Where we are and the way forward

734

Celtic are well behind the position they should be at this stage of the football cycle which started in the summer of 2014.  This week’s two defeats are a symptom of that.  A year ago, then-new signings Armstrong and Mackay-Stevens contributed to two highly credible performances against Inter Milan, which indicated we were on a positive trajectory, but pretty much every available indication since has pointed south.

Aberdeen were poor in the first half last night, but shortly before their opening goal om 31 minutes I noted that they were defending comfortably, despite our dominance.  We had not made a chance which tested them.  We often need a lot of possession before the goals flow.

There is a flip side to that ratio.  We often lose a lot of goals compared to the possession we allow opponents.  All teams take a direct approach to attacking Celtic – get it forward and shoot. Better still, win a corner.  Football games are about two things: scoring goals and not conceding goals.  Some work is being done on the former but I’m concerned our shape does not accommodate the achievement of the latter.

We’ve kept 4 clean sheets (Kilmarnock, St Johnstone, Partick, Stranraer ) in the 18 games since beating Dundee United 5-0 in October.  Only Thistle (1-0), Dundee (6-0) and Dundee United (5-0) have lost at Celtic Park without scoring since…………… Ross County on 1 August.

Records will show that yet again we lost a crucial goal at a corner kick.  What will be lost in time is the sheer panic caused by the Aberdeen corners which didn’t result in a goal.  I’ve never seen a team defend set pieces so poorly over such an extended period.

There could be many reasons why we’re not in the Champions League knock out stages right now, but I’m sure the reasons we’re not comfortably ahead in the league is that defensively, our shape and organisation is not good enough.  We concede too much space in dangerous areas.  This is why we’re not miles ahead of a team with vastly weaker resources.

On the way forward:

It’s of the upmost importance we win the league.  As it stands, we will achieve this.  Colin Kazim-Richards, despite being of journeyman-pro stock, gave us a dimension we’ve not had in 18 months.  He, Kris Commons, Ryan Christie, Patrick Roberts and Erik Sviatchenko will all have a positive impact on the remainder of the season.

Ronny has got a lot wrong, but he was right about one thing after the game last night, “The players need the fans’ support”.  Those who suggest that anytime is a good time for recriminations probably don’t have a good grasp on the complexities of any given situation.  There will be plenty of time for recrimination in June, right now, we need to keep our eye on the prize.

Win the league, then we’ll talk.

Nice 23 deg evening in Sydney. Heading into city to meet Michael Collins for a few. He gave up on Cqn a while ago due to the Lawell spin

Fans at home have to decide what to do. Sit back do nothing. Fail CL again. No golden nuggets to hide deficiencies

Or take action. To be honest was really hoping that paul 67 would lead the way

  4. Ronny saying he will resign if he fails to win the league – is a bit like all of us once in a while saying “oh please God, if you stop this happening, I will say my prayers every night and go to mass twice on Sunday”

He looked a haunted and nervous man during his interview with BBC’s McLaughlin – if we can see it in a five minute clip, what on earth are the players seeing, day in and day out.

I am convinced he will be on the way back to Norway, just as soon as the EK game is out of the way – no point in exposing the new man (or woman..cough cough!) to an unecessary ‘banana skin’ in his/her, first match.

Doing nothing and hoping things work out is NOT an option.

  6. Just supposing, for the benefit of the Peter Pan Brigade (Bhoys who never grew up) that Peter Lawwell was paid on a commision only basis – say conservatively 15% of income generated, i.e. all commercial income including, Kit Sponsorship Deals – e.g. Magners & New Balance – Catering Deals – Celtic Merchandise….etc etc

It’s my guess he would be “trousering”, to use the PPB vernacular, probably three/four times his current salary.

  7. I see The Huddleboard site has been reported in both the Evening Times and Glasgow Herald as posting messages in support of “getting the IRA in to deal with Deila”.

Both newspapers(sic) have printed this allegation in a po-faced, serious, “won’t somebody think about the poor children?” manner. Anyone who knows this Celtic site will know that these are spoof joke comments (however much bad taste they contain)

We truly get the media we deserve.

  8. Big Peat of Islay on

Deila, through the media, is making the point to the PLC that he might go on gardening leave but he won’t go without his suitcase full of cash.

  9. I agree, and always have, with what Chris Sutton has said this morning and has been saying recently – with one caveat.

Of course the board has ultimate respo sibility in the matter, however it would have been perceived as extremely harsh to sack a manager with a realistic chance of winning all domestic honours.

But, as I said earlier today, I believe that the axe will fall over the weekend, with the Stock Exchange being informed on Monday.

I too, feel for Ronny, but the job came too soon and is too big for him. I don’t over-criticize the original appointment – it could have worked, unfortunately it hasn’t.

So what would you pay the CEO of a £60/70 million turnover company – a CEO who negotiates and brings in around £30 million per year in commercial revenue?

If you think he is getting too much, you must know what the correct figure is – perhaps you could enlighten all the other members of the Peter Pan Brigade (the Bhoys who never grew up)

  11. Mr Pastry

The figures are in front of you in that link.

As for salary, about £200K would be the norm in the real world, I have a friend who is a CEO of a £1.6 billion turnover business and he gets £285K + £300K give or take a few grand bonus.

Good Morning Bhoys from a very damp Central Scotland. On the subject of Ronny my only concern is that he may have lost his confidencce and if that is the case that will transfer to the players.I think he deserves at least to the end of this season when the situation can be assessed I think Chris Sutton is talking nonsense but he is not the only ex Celt who is doing that. H.H.

Well if I’ve read this correctly the median total remuneration for the CEOs of FTSE 250 companies is about £1.5m.

That suggests to me that Peter Lawwell is well paid, and possibly paid well over the market rate for what is by comparison a rather small business.

The issue for me though isn’t really his pay, it’s more the disproportionately large role he has within the Club, which of course is a consequence of having an absentee owner.

  14. I think Ronny should get to the end of the season before any decision is made. He has his failings, but he is an excellent coach, for example; Tierney and Griffiths’ progress and we shouldn’t throw out the baby with the bath water.

By the way, if he does go at the end of the season, and wins the league, who in their right mind would take up the job.

Ronnys statement saying he will resign at the end of the season if we dont win the SPL could be something that has been discussed and agreed by P.L.However I dont think he will have to do that as I am confident we will win the title. H.H.

You are badly wrong and you obviously don’t know what the job of running Celtic actually involves – however for the sake of argument lets say you’re right – so take your £400k from circa £900k that is paid to Lawwell – are you saying that £500k, or 0.75% of turnover will dramatically change the economics at Celtic – I assume you will say no – and if so, then you and others in the PPB really are just jealous of PL and want rid of him at any cost – his salary is just a convenient excuse.

We are lucky to have had a man such as Peter at the helm for years and, in the words of Otis Redding “you don’t miss your water till the well runs dry”

Whit about obsessing about politics ?

    ###

Well for most people football is something you take with you from childhood to adulthood. Politics is normally something people first take an interest in when they approach adulthood (though all too many remain a bit adolescent about it, as recent events have shown), so I would differentiate between football and politics in that regard.

There are of course worse things in life than having Peter Pan issues, so my remark was a comment rather than a criticism.

  18. Leigh Griffiths said on Sportscene that, it wisny Ronny who had improved him……it was, Johnny Collins.

I say….get Ronny oot, give the keys of the dugout to Collins.

Do you think that, Kris Commons fat erse would have been seen anywhere near Celtic Park if, Collins was manager at the time of his Molde dummy-spitting session ?

P.S. I think that, Lawwell dizny want Collins in charge coz….Collins has cojones.

You say I am badly wrong, please point out where I am wrong.

I know fine well what he does at the club, I ran my own business for well over 25 years and know what it entails.

Jealous of Pedro, no chance, I have a good life, been retired for over ten years, just turned 61, what have I to be jealous of him for.

Peter Lawwell is the Managing Director – Commercial Director rolled into one – his basic salary is under £600k – I ask again, what difference would a few hundred thousand have on the overall economic situation at Celtic.

It’s all driven by jealousy – and btw, half his salary goes straight to tax which helps pay for things we all need and use.
