When and how football lockdown lifts

334

I had a conversation yesterday about what the world will be like when lockdown is lifted.  We agreed it will not be lifted all at once.  Small private gatherings will be permitted first, then restaurants, cinemas and eventually bars.  The last thing to be released from lockdown will be football stadiums.

When you consider how football fans shout, sing and embrace, normal attendance at games will not be possible while the virus exists and large parts of the population remain in mortal danger.  Thousands of spectators cross-contaminating will not be allowed to happen until the virus is eradicated or a vaccine is distributed.  This could take years.

Around 90% of the football industry across Europe may go out of business before selling another match ticket.  Scotland would be left with Celtic and the community clubs, who can furlough every member of staff, get a grant for the rates and rent out their pitch to youth teams to pay insurance and utility bills.

This is just one small unthinkable thing in a seemingly imperious industry that is very thinkable in 2020.  Similar consequences will be replicated in other industries across the world.  If football wants to survive, it has to get innovative very quickly.

Facemasks, visors, gloves, a shedload of new rules on behaviour permitted at a football ground, alcohol gel dispensers everywhere and cashless kiosks are all things clubs should be planning for.  It would be a mistake to assume the game we are familiar with will return at any point in the next year.  Your football stadium experience will either be very different, or it will not happen for a long time.

  1. Having read the full statement from the beaks is that the only reason the SPFL outcome has not been put forward for a vote is down to UEFA. It is my understanding UEFA wish to consult respective Associations then make a decision as to how the respective top tier leagues will be concluded. T.V. revenue, sponsorship and quite possibly how quickly the EPL, German, Spanish and Italian top tiers in my opinion will drive this. With reference to the aforementioned countries they are in the main those countries who have the pull i.e. big clubs versus wee clubs scenario. If the aforementioned countries cannot conclude their respective leagues UEFA will for the sake of the new season, when ever that starts will rule that current standings should be final. This decision will be determined by who the countries are, for T.V. and sponsorship reasons.

The SPFL dare not make a decision without UEFA despite the so called threat of legal action by Sevco, Jambos et al.

In my opinion we should now stand up for the Champions and look forward to 10.

This is a quote from the chairman of the group of researchers responsible for modelling the epidemic in the UK:

“At the moment we don’t know what’s going to happen in six months. All we know is that unless we stop transmission now, the health service will collapse. Yep, that’s the only thing we know for sure.”

It’s taken from a very worthwhile read that tracks the UK response to the crisis from the earliest days. You can read it here: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-britain-path-speci-idUSKBN21P1VF

It doesn’t though explain when the SPFL will finish or indeed, restart.

Re SPFL statement – hopefully this means the SPFL can toss some prize money to the smaller clubs nice and early.

Won’t be a solution but can, hopefully, help them plan ahead a little.

How to you get someone on a cocktail of drugs and alcohol to wear a face mask and visor, sterilise their hands and most importantly, respect others?

    Club Statement

    by Rangers Football Club

    Wednesday, 08 April 2020, 16:00

CONSIDERING the current circumstances and increased speculation surrounding the ongoing impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on Scottish football, we felt it is incumbent that we provide clarity in relation to our position.

For the avoidance of doubt, Rangers firmly believe that the 2019/20 season is only complete when all 38 games have been played to a finish.

Nevertheless, we are conscious of the ongoing financial hardships faced by many clubs within the Scottish game. No business is immune from the impact of Coronavirus and we were proud of our players and senior staff’s voluntary decision to defer their wages to ensure job security for their colleagues at Ibrox. Furthermore, many clubs urgently require financial support to maintain cash flow and allow them to survive this current impasse so they can return to normal business when the current government lockdown is relaxed. It is important to recognise that these clubs across all the leagues are now in a financially precarious situation.

As a club, Rangers will immediately propose a member’s resolution which would release prize money to be distributed to all clubs throughout Scotland urgently. We believe that this is the priority in the present circumstances. It is vital to show respect for all clubs across the Scottish game, regardless of league position or financial standing. We must work together with a unity of purpose for the betterment of the Scottish game.

We are also acutely aware of other issues which are less pressing but, are forming key parts of the football narrative in Scotland. Nothing is more important than protecting the future of every club in Scotland as we are cognisant that this has a direct impact upon people’s livelihoods. It is abhorrent that certain clubs could be unfairly relegated if the current SPFL proposals were implemented. We must future proof the Scottish game.

Any restructure of the SPFL or other solutions to the current impasse must be afforded time to scrutinise in detail and consider all options. The consequences of forcing through change without due care and attention will have severe consequences for the Scottish game.

Scottish football must work together for the common good of every club, their staff and supporters. Any attempts to railroad changes to existing rules or run roughshod over corporate governance will be opposed in the strongest possible terms. We must allow decisions to be made in a rational, fair and balanced manner.

In the meantime, we expect clubs to support our member’s resolution which will provide financial support to those who need it most

  12. Bada Bing,

Celtic should agree with the prize money proposal,

as long as all clubs are given an equals share,

the huns would end up owing money.

  13. So they wont accept Celtic winning the league after 30 games, Celtic should reject their proposal until that is removed.

The daily figures reported in the UK by DHSC are no longer reliable because the system is swamped and the course of the virus is moving more quickly than the reporting system can cope with.

It’s taking about 4 days to get test results published, so today’s case numbers relate to tests taken on new presentations over the weekend.

Similarly, deaths reported daily by DHSC are about 4-5 days behind for assorted reasons including data protection, and exclude those who died outside of hospital – for example those at home or in care homes.

The data is reconciled once a week by ONS and NRS in Scotland from details on death certificates filed, where we can start to see the extent of the problem.

As a general observation from the ONS/NRS data, the daily deaths reported represent about 60% of the actual deaths that day, although this in NOT a hard and fast rule.

For example, on Sunday Scot Gov announced total deaths had increased to 220 in the previous 24 hours. The NRS data reported the actual number to be 355.

Similarly in England, where ONS data shows a similar under-reporting by NHS England.

The sad news that deaths in hospitals in the UK increased by 936 in the past 24 hours really reflects a harsher reality of perhaps 1500 poor souls passing away over the weekend in hospitals or elsewhere.

We can expect a peak in the number of fatalities this week as the effect of lockdown in reducing infections starts to influence the number of those dying, but we won’t see it in the figures until later next week.

The major issue with this is not really about what the public knows, or what the news outlets report, it’s the reliability of the data used by government to make critically important decisions on what actions to take.

One hopes and prays that the data they use is much closer to real time.

  17. Sevco’s latest statement is shameless. Take the prize money but void the season is breathtaking in its stupidity and cynicism.

Prize money can only be issued on the basis of final league standings.

Must say, if I was looking for advice on how to arrive at “rational, fair and balanced” decisions, just about the last place I would look to right now would be the White House.

If that failed, I suppose I’d have to go to Ibrox.

CHINESE journalists have shed light on their country’s deadly coronavirus cover-up which has led to tens of thousands of deaths and sent global economies crashing to a halt.

Sky News Australia presents COVID-19: Ground Zero – an investigation into what caused the killer coronavirus and how China managed to bury the truth for so long.

South China Morning Post news editor Josephine Ma told Sky News her government covered up more than 200 cases of coronavirus in 2019, delaying global warnings and allowing the spread of the virus to leak into other countries.

Ground Zero also details the incredible steps nations around the world are taking to minimise the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
