Withering in the vine, sin and orange

633

At 21-years-old Tom Rogic should be strongly staking his claim for a central midfield berth at Celtic.  The fact that he’s not is a disappointment to the player, and apparently the nation of Australia.  It’s also a disappointment to you and me.  He has the physique and the passing ability but after some tentatively positive performances last season he hasn’t kicked on as hoped.

There could be lots of reasons for this, it’s not necessarily the ‘fault’ of the player, his ability or the club, but football careers wither on the vine when clubs hoard talent.  If Tom can get some game-time under his belt at Melbourne Victory, and potentially get to Brazil in the summer, we will have a better indication if he is the real deal.

Someone just text me, “Rangers need to be a long-term sustainable business and that’s the bottom line.  The club needs to change”, from that memorable Craig Whyte interview to The Scotsman in 2012. Groundhog Day….

So Fifa presidential candidate, Jerome Champagne, has proposed the introduction of a sin-bin, to be invoked by the referee brandishing an orange card.  What’s your view on this, is there a universal association between sin and orange, or is this another subversive plot by Celtic fans? I have my suspicions.

Penalise the offending team by 15 or 20 yards

That was actually on the table for dissent as well as the orange card. Not sure if the orange card was specifically for dissent.

  2. Paul67,

I have to admit that I’m disappointed that Rogic has so far not made the mark I thought he was capable of doing at Celtic. He seemed to have the attributes to do well, but for whatever reason it hasnt transpired.

Perhaps this loan spell and a decent stint at the World Cup will give him the platform to do just that, but as other posters have stated, very few loanees come back into a first team slot at Celtic.

However according to the article on BT I posted earlier, Rogic claims he is a better player now than he was 12 months ago, but obviously just not good enough to break through ahead of the current 1st-teamers.

Good Luck to the boy regardless.

Aye. I agree with that. And simply sticking to the hard facts avoids wasting any time on the subject.

I don’t get too stressed by the off-the-wall claims over the status of the new club – as it really strays into David Icke territory. Their status is not a matter of opinion, it is a matter of public record.

Getting into debates about it is as pointless as arguing over the colour of a pint of Guinness.

What I like about them is the team that gets offended against, gets an advantage – not another team when the offender is suspended a few weeks later.

  10. If anyone in the football world is wondering how Jerome Champagne’s proposal for orange cards will work then they should come to Scotland for some knowledge.

The orange card has been getting used up here for years.

Also, is there a chance that an orange card might be hard to distinguish from a red card by fans sitting at a distance?

Picture the scene, the ref brandishes a card, the crowd think its a stright red and all of a sudden an almighty barney breaks out. The crowd are pelting the ref with flumps and tangy toms, bad language ensues all around, the police wade in with batons and arrest 150 fans and injure many more, while a government official sitting in the stand immediately gets on the blower to the first minister to convene a summit of important people…

then wee jimmy at the back of the stand with his opera glasses shouts down “hang on ladies, it’s only an orange not a red card”. The baying mob then re-take their seats slightly embarrassed about the whole episode

I think the card should be a different colour from orange, maybe black and white checked, or purple and mauve stripes.

It will save a whole lot of trouble in the long run.

The solution is quite simple. Someone should tell them that we live in a democracy and that these are all publicly elected officials. If they feel so strongly about refusing RC’s a place in office they should vote for a non RC next time. Maybe they could even find a party which expressly denounces Catholicism. The BNP might be a decent starting point for them.

Until the last couple of years, football and education were mutually exclusive beyond age 15. Even now, clubs encourage their better kids to go full time from age 16, thus cutting out Highers for most of them.

Kids were (and to a lesser extent still are) asked to sacrifice their education for a shot at becoming a footballer. 95% of those who take the punt at age 16 don’t make it.

An Ornage card in Scotland :-( Well one thing is for sure our unbiased refs would have a great time brandishing it at the uppity Tims.

I am certain that to keep its historical context with the blood of our blood (copyright wee fat Alex ‘i want a divorce’ Salmond) and the ‘we are the pepil’ types the SFA will insist that once the Orange card is played the refs will have to shout “Ulster will fight”

It’s for the very reasons that you outline that in all the years where I coached young footballers that I always told them to steer clear of Celtic and what at the time was Rangers.

Don’t get me wrong it was frequently a decision that plucked hard at my conscience but for the benefits of the boys themselves I stuck to what I believed was in their best long term interests.

I’ve mentioned that I coached Dylan McGeouch at primary level. However, at the same time there was a boy the same age who was streets ahead of Dylan in skill, strength, movement, passing, tackling and shooting.

That boy was offered a contract at Rangers, a strange decision given the fondness for Celtic in the entire family.

I spoke to him not long after he’d signed at Rangers and asked him what on earth was he thinking and why hadn’t he spoken to me first (he’d always said that he would). He replied that he thought I’d just tell him to go to Celtic, who were also wanting his signature.

On the contrary I told him, my advice would have been to go to any other club besides us and them.

You may have noticed one attributed that was omitted from the list of talents.

Team work; Dylan was always much more concerned for the team than himself.

I saw that other boy about a year ago. He was standing with a bottle of Buckie and had a huge hatchet scar to his head.

    An incredible talent, wasted.

IMO,your advice was spot-on. Disgraceful that his club didn’t judge his circumstances, only his talent.

Sadly it is all too prevalent. And it has been so for decades.

If anything, clubs prepare their “cubs” better now in case of not making the cut than they did years back.

But,as a teacher, you will know how difficult it is to persuade kids that, actually, they DON’T know it all.
