When media collaborate with power you have problems

1190

A journalist, banned by Celtic, attacked the club in the Daily Record today, suggesting the SFA chief exec Stuart Regan should have told Peter Lawwell to ‘wind his neck in’ and ‘remind him of his duty to the game’ after he wrote asking for clarification after Sunday’s game.

The hyperbole was raised to the extent the notion “Lawwell dragged our game back into a very dark place – somewhere dangerously close to disrepute” was put into hundreds of thousands of hands today.

A dark place, close to disrepute?  For writing a letter asking for clarification? Sounds to me like the know the trouble Peter Lawwell is causing to the vested interests at Hampden and they want him stopped.

By remarkable coincidence, this happens to be the same journo who wrote the puff piece for SFA president, Campbell ‘What school did you go to?’ Ogilvie for writing to Uefa demanding a referee was demoted (while circumventing due process) and asking for a player to be banned.

No mention of winding a neck in or duty to the game for a vastly farther reaching letter.

The same paper gives a platform to Barry ‘EBT’ Ferguson to level wholly inaccurate accusations against Celtic:

“By questioning the reasoning behind [the failure to award a penalty]in the name of their supporters, they were nodding towards all manner of hoary old conspiracy theories.”

Conspiracy you say, Barry?  Who mentioned conspiracy?  An explanation that the standard of refereeing is not good enough and that having 6 officials at Hampden hindered good decision making didn’t occur to you?

Some people are quick to deny conspiracies when a far less controversial response is available.

A concerted campaign has run for days now to ensure that Celtic cannot ask questions without being demonised.  When the media demonise those who question authority we are in a very dark place indeed.

This is intolerable.  It would not happen in England, where the breadth of media is wide enough to escape narrow seams of authority.  It doesn’t matter if it is the government, the Church, the police, big business or sport, if media collaborate with power, you have problems.

Some of it comes from people perhaps bitter that Celtic called them out and banned them, some from those unable to find perspective or consistency between writing about a Campbell Ogilvie letter and a Peter Lawwell letter.  All of them are time-served opinion formers who make money from Celtic’s actions.

We are the last superpower in the game, survivors in the battle of the ages.  This antagonism isn’t going away.  Not until their grandchildren are in place, anyway.

Clubs need to write letters when improvement is needed.  I hear estimates that income to Celtic from winning the Scottish Cup would have been in the region of £1m.  Football is big business and processes and resources need to as good as they possibly can be. If they are not, the very least you can do is ask for improvement.

On Meekings appeal yesterday….

The player’s appeal was right to be upheld, the case should never have been put before the SFA panel in the first place.  The referee Steven McLean saw the incident.  That was not disputed.  He asked his assistant for his opinion.  That was not disputed either.

Meekings representatives pointed out at the hearing that officials are not allowed to re-referee a game after watching TV.  This is a central tenant of the game and was accepted by the judicial panel.

Retrospective action is only allowed for incidents which referees did not see.  It is not permitted for referees to reconsider an incident he saw.  It is blindingly embarrassing to our game that the SFA didn’t know the rules well enough before taking this action.  I hear there was incredulity at Celtic when they heard Meekings was banned in the first place.

…… and you wonder why Celtic write letters.

Last call for the Ben Nevis Huddle……..

The cup semi final scandal has left a shadow much less significant than Celtic’s right to question authority. SMSM stepped up the anti Celtic mantra from the moment Rangers died, and were tuped to Sevco. The SFA is in turmoil because they’re cheating so much to help keep Sevco alive on a daily basis, while SMSM have nothing to write about except rivalry, that they know no longer exists or can be ever be recreated on level terms.

Celtic are under attack because Rangers died.

I don’t have a problem with the case against Meekings being dismissed. It should never have been brought in the first place. The time to punish him was on Sunday.

The Compliance Officer is bringing far too many cases in for review, many of which-like this one-do not fall under his original remit. No other country in the world has tried to suspend a player for a handball which went unpunished by the referee.

Of course,to find a way to dismiss the case once brought, the SFA once again had to tie themselves in knots. The guilty men here are all SFA employees,be they the committee men who brought and dismissed the case,or the various referees who made the original call on Sunday.

What we need to do now is to focus our efforts on them. Not Meekings. Not his fault he got away with it. I’m at a loss as to how we root out a culture which is so entrenched, but the SFA stables need to be cleansed.

Question is,how do we deal with this?

MacLean was scheduled for the League Cup semi, and taken out of the picture due to a prior commitment when the club raised concerns about his Rangers connections.

The authorities for once agreed, and took him off the list.

In which case, bearing in mind the clear rivalry and animosity between Celtic and Rangers, why was he allowed to referee such an important game involving Celtic?

If I had the opportunity to referee Rangers against a bounce eleven,I know who would win. MacLean did the same.

  12. Talking of conspiracy theories, anyone remember sir cardigan compaining about not getting a decision his way by a referee with an Irish sounding last name? Can’t quite remember the brew ha ha that caused in the media. Another rug please, more sweeping to be done.

  13. Hi. The referee did not see the incident. The incident being a deliberate (insofar as we deliberate over instincts) handball denying a goal. He may have been looking at the general scene but he didn’t see the incident. The compliance officer has no choice but to cite Meekings. It is not a case of re-refereeing the incident, he didn’t referee it in the first place. He didn’t see it.

  14. Paul67 et al

    Paul you may have an advantage on me re this ongoing story. I have not seen the referee’s report from Sunday. Neither have I seen a referee’s supervisory report. Nor have I heard from Steven McLean or Alan Muir. Nor have I read any detail from the Judicial panel’s decision re Josh Meekings other than that which is on official SFA website which reads;

“Notice of Complaint dismissed and no suspension applied.”

  18. the long wait is over on

Two of the most vociferous critics of Celtic in the last few days have been Barry Ferguson and John Brown.

It’s scarcely credible that anyone would give credence to opinions expressed by two such idiots.

The problem is pretty simple – the MSM journalists and the majority of the columnists, particularly in the red tops, are either thick or , worse , think we are.

What they write panders to their ever decreasing market of the gullible.

Anyone with half a brain abandoned them years ago.

They are finished in any meaningful sense.

  19. This reaction from the SFA and MSM is the typical response from those without the mechanism to admit mistakes and atone for them, it’s also the same when organisations have too much to lose, like credibility (Ha). They are supposed to be an authority, the clue is in the name SFA, over the years they have shown themselves to be anything but. As for the fourth estate, I think they should all be put down like a rabid dog. They have as much credibility as a wall street banker/ politician/ *******

  22. Paul, the media always collaborate with power. We have an incredible concentration of media ownership in the UK and that has a terrible impact on democracy IMO. For the independence referendum the score was 36 newspapers to 1 in favour of the Union – in a country that ended up with a 45/55% split. They create opinion…and they are responsible for the high profile of UKIP.

    Eh?….when were Celtic….at ’em?

Celtic…today…take fans money…then…sit-back and let the Internet-Bampots at ’em.

Even Fergus, sat on the ‘can of worms’ till his last days of office…before taking-out Farry, coz…if he did it earlier…it might have effected his going-away-Celtic-fans-wonga…so, even what some look upon as…the ‘mightiest’ figures on our history…had a price or, were in it for the money…Celtic came way down the list of priorities.

In my life-time…the only time that I’ve seen Celtic going at ’em…was on the pitch….during the 1980 Hampden Riot…no punches pulled by the ‘real’ Tims.

    Anyway…Hail Hail fella…take care.

  28. Nothing will happen unless we make it happen.

Celtic’s letter to the SFA was welcome but did not go far enough. There has been a long litany of “honest mistakes” in crucial games. We have had enough.

Its hard for them to cheat us out of a League, not impossible but difficult. Its manifestly easier in a one off Cup game.

Solution, Celtic say they are unhappy at this the latest in a series of clear cut “bad calls” against the Club. We are not looking for any favours but simple fair play. To highlight our frustration we will not enter a team in next year’s Scottish Cup.

Any revenue loss to the Club can be made up by using free date to organise high profile friendlies. I believe this type of action would galvanise our support and the crowds would flock back to Celtic Park, to support a Club that’s willing to fight for them.
