Wishful transfer thinking, broken Hearts

953

Celtic have been linked with a whole barrage of players over the last 24 hours, strongly linked in some instances.  While it is more fun to drool over players coming in than fret as existing players leave the club, I’m very sure that some of the reports floating around right now are the product of wishful thinking on the part of agents trying to place their players with a top European club.

For each player you read about, two others will be under consideration, and remember the golden rule, if players or agents are talking publicly, they are not talking to Celtic.  It’s easy to generate screeds of column inches for you, or your client, with a few well-chosen phrases.

Ukio Bankas statement this morning that current bids for the assets of Hearts which they hold security over, specifically Tynecastle Stadium, scene of Scotland’s most famous non-assault, do not meet their valuation presents real challenge to the club.  Hearts are a club capable of generating in the region of £10m.  Operating the club on a budget this size will be difficult, raising enough cash to satisfy Ukio Bankas might be impossible.

Unlike the situation last year with Rangers, when Craig Whyte secured an irrevocable undertaking upon liquidation to transfer Ibrox Stadium to Sevco 5088 Ltd, Ukio Bankas liquidators are unlikely to reject a CVA but accept a lower bid for Tynecastle.  Without a stadium, a Newco is unlikely.  The best Hearts fans could be faced with is going “Cap in hand”, as they sing down Easter Road, to Hibs, with a request for Newco to ground-share.

Wallace Mercer was ahead of his time. Flats, flats……….

  1. I have been labeled a Hun on here a few times for being critical of Celtic.

The irony for me is that one of the features of being a Hun is the lack of ability to be introspective.

The Hun buries his head in the sand and is deaf dumb and blind to the truth when faced with it.

If that truth is critical of Rangers.

One of the differences between us and the Huns , is that when needed we have challenged Celtic.

    As Canamalar does now.

Incidentally , he has called me a Hun in the past.

I commend what he is doing.

    Infact I admire it.

    Good luck to his motion.

  2. Vic Davidson rejoined Celtic on 31 March 1979 from Blackpool for a fee of £30,000.

Four days later he scored Celtic’s third goal in a 4-3 victory against Motherwell at Fir Park. The other ‘scorers were McGrain(!), Doyle and Lennox(pen).

  4. FORMER Celtic striker Chris Sutton does not believe Gary Hooper has boosted his England chances by quitting Parkhead for Norwich.

Hooper waved goodbye to his team-mates last week when he ended a seven-month pursuit by the Canaries by finally signing for the Barclays Premier League side for an undisclosed fee.

But Sutton admits he has doubts as to whether the 25-year-old, who scored 31 goals for the Scottish champions last season, will have any better a chance of winning a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s squad with Chris Hughton’s men than he would have had with Celtic.

Asked if Hooper’s international prospects had increased with his move south, Sutton – who started his career at Carrow Road – said: “I don’t know – it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other. I’m not being disrespectful but Celtic are a bigger club. He won’t get as many chances down there as he would up here. But that’s his choice. He has chosen to go down there. It’s a real good signing for Norwich but I don’t know if it would enhance his England chances or not.”

Hooper became the Canaries’ seventh summer signing after he agreed personal terms and passed a medical on Friday.

Hughton first tried to sign Hooper in January and fought off competition from QPR to finally land the prolific frontman.

Hooper has signed a three-year deal with Norwich, with an option on a further year, but Sutton suggested Hooper may find it harder to find the net as often as he did with Celtic in England’s top flight.

“There is no doubt he can succeed but I think he’ll find it more difficult,” he said.

“Last year, Norwich were not the most overly attack-minded team and Chris Hughton did a good job keeping them in the Premiership. This year it will be a different ball game. They have spent heavily bringing in Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Hooper. So they will be looking for goals from him but he is very efficient and a really good finisher.”

Neil Lennon’s side face another crucial Champions League tie on Wednesday when they host Sweden’s Elfsborg in the third qualifying round first leg at Celtic Park. The biggest dilemma facing the Parkhead manager is which striker he will choose to lead his attack.

Georgios Samaras, Anthony Stokes, Tony Watt and new signing Amido Balde are all in contention but Sutton believes his former team-mate Lennon will opt to dip into the transfer market soon and sign up a ready-made replacement for last term’s top scorer.

“They are going to miss Hooper, there is no doubt. They will miss his natural goalscoring, as any team would,” said Sutton.

“But it is up to somebody else to step up to the plate. The strikers they have are in a slightly different mould with Samaras, Stokes, Watt and the new lad Balde, who in fairness I haven’t seen and can’t comment on.

“But I suspect Neil will be looking at getting someone in.”

    Report from Nottingham.

NOTTINGHAM Forest are understood to have

had an improved bid for Kelvin Wilson

accepted, which could pave the way for his

    return to the City Ground.

Sources in Scotland say Celtic have reluctantly

agreed a fee for the 27-year-old defender, who

they do not want to see leave Glasgow.

Celtic face Elfsborg in a Champions League

third qualifying round tie tomorrow night and

Hoops boss Neil Lennon had hoped to delay

any sale until after the second leg had been

    played, on August 7.

But, with the Nottingham-born player keen on

a return to his home town, Celtic are

seemingly ready to accept defeat in their fight

    to keep him.

And Lennon may have to go into the crucial

fixture without one of the players who was

integral to their surprise success in Europe

last season, when Celtic claimed a famous win

over Barcelona as they progressed to the last

    16 of the competition.

Forest had seen their initial offer of £1.5m

rejected by the Glasgow club, but it now

appears they are edging closer to making

Wilson their ninth capture of what has been a

busy summer of transfer market activity for

    the Reds.

You’re right some of the stuff is uncomfortable to read. But I think it’s better to be honest rather than live in denial about certain topics.

I had a discussion the other night with a poster about a very uncomfortable topic for RCs.

The exchange wasn’t random. It came about because the BBC covered the topic that night – a subject that is way beyond Jack Irvine’s limited influence.

    Anyway, we exchanged views.

That is that as far as I am concerned, and I would hope the other poster feels the same about it.

Some other posters reacted in a way that I felt was ‘Irvinesque’ so I just ignored them.

Wigan worry over Thomas Rogne’s injury woes

WIGAN boss Owen Coyle is sweating on the

fitness of defender Thomas Rogne ahead of

    their Championship opener against Barnsley.

Rogne, 23, joined the Latics this summer

after rejecting a new deal at Scottish

    champions Celtic.

But the Norway defender has been dogged by

a calf injury this summer, which has forced

him to miss most of Wigan’s pre-season.

  8. Morning all. Bright here at the minute.

Mark Daly’s programme last night was shocking and horrifying. I wonder if he will now turn his attention to his own employer. While I imagine false accusations made about a group of football supporters is less newsworthy than child abuse, it ill behoves those throwing the mud not examining the dirt thrown by themselves.

Has anybody else noticed that the Daily Reprobate has reappeared on the Newsnow Celtic page once again, this past month or so?

What i find surprising is that it is regularly top of the most read stories.

Each time a Celtic supporter clicks on an DR article, you give oxygen to an poisonous enemy that just happens to be struggling for air.

    I despair sometimes.

  12. Hooper gone, he gonna have his work cut out for him down there, big Vic gone, he gonna see more yellows down there than Ronnie Sullavan, Wilson, well he seems to be a player who doesn’t know what he wants, homesick? Gimmi a break Ffs he only lives 400 miles away, he is a football player it goes with the territory, so if Barcelona went for him he would turn them down, aye right! Anyway good luck to them at there new clubs who will not leave these shores to play a competitive game this season where as we will, so we move on to European Nights on Wednesday AGAIN, onward and upwards lads, Hail-Hail.

Unfortunately reading the daily record for a lot of us in our genes. I was raised on the daily record. Outside the local shop in Whitehill Street in Dennistoun there would be a queue of people at 10.30pm in their dressing gowns waiting for the night issue to arrive.

It took me a good 2 years to wean myself from the record. It used to be not too bad, until David Murray came on the scene.

  17. Just in to say….

I still read the Dr to find oot what Murdo’s take is on all things Celtic.

If Murdo was a good enough confidant for Wim Jansen then he’ll do

    for me.

I also phone in to the ‘hotline’ and consistantly cane the Cellic bored

ensuring that awe the bored’s happy-clappers stay on CQN.

I phone-in to Hugh Keevins in the main but I like the Man Utd guy

    Chris Roberts nice chap. imo

I come on to CQN to try to steer vulnerable Cellic fans away from

    the bored’s happy-clapping / balance-sheet / zero-debt sort of spin.

And I more or less make calls to the DR ‘hotline’ along the same lines

as my posts on here. I wouldn’t be 2-faced about it cause there’s a

certain CQNer who would have an unbearable wet-dream at grassing me up.

Losing hom before qualifier especially with Van Dijk out is a risky one. No confident at all with Ambrose and Mulgrew as centre halves.

  22. Wasn’t really worried until i seen the story on Wilsn this morning.

We have the Retard delivered to work along with several other papers and it is part of my job to look through them.

One of the funniest things about the Retard is the use of images – the picture editor is obviously a Zombie. But for some time now I pick it up and look forward to laughing at the pictures.

For example on today’s front page is a head-shot of Joe Ledley with a threatening expression facing a picture of Bangura looking like the most innocent man in the world.

Add a headline that has no relation to the actual quotes in the story, and the job’s a good ‘un.

Meanwhile, it’s all smiling faces down in the third-tier of Scottish football.
