

Those advocating keeping Kennedy what’s this based on, the fact he’s “liked an respected” (said by those who never say a bad word about anyone ).

He should be dumped for a) he’s apparently the defensive coach, that alone is enough but b) when he was in charge he was just an extension of Lennon, no new ideas, formations, random substitute generator all too late, he was hired on sentiment and is a good guy ( which is a credit to him) but there should be no room for sentiment in sport unless your so far ahead you can afford to be, and we are not. For his benefit he should leave and learn and when he’s good enough he can come back. AP should at least get one right hand man (apologies if that offends left handlers)

The Story Of… Damien Duff’s praise of John Kennedy’s work rate

‘The Story Of’ is a web series dedicated to small but special tales from Celtic’s illustrious history. Here, ex-first team coach Damien Duff hails the work rate of a former colleague.

SPEAKING after his departure from Paradise, Damien Duff described his time at Celtic as the best of his sporting life. One man who made his time in Glasgow so memorable is assistant manager John Kennedy – whose work-rate the Irishman could not praise enough.

After moving into coaching, Duff joked about the stresses of working a 9-5 job for the first time in his career, and said any player who moves from the pitch to the dugout will face the same rude awakening. When Duff made the jump to first team coach, he said Kennedy’s idea of ‘regular hours’ was even more demanding still.

“Let me tell you, working with John Kennedy, that man would stay at Lennoxtown until 8 or 9pm at night!” Duff told the Celtic View. “I might have said I was getting used to a 9-5 when I first started coaching, but when I moved up to the first-team, I was more from 8am right through until who knows when.

“But seriously, it was amazing, and it was great to work with all of these people at the club. I do like my sleep, though, so I’ve been enjoying catching up with it at home during this down-time. The players work hard, but they don’t have a clue. When I was a player, I didn’t have a clue just how much work that goes in behind the scenes.

“I imagine when the time comes, a lot of the boys will go into coaching themselves, and they’ll all get the shock of their lives whenever they do make the switch to coaching.”

    VIDEO

Duff added: “Neil Lennon is the best gaffer in Scotland, and John Kennedy is the best assistant manager around – I’ve worked with many coaches in my life, but John is one of the best coaches in the world, without a doubt.

“It’s been amazing learning off him, and Stevie Woods as well, he’s well-respected all around the world and a world-class coach. Align that with the players. The players are the best group in the country, amazing characters, amazing talent.

Has he ever been named as defensive coach? It’s been posted on here a few times, but is that his official job?

Do football clubs even have specialist coaches, or are they just one big coaching team?

    Coaching career

After retiring as a player, Kennedy became a first-team scout for Celtic in 2010,[43] working in this capacity for the club until 2011, travelling around Europe to help find new players for the club.[44][45]

Kennedy gained coaching qualifications and worked as a coach with the club’s U19 squad in season 2011–12, and the Development Squad (reserve team) from 2012 to 2014. He led the Celtic youth team to a league an cup double in 2011–12 and 2012–13 and a third straight title in 2013–14.[46][47][48] Kennedy also oversaw the Under-19 team compete in the NextGen Series in 2011–12, a pan-European competition for youth teams.[47]

He became first-team coach in 2014 after the appointment of Ronny Deila as manager,[49][50] winning the Scottish league championship in each of Deila’s two seasons in charge, as well as the Scottish League Cup in 2014–15.[51] He continued in the role under Brendan Rodgers from 2016, and Celtic won domestic trebles in both 2016–17 and 2017–18.[52] In February 2019, Kennedy was promoted to assistant manager when Neil Lennon replaced Rodgers as manager.[53]

After the resignation of Neil Lennon in February 2021, Kennedy was appointed caretaker manager of Celtic.[54]

And a manager has his own assistants.

And part of the reason that happens is when things get tough, when the manager is under pressure, whether from fans, the board, the media, opponents or whoever, he knows there’s a couple of people with him who have his back and whose first loyalty is to him.

Now, what does it say about a club’s structure and intentions that they wouldn’t want that arrangement for their manager?

  10. SS

Cant agree.goes back to bragging how well we played when he was manager, when we played awful(think Lennon learnt this trait from GS).he also doesnt think fans know the game.no argument about his knowledge.

Aye; same anaemic blue corridors. My rudeboy pal and me were perennial loiterers round the vend machine at the foot of the stairs (few years earlier than you). Sure there was a CSC that met in the Union bar as well?

Got a vibe Ange may be looking at Ryan, Sainsbury, Irvine and Onaiwu as the new ‘spine’…

  19. why have we not announced who is not going to be the first team coaches as we did with howe would not be the manager.

“Nothing’s been said so the concern has to be that he’s coming in on his own.

Which would not be a good thing, and any Celtic fan who says otherwise is a liar or a fool.”

    —————————

At the risk of being placed in either of your two extreme categories, I will have a go at this.

There are two desireable criteria i.e.

    1) Have continuity in your backroom staff so you are not suffering complete overhauls with every managerial change

& 2) Allowing the New Manager to have 1 or 2 previously trusted lieutenants to give them a comfort blanket and a secure inner circle

In clubs like Barcelona and Liverpool, with the finances to meet both competing aims, they can employ a large enough staff to provide for both.

We, at Celtic have not always done so and , as far as I can see Ange Postecoglou has not always relied on this either. When Wim and Dr. Jo came, they did not bring their own staff with them. One was a success but left because he was conflicted with one of his backroom impositions and the other was unsuccessful but made no comment on issues with backroom. John Barnes had Kenny and Terry Mac but still failed. Ronny Deila had no one but a fitness instructor and it was the squad that rebelled against that. In modern times MON and WGS and NFL (first time around) brought trusted backroom staff But Tommy Burns brought no Killie coach with him and Billy McNeill (2nd time around) inherited Tommy Craig from Davie Hay.

I acknowledge a modern trend emerging but I see no relationship between size of the new entourage (or the size of the departure of previous coaches) and the success of the appointments. Mowbray, Macari, Brady and Barnes brought incomers with them. Deila and Wim did not.

I also looked at AP with Yokohama and the Oz names I see did not appear to be guys who worked with him regularly or at all before. It is obviously important that a coach without the ative language needs this security more than most but it does beg the question. Does AP HAVE a trusted backroom that he wants to bring with him? Has he brought coaches with him to more than one of his coaching jobs?

And we also have to consider the possibility that he has researched the existing coaching staff and WANTS continuity, at least at the start of his reign. If he suspects, these continuity guys as not being part of his “buy in” or guys who he can trust, then he may have been promised the option of bringing his own in in future.

In short, it is Ange’s views on these matters that should count, not the desire of our fans to “get rid” of those we perceived had failed (they didn’t BTW) or the Board’s desire to have total control. Continuity is a helpful idea but not at the expense of leaving a Coach feeling untrusted.

And there’s a whole range of positions between lying and foolishness available to determine the metrics in this equation
