Why Ange had to play Kyogo

483

For you and me, it was a dead rubber, an opportunity to watch Celtic without the pressure of winning or losing.  For the players and coaches, not so much.  The entirely-changed 11 who took the field played like they wanted to make an impact, as did an almost-as-changed Real Betis side.

The game was competitive, the nine added minutes at the end of the second half passed excruciatingly slowly; by that stage of the evening, no one’s head was in dead rubber territory.

When Albian Ajeti pulled up lame in the first half, Ange Postecoglou had plenty to ponder.  At that moment, he was left with only one fit striker, Kyogo Furuhashi, the most valuable asset in Scottish football, who was resting on the bench.

Of course Kyogo came on.  Ange did not set his team out to pull their punches, he wanted and got a performance.  He gave fringe players their opportunity.  Would it have been right for him to pull his own punches, 30 minutes into the game, by leaving his only striker on the bench?  If he expects the players to commit, he has to commit and play the game competitively.

Management is so subtle.  Selecting the right players and tactics is not nearly enough.  If you want players to follow you, you have to live the role.  Ange knew this when he told Kyogo to get stripped.

So what did we learn?  James McCarthy looks more than comfortable in a Celtic shirt every time I see him.  The player he was is slowly emerging.  Liam Scales can feel aggrieved he has not had a sniff of proper action before this week.  Stephen Welsh continues to grow into the role of Celtic central defender, a year after breaking into the team.

We finished third in a group against the third placed teams in Germany and Spain.  Collecting six points from Ferencvaros was an objective delivered, although so much more could have been achieved as we allowed comfortable positions slip in Spain and Germany.

If you are old enough, you will remember being told Celtic win trophies when they first emerge.  Perhaps the Europa Conference League will have its compensations.

Motherwell on Sunday afternoon is anything but a dead rubber.  The Celtic FC Foundation Bucket Collection returns for the first time in two years, those in need remain numerous.  The work of the Foundation does is remarkable and literally life changing at this time of year.  It is our greatest boast.

The context I was referring to was in relation to the language used, not the sentiment expressed.

WT resorted to obscenities because his complaints about your own use of obscenities had gone unheeded.

Personally I’m not offended by the language, but it gets tiresome and loses effect through endless repetition.

I need hardly remind you of Trotsky’s view on the issue, ‘Abusive language and swearing are a legacy of slavery, humiliation, and disrespect for human dignity—one’s own and that of other people.’

On another point, you’re saying that those who tried to impede the lifeboat crew were fishermen. Are you sure about that? I know they used fish guts to attract gulls to hinder the lifeboat being launched but that isn’t proof they were fishermen.

Fascism is evil, of that there is no doubt. But the casual usage of the term as an insult devalues its true meaning. There is no doubt you are a clever, well intentioned guy. But to refresh your memory on Fascism.

Fascism originally hails from Italy.. Mussolini founded the National Fascist party. He went on to describe Fascism as a movement that would strike against the “backwardness of the right and destructiveness of the left.”.

As you are aware it thrives on totalitarian one party rule and rejects democracy.

Ii don’t see anyone on here campaigning for that agenda.

Difficult to see hte relevance in Ian McGichrist’s views to sport (or to the wee jibe that I am some sort of mix of Logical Positivism and Behaviourism- I oppose all closed thinking.

McGilchrist takes his examples from music and creativity (and you may as well admit you know nothing of my prowess or weaknessin that field) but not from sport.

Outside of Strictly, Ice Dancing, Gymnastics and Diving, there are no points or medals for artistic merit. That does not make artistic merit a worthless endeavour but it does not add or detract from the scoreboard in any competitive sport.

There is no hiding place in Sport- you either win lose or draw, and the latter is just a deferral to see if you will win or lose later. You cannot award yourself extra points or goals for being more stylish or elegant or inventive. These concepts are only useful in the execution of moves leading to goals and points.

So, Left Brain, Right Brain, or Whole Brain, it’s a No Brainer as to whether this affects the odds of a successfl Qualifying or Cup CAMPAIGN as opposed to any single match or tie.

  11. Rennes release statement as match against Tottenham Hotspur will not be played

UEFA have today released a statement regarding the Conference League group stage match between Rennes and Tottenham Hotspur, after the fixture could not be played on Thursday night when the Premier League side announced its intention not to play following a Covid-19 outbreak in the squad.

The governing body has now confirmed that the match will not be played at a later date, despite efforts between UEFA and the two clubs to find a solution. As a result, the matter will be taken to its disciplinary commission.

Rennes have released a statement taking note of the decision. The club had also stated on Thursday night that the London side had shown a lack of “fair play” in the way it acted. Spurs had initially told their opponents the game would go ahead before going back on their decision in the evening, after Rennes had touched down in London.

L’Équipe report that the Premier League side could lose the match by forfeit, with Rennes – who are already guaranteed first place in the group – being awarded the 3-0 win. As brought up by Rennes in their initial statement, the UEFA regulation states that this is the sanction when a club pulls out of a match due to Covid-19 outbreaks.

Yes, he uses music as an example but the principles are the same for any creative process in life and indeed any “conscious” awareness.

The link was neither to support my argument nor down your argument.

Using Dr McGilchrist’s formidable thinking to such purposes is using a a sledgehammer to crack a quark.

For me being an engineer we tend like the vast majority of western civilisation to be very left brain oriented.

For me it’s not a good thing and I’m in the process of “re-thinking” but old habits die hard.

I thought you may have found it interesting in the background of our various debates – remember you frowning at my holistic propositions:))

    Still, maybe you’ll consider this…

… ‘It’ is like a stream, with its whirlpools and eddies, that come into being for a time, and resolve; while they are there they are present to all observers, even measurable up to a point; and yet, while distinct, they are inseparable from the stream, not just in the sense that without the stream they do not exist, but in the sense that they are the stream.

We are just such eddies in the stream. And creativity is always discovery of the self as well as of the other.[4] Once one sees this, the objectivising, time-denying, change-denying, diagrammatic mentality of modern Western thinking appears as I believe it is: a hindrance, not a help, on the path to truth.

“Once one sees this” … is key here.

    Statistics are objectivising

And it was interesting that you state that winning a qualifying round does not change the odds.

    Is that “change denying”?

You have still to show why you have chosen the odds you have and they seem to be random.

Yet if we put that to one side and go along with your premise that the odds on a first round win is say 80/20.

You then use this and the odds of the other rounds to extrapolate the overall odds – 50/50, (although of course you don’t show your workings.)

But consider this. Once the first round is played and Celtic advance the odds of the first round whether they were 80/20, 100/1 or 1/100 are irrelevant.

The game is won and the outcome is known, therefore by the certainty of that outcome, rather than the projected probability, the odds are changed.

    Why do you deny this?

Maybe we can leave it there but Iain McGilchrist shows a much bigger picture and maybe we can learn something from his left Brain, right Brain hypothesis.

Have a good one Celts – and all you other ghuys also;))

It’s also criminal so it’s disappointing that plod didn’t take a more assertive role.

On a positive note it seems that donations to the RNLI have increased dramatically since they’ve faced criticism for doing what they do.

“I remember you frowning at my holistic propositions:)) “

Not so much the propositions but the adjective holistic. I find it a boastful word used by advertisers to put a gloss on a product and rarely justified. It should refer to something thet addresses Humane, Aesthetic, Religious, Scientific, Pjhilosphical and Political values, and more, in one unified package.

Comprehensive is a less loaded word though very few analyses achieve even that aim. I have never seen a claimed Holistic analysis or proposition live up to its title. I am happy if people manage pretty thorough.

You then use this and the odds of the other rounds to extrapolate the overall odds – 50/50, (although of course you don’t show your workings.)

I recall that TBB showed his working so I didn’t bother. Try this linked site, and remember my prokections of 80:20 or 70:30 was purely illustrative, but htey do not affect the principle ie.e that the odds on cumulative events shorten , whether they are independent or dependent, it is just the leveraging of the odds that are affected. And a final projection of 50:50 was informed guesswork too- I think TBB showed it was less than 50:50, but that is from my unreliable memory. The point is not that we are not favourites to qualify from 4 ties but that our odds are longer than they look if you look on each tie independently

    https://www.statisticshowto.com/probability-and-statistics/probability-main-index/how-to-find-the-probability-of-two-events-occurring-together/

I didn’t and I don’t. I said as clearly as I could that I was quoting the odds on a successful Qualifying Campaign , not the odds on achieving Q4 AFTER Q1-3 has been achieved. I stated quite clearly that bookies will adjust their odds to shorten them because people will be then betting on a one-off event.

In the same way, people who bet on us beating our first round opponents will be offered much shorter odds than those asking for a bet on us winning all 4 ties. And, since you can be knocked out of CL at any of the 4 stages, your odds of getting to the end of Q4 tiumphant are dependant on winning the previous 3 and must be included in your appraisal of how likely Celtic are to qualify (not how likely they are to win the Q4 tie).

So, arguing what the odds are of a one off Q4 event, does not tell us what are the odds of Celtic getting through to Round 4 and then winning. You have to calculate what are the chances that they would or could have lost at Q1, Q2 and Q3. As they are dependant events ( you don’t get to contest Q2 unless you win Q1, you have to multiply the odds each time. What the odds are are up to you or the bookie to calculate but,a s they are never 100:0 (even in a Real Madrid vs North kelvinside Brownies under 8’s- a lightning strike could take out half the real team leading to an award of points to the plucky Brownshirts), they will always diminish with each passing round.
