Wishful transfer thinking, broken Hearts

953

Celtic have been linked with a whole barrage of players over the last 24 hours, strongly linked in some instances.  While it is more fun to drool over players coming in than fret as existing players leave the club, I’m very sure that some of the reports floating around right now are the product of wishful thinking on the part of agents trying to place their players with a top European club.

For each player you read about, two others will be under consideration, and remember the golden rule, if players or agents are talking publicly, they are not talking to Celtic.  It’s easy to generate screeds of column inches for you, or your client, with a few well-chosen phrases.

Ukio Bankas statement this morning that current bids for the assets of Hearts which they hold security over, specifically Tynecastle Stadium, scene of Scotland’s most famous non-assault, do not meet their valuation presents real challenge to the club.  Hearts are a club capable of generating in the region of £10m.  Operating the club on a budget this size will be difficult, raising enough cash to satisfy Ukio Bankas might be impossible.

Unlike the situation last year with Rangers, when Craig Whyte secured an irrevocable undertaking upon liquidation to transfer Ibrox Stadium to Sevco 5088 Ltd, Ukio Bankas liquidators are unlikely to reject a CVA but accept a lower bid for Tynecastle.  Without a stadium, a Newco is unlikely.  The best Hearts fans could be faced with is going “Cap in hand”, as they sing down Easter Road, to Hibs, with a request for Newco to ground-share.

Sutton says Hooper move won’t lift England hopes

FORMER Celtic striker Chris Sutton does not believe Gary Hooper has boosted his England chances by quitting Parkhead for Norwich.

Hooper waved goodbye to his team-mates last week when he ended a seven-month pursuit by the Canaries by finally signing for the Barclays Premier League side for an undisclosed fee.

But Sutton admits he has doubts as to whether the 25-year-old, who scored 31 goals for the Scottish champions last season, will have any better a chance of winning a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s squad with Chris Hughton’s men than he would have had with Celtic.

Asked if Hooper’s international prospects had increased with his move south, Sutton – who started his career at Carrow Road – said: “I don’t know – it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other. I’m not being disrespectful but Celtic are a bigger club. He won’t get as many chances down there as he would up here. But that’s his choice. He has chosen to go down there. It’s a real good signing for Norwich but I don’t know if it would enhance his England chances or not.”

Hooper became the Canaries’ seventh summer signing after he agreed personal terms and passed a medical on Friday.

Hughton first tried to sign Hooper in January and fought off competition from QPR to finally land the prolific frontman.

Hooper has signed a three-year deal with Norwich, with an option on a further year, but Sutton suggested Hooper may find it harder to find the net as often as he did with Celtic in England’s top flight.

“There is no doubt he can succeed but I think he’ll find it more difficult,” he said.

“Last year, Norwich were not the most overly attack-minded team and Chris Hughton did a good job keeping them in the Premiership. This year it will be a different ball game. They have spent heavily bringing in Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Hooper. So they will be looking for goals from him but he is very efficient and a really good finisher.”

Neil Lennon’s side face another crucial Champions League tie on Wednesday when they host Sweden’s Elfsborg in the third qualifying round first leg at Celtic Park. The biggest dilemma facing the Parkhead manager is which striker he will choose to lead his attack.

Georgios Samaras, Anthony Stokes, Tony Watt and new signing Amido Balde are all in contention but Sutton believes his former team-mate Lennon will opt to dip into the transfer market soon and sign up a ready-made replacement for last term’s top scorer.

“They are going to miss Hooper, there is no doubt. They will miss his natural goalscoring, as any team would,” said Sutton.

“But it is up to somebody else to step up to the plate. The strikers they have are in a slightly different mould with Samaras, Stokes, Watt and the new lad Balde, who in fairness I haven’t seen and can’t comment on.

“But I suspect Neil will be looking at getting someone in.”

Keep out of it, Mo: Ledley tells Bangura to miss Euro qualifier against Celtic

Joe Ledley told Mo Bangura he would be guilty of disrespecting Celtic by playing in Wednesday’s Champions League showdown.

And the Welsh midfielder also warned that Bangura may never be able to return to Parkhead if he helps Elfsborg shatter the European dreams of Neil Lennon’s side.

The Sierra Leone striker’s participation has been the hot topic in the build-up to the first leg of the third-round qualifier in the east end of Glasgow.

Bangura is currently on loan at Elfsborg after failing to score a goal for Celtic following his switch from AIK Stockholm in 2011.

The Swedes remain adamant they will field the 24-year-old in the tie as there is nothing in the loan agreement precluding his involvement.

Parkhead boss Lennon is firmly against his participation, however, leaving Bangura with a self-confessed ‘dilemma’ to confront. Ledley admitted some sympathy for his erstwhile team-mate, but strongly backed Lennon’s stance.

‘If I was in the same position as Mo, I probably wouldn’t play in the game out of loyalty and respect to Celtic,’ he said. ‘He’s contracted to the club and I don’t think it would be the best move for him.

‘But some players are different — maybe he’s trying to get a reaction from people and prove how good he is.

‘If he scored the winner and knocked us out of the Champions League, then it would be difficult for him to come back.

‘It would be a huge blow for the club and that’s why he must think before he plays.

‘It’s massive for us players, the club and the fans. What we showed last season was magnificent and hopefully we can do it again this season.’

Ledley also insisted there would be no room for old friendships if Bangura did feature for Elfsborg.

‘We won’t blank Mo,’ said the former Cardiff man. ‘If he’s in the tunnel, then we’ll shake his hand. But when the whistle goes, it’s totally different.

‘We all know what Mo Bangura is good at and what he’s not good at. Whether he plays or not is down to the player, but we know his strengths and weaknesses and it’s a bit of an advantage to us.

‘We might try to noise him up a bit. He’s chosen not to take a step back from the game, so we just need to treat him like any other opponent and, if a ball is there to won, then you’ve got to go in and win it.’

Meanwhile, Dutch left winger Derk Boerrigter has arrived in Glasgow and was undergoing a medical on Monday night with a view to completing his £2million move to Celtic on a three-year deal.

However just took my ten year old daughter out and she humiliated me! There’s me with my expensive lures flogging the water and I set up a rod with a single hook a big worm and a float. Ten minutes in and she lands a three pound large mouth bass! Think I am giving up fishing :( pretty proud though :)

    BETTER than Petta? Not quite.

For all that, ex-Celtic winger Bobby Petta insists new Bhoy Derk Boerrigter is a carbon copy of him.

Ajax ace Boerrigter, 26, was last night on the verge of completing his £3million move to Parkhead after arriving in Glasgow.

Fellow Dutchman Petta, a star in the early years of Martin O’Neill’s reign, insists Neil Lennon has pulled off a massive coup in landing the winger.

Petta said: “I see a little bit of myself in Derk. He likes to drive forward, take people on, and is comfortable going inside or outside. He has a similar style to my own and this guy can play, believe me.

“He is an old-fashioned, classic, Dutch-style winger and that is something we don’t see enough of these days. It is hard to find guys with Derk’s qualities in the modern game and I’m confident he will be a huge success here.

“Derk will excite the Celtic fans. He will get them off their seats and they will love watching him.

“Throughout Celtic’s history, they’ve always had talented wingers, guys who can entertain the fans.

“James Forrest provides that type of quality on the right and now Lenny has a fantastic option on the left. Derk is full of skill, pace and has an end product.

“He is great in one-on-one situations, he loves taking people on and getting crosses in. He scores goals and makes them. What more do you want in a winger?

“I’m looking forward to seeing him in action with Celtic. He is the perfect addition to Lenny’s squad.

“His pace and movement will bring a lot to Celtic.

“I’m really excited to see him pull on the Hoops.”

Petta is still based in Glasgow and watches as many Celtic matches as he can.

The Dutchman is a massive fan of the side Lennon has built over the last three years.

But Petta believes the Hoops have been crying out for more width, and insists that Boerrigter will provide it.

He added: “Lenny has been looking for a left-sided player for quite a while, and Derk has all the attributes to be a top signing for Celtic.

“Derk is exactly what Lenny needs. He will add a new dimension and give them real width.

“If you get Forrest on one wing and Derk on the other side, what an attacking threat Celtic will have. I met Didier Agathe recently and we spoke about our team under Martin O’Neill and the width we had in the side.

“You had Didier on one side with his pace and direct style, then me on the other side with more tricks.

“If you have that type of variety on the wings, you can’t fail to create chances and Derk will do extremely well for Celtic.

“He will add a completely fresh quality to their attacking play.

“You just need to look at the footage of him to realise he has a strong shot with either foot. Derk will get his fair share of goals for Celtic — I’m certain of that.”

Lennon is still searching for a replacement for Gary Hooper, but Petta claims Boerrigter could fill in as a striker if needed. Standing at 6ft 2ins, the Dutchman possesses an aerial threat and is a handful for defences.

Petta said: “Derk could play up front if Lenny needs something different in that position. He is a big lad and can handle himself.

“He’s had a great grounding in the Ajax Academy. He has superb technique and he will settle in well to Scottish football.

“At 26, he is coming to Celtic at a good age. He has experience but still has time to improve and get even better at Celtic.

“He is moving to a top club and can be a massive player in the Champions League.”

Boerrigter could be handed a quickfire debut against Elfsborg in tomorrow night’s crunch Euro qualifier — providing he signs by 11pm tonight. Petta insists the winger could handle that and could be Celtic’s secret weapon.

He added: “I would have no concerns about playing Derk in this game. He’s completed a pre-season with Ajax, so if he is free of injury Lenny will probably involve him at some stage.

“If he wants to throw him in from the start, I don’t think that would be an issue. He would handle it no problem.

“Derk has experience and will be desperate for a chance to show Celtic fans what he can do.

“Derk could make a difference in these European qualifiers. Celtic will be looking to pin Elfsborg back and to create chances and he could help them do that.”

Kevinlasvegas – no chance re jelle Vossen. Genk are too reliant on him. he is their captain, and main striker. Also, they aren’t short of cash. if we want to sign him, we would have to offer a lot more money than we do for any other player these days. Seriously – he might go somewhere for big cash, but it would be a miracle if celtic were to sign him.

I have stated before on here though – we should watch KRC Genk very closely…. they have a lot of players who could add to our squad. if Kelvin W does leave, i would move smartly to sign Koulibaly from Genk – huge french stopper defender – came through the system at metz, along with many other very good players played all age groups for france. Kara Mbodj would also be my choice to replace wanyama – bigger, quick and very strong indeed. Their squad is very similar to ours (Kenyans, africans from scandinavia, scandinavians, tendency to sign athletic players etc etc). in fact, if J Park ever leaves, i would advocate a bid to sign Genk’s Directeur Sportif – Dirk Degraen. they have signed several players who we have expressed interest in/been linked with: Ojo – big nigerian forward from norway, sandomierski -polish keeper who we bid for, and possibly others.

He is an excellent player (sitting just behind Benteke and Lukaku in the pecking order for their national team).

there is another striker playing in the Belgian league – also has a couple of caps. the KAA Gent captian – Ilombe Mboyo is 26 and has a couple of caps for the national team. Big strong striker (6’3″) and has scored 36 in 77 for Gent. (Not a bad return in a struggling mid-table team). I feel he is worth a very close look.

From reading back I can find no answer to the question I posed yesterday morning so I take it I’m fairly safe in assuming nobody challenged Sandy Bryson’s interpretation of the SFA’s registration process he presented to the Nimmo Smith inquiry, nor does it contravene Uefa/Fifa rules.
