Win over HJK worth at least £6m to Celtic

1408

Celtic will receive £1.65m from the Uefa revenue distribution system for participating in the Champions League play-off round against Helsingborgs.  Add to that around £1m gate money and the guarantee of at least three Europa League games, with Uefa distribution money, you can calculate the value of Wednesday’s win over HJK Helsinki as no less than £6m (all figures are net of vat).  Quite a prize for one game.

Compare this to the projected income from newco The Rangers, who claimed to have sold 25,000 season tickets.  If all sales were at full adult prices (£258 in vat), net income would be £5.375m.

Should Celtic overcome Helsingborgs and reach the Champions League group stage, the club will return to a remarkably strong financial footing.

    For me. It’s serious cash and fantastic experience for our team to play against Real Madrid in humid temperatures. Another bit of tuning for our next Euro experience. Thought we played well and young McGeoch was excellent up until his incident. Great experience for him and I was particularly pleased to see Wilson handle the game well to. What’s better experience for CL qualifiers. Real Madrid or SPL dross.

  3. The game was at this time because this is when RM were available pre season.

    We need as many games at this level that we can get, to learn how to play against quality teams, who keep the ball.

    Cheap shots re Dylan’s injury are despicable.

  4. Townsend is a complete prat, the commentator condescending , God bless young Dylan hail hail YNWA

  5. Like an old wives club on here sometimes, drama queens.

    Great run by Bolt, decent performance from Celtic against an excellent team in Madrid.

    Can’t wait for the real stuff to start again.

  6. That injury to Dylan could have happened anywhere, at any time. It has nothing to do with where we were playing, at what time, and in what circumstances – to connect his injury to anything else is just pathetic.

  7. townsend sat like a tailors dummy when WGS is talking celtic ………..he knows hee haw…..as ever

    I know but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

    I did say that PL didn’t know it was going to happen so to blame him is not right.

    I agree with other posters, I’d rather we were playing Dundee United tomorrow than this game today but what is done is done. We must all pray that the bhoy McGeoch is fine.

    It was a freak accident that could happen anytime, can’t blame PL or Celtlc’s drive for additional revenue streams for this.

  11. For goodness sake. Someone doesn’t know why we ‘have to make these trips over there at this time of year’……

    Because you moan that you want us to sign players;

    Because you moan you don’t want us to sell players;

    Because you moan the season tickets are too expensive;

    Because you moan that there should be more cup games on the ST;

    Because you moan the gear in the Celtic Shop is too expensive.

    Because you moan…….

    See, you can’t have it all, folks. Neil has not been keen on the pre-season trips to Oz and the USA and Canada. He was successful in that respect this summer. Lots of folk were quite happy that we took a weekend off to play in Dublin last year.

    If/when we have to play away against a team of superstars in the CL this season, someone will be moaning that we get no experience of that type.

    Well, we did today.

    Great result for Glasgow’s newest club. They have no experience at the Senior level but managed a great 2-2 draw against an experienced Peterhead. Well done Sally.

  13. Hope young Dylan is OK. Injuries like that can happen in any game, and I’m sure he would be the first to say that he would rather have had the experience of playing at the Real Madrid level rather than be sitting at home in case he got hurt. Best wishes for a speedy recovery D.McG

    PL is an employee of CFC. He is employed to carry out the CFC board agenda.

    He is not Mister Celtic though it does suit many to put him in that position.

    I wasn’t having a “cheap shot” about Dylans injury!

    I was having a go at Celtic FC agreeing to a money making friendly a long way from home which HAS resulted in a possible serious injury to one of

    our young players.

    What ever money we made tonight will contribute to Lawells bonus.

    Or is my head up my a*se.

    I hope young Dylan has suffered no serious injury.

    A head knock like that could happen in any game at anytime.

    That is the nature of footy.

    *absolutely, Danny McGrain suffered a fractured skull at Brockville, his cousin of the same name did the same while captain of Clyde heeding a wet ball at Shawfield and never really recovered.

    Celtic came to Frankfurt it would make my year. Did you see the crowd ? Decked out in the hoops … Mainly american celtic fans. It prepares us better for CL. It is fantastic exposure. We cut down on travel this year. I enjoyed it. Thought we done very well indeed. Proud of the Celts tonight. Unfortunate about Dylan but could have happened in the SPL today. The lad would have been made up to have started today.

    I have moaned in the past but thought the club got the program right apart from weak experiments against expensive frendlies like the Ajax game.

  18. Very good performance from Celtic in an exceptionally worthwhile game arranged against world class opposition, and an astonishing advertisement for our club with massive support from the Irish/Scottish/American community.

    I hope the sickening injury to Dylan McGeouch is not serious, and that the care being taken was precautionary.

    We play DDU 3 times a season.

    How often will our young squad get the chance to play and learn from Real Madrid or their likes. For me this was an important game in our build up to CL qualifier. DDU nor any other Scottish opponent could ever give us that same experience. Plus the benefit of 1 million+. The SPL will take care of itself but we need CL this season to both keep and intice players to us. Tonight was a step on the path to CL qualification.

    I know. I was reacting to an earlier post which had linked PL and the money made from that trip.

    I didn’t start the ball rolling on that one and I wasn’t looking for a board bashing/PL bashing argument. I simply said the Bhoy’s injury isn’t worth the prestige or the money.

    PL makes a lot of decisions at Celtic on behalf of the board and it is easy to blame him for everything – that isn’t what I was doing. I was saying Celtic are stuck between a rock and a hard place – we need the money but we have to take the sad downsides of such “glamour friendlies”. I don’t think we should do this again because CL money is more important than a one off 1M pounds (especially as our season has kicked off.
