Where is this relationship going?

340

Signing young players on loan has worked well for Celtic in the recent past: Patrick Roberts and Odsonne Edouard, being good examples.  While others, like Charly Musonda, failed to make the grade.  Musonda had talent (you remember that chip against Zenit), but he never looked up to the physical challenges of the professional game.

When Celtic sign the likes of Timothy Weah on a short-term loan, our initial thought is, “Where is this relationship going?”  Will the loan be extended, as it was for Roberts, or end in a purchase, as it did for Edouard, or will this be a one-off gig?

Weah appears to have abundant talent but his chances of breakthrough at PSG are limited.  Mbappe, Neymar and Cavani head an illustrious list of strikers at a club always looking to add to their squad.  It is more likely that the Paris club will look to build Weah’s value at Celtic in the hope of earning an inflated transfer fee.  This practice is how all tier-one clubs operate and underpins their Financial Fair Play credentials.

It is important for Celtic to build a squad – to manage our assets.  The try before you buy model, used effectively with Edouard, works well in this regard.  Building relationships with PSG or Man City, who know their players can gain necessary experience and appreciate in value, means we remain a valuable option for future deals.

But we also need to win football games, irrespective of more strategic concerns, even if there is no long-term relationship with the player.  Sometimes it is OK for a relationship not to last beyond the summer.

Welcome to Celtic, Timothy.

Who negotiated the sell on deals for Dembele , Van Dyke , Wanyama which have so beautifully inflated our coffers ?

Who negotiated the financial deal for the arrival of Brendan ? You think Dermo ?

WTF has negotiating deals got to do with anything, he never scouted them, nor did he scout the manager, the real work was done by others, all Pedro did was give them a contract, Neil McGuinness scouted VvD and Vic for a start and John Park took the credit, it’s the reason he left.

Talking about contracts, see all the deadwood we can’t get shot of, all given contracts that pay them far too much hence they are draining money out of the cub for breathing, not great management, and it all falls on the head of the one who dishes out the contracts.

Macjay… if you mean Erik Sviatchenko, he did initially go out on loan to Mtdjidtland (sp?), but I think they made his loan permanent at the end of last season, so we have no right to recall him.

The contracts PL negotiated have proved to be a cash cow for us .

    Credit where it is due.

Do you seriously suggest he chose or scouted the deadwood ?

    Never his area of responsibility.

Dembele ,like many others, is a player that I got wrong.

I actually think that Burke might be moulded into a decent fullback.

In a similar way that MON developed Didier Agathe.

My comparison to a rugby player was a very personal one.

When I played youth football ,I had a team mate who was an excellent sprinter, long jumper ,and long distance runner.

He was a Fife champion at High school.

He represented our school at Rugby for Fife and Scotland.

From time to time he played in our first 11 at Football.

Physically he was a man at 14.

He ran riot when he played football .

He steamrolled through opponents ,like a wild Buffalo.

He was so strong, fast ,and powerful.

    A real athlete.

    BUT.

He had a poor first touch. He didn’t have any football intelligence or skill.

He would frequently knock the ball to far in front of himself, run it out the park, run into cul de sacs.

He couldn’t shoot or pass ,and didn’t lift his head.

On my first sight of Burke ,he reminded me of Carruthers,The Rugby playing sprinter.

You are deliberately missing the point, the players were already scouted and obviously intended coming to the club, they were given decent contracts, as were all the ones we can’t move on, if you are hell bent on giving him credit for stuff that is feck all to do with him, carry on, it’s pointless talking to a closed mind.

I will give him credit where and when it’s due, but no way will I give him credit when others are due it.

The fact that the likes of VvD turned out to be a class player is nothing to do with Pedro or any contract he was given, to think it is is the sort of things that huns believe :-)

Paulo Maldini was strolling it at 39. Wayne Rooney was finished at 31. Age is relative to the individual.

I would not be delighted with two players who haven’t kicked ball for a period of time and who’s Clubs are taking serious financial hits to shove them out of the door.

    *aye but only by hunterlopers:

Lubo was still a legend in France and was actually heading for the Bundesliga and went tae the Dr for advice when he suggested he come tae us.

Henrik, who had scored in the ’94 3rd place WC game was the ultimate professiona,l he had won 2 KNVB Cups with Feyenoord, 4 titles 2 SC and 2 LC as well as UEFA Cup runner up with us, 2 La Ligas, 1 Supercona and then the Big Cup with Barca, the Svenska Cupen with Helsingborg.

sir furious had nothing tae lose when giving him a short term contract, in fact he wanted tae keep him as our wee talisman helped manure secure the title but loyalty meant a lot tae this wee mhan unlike effers who tuped and then are welcomed back with open red hands.
