World records now beckon for Celtic

605

It was a league game at Tannadice, Hogmanay 1966, which ended the Lisbon Lions 26 game unbeaten domestic run, a record which stood until yesterday. Stein’s Celtic were comfortable and led with 20 minutes to go, but United scored twice in three minutes and before the Champions had time to realise they were in trouble, it was too late.

That’s how historic runs end.

It’s only this season anyone has paid attention to that specific record, such were the overwhelming achievements which unfolded in the months ahead for the men who would become known as Lions. With the League Cup already secured, they added the Scottish Cup and the League title, before becoming the first team to break the Italian-Spanish-Portuguese hegemony on the European Cup.

The serendipity of one of the Lions records falling while we celebrate the 50th anniversary of their great achievements should not be lost.

Season 66-67 wasn’t just about Lisbon. Celtic retained the league for the first time since the Great War – a 50-year gap without defending the league title! They won the treble, the (then competitive) Glasgow Cup, and finished off with a virtuoso performance at the Bernabeu. They changed Scotland forever; nothing would ever be the same again.

Hearts only offered effective opposition for around 5 minutes yesterday, but if/when we lose a domestic game this season, it’s likely to follow the format of St Johnstone’s visit last midweek. St Johnstone defended every Celtic attack bar one and created a chance which could have bounced off the post more generously for them.

All the pressure and superiority in the world are irrelevant in the face of the statistical certainty that, in one game, a dominant team will miss all their chances and concede one of the few they are called to defend.

More records beckon for this Celtic team, not just Scottish ones. Benfica’s world record 29-game consecutive league game winning record has proven impossible to match. But, there’s one team with a chance of doing so this season…………

good question indeed, but not one i’d want put to the test – once a year for qualifying is all my heart can take

    BREAKING NEWS

Chelsea are interested in signing Celtic striker Moussa Dembele – but it may cost then £40m to secure a move to Stamford Bridge.

We understand Celtic are extremely reluctant to sell in this window and would not consider a bid below £40m.

Dembele’s progress has been monitored closely by Chelsea, who have been linked with a number of strikers in this window, most recently Llorente at Swansea.

Dembele joined Celtic on a free transfer in June last year, from Fulham, on a four year deal.

    Jeeeeezo!

If the SMSM flog off many more of our players, we’ll need to field the development team for the rest of the season just to fulfil our fixtures!

The bad news for them is that Sevco still wouldn’t catch us!

    TET,

I believe too many have accepted the MSM agenda without asking why that agenda is so vitriolic.

Trump is a capitalist who is a capitalist you know what you are dealing with, he is frightening the corporate classes and their useful idiots.

JC2 – that’s basically what I was trying to say.

If there was a viable alternative – the club wouldn’t be hiring from that Parks mob – obviously there is no alternative, or the Easedales are the only other company whom have luxury coaches/buses for hire.

Looks like we are stuck with them, unless Dermot Desmond buys the company.

    Natknow,

I’ve answered it twice already, there are 7 countries on the list all are countries identified by Obamas bill. Trump has implemented nothing yet however his executive order is to deal with more rigorous vetting.

So here’s how I see it, Trump has changed the foreign policy of the USA, rather than financially backing terrorist groups he is concentrating on working with the Russians to fight terrorists.

Both the democrats and republicans want him out, that tells me the establishment is hurting, that’s the same establishment that have been indiscriminately slaughtering civilians all over the world. You fear him I welcome him, I read some amount of shite on here about how bad he is going to be. As yet none of that has materialised, he has killed off the TTP, he has changed the whole Syrian landscape. Tell me, do you think Hilary would have changed that for the better, her Clinton foundation is swollen by Saudi donations, her campaign was swollen by Saudi donations that was the alternative, are you telling me that murderous bitch was the better option not only for the USA but the rest of the world ?

Aye Trump has probably got business interests all over the world, here’s a thing, Thump made a big deal about the president and Vice President being immune from conflict of interest, introduced by Regan. He made a show of transferring control of his business interests to his sons. We now have the Clinton, Obama and Bush ethics advisors questioning Trumps actions and saying he is not going far enough. Point being what advice did they give the people who positioned them. Remember the President and Vice President are immune from conflict of interest, Trump never made this rule but he has made it very public knowledge yet here we are arguing about the first President to intimate waiving that immunity. Do I believe he will completely detach himself, of course I don’t but can anyone here hand on heart tell me any of his predecessors did ? Was it an issue, yes, everyone in the world knew Iraq was to allow Bushs Enron access to their natural resources, no a big deal eh. A guy that builds hotels is very unlikely going to destroy countries he wants his company to invest in is he ?

His protectionist ideas are looking after his own people, that’s his job.

I don’t care if he builds a wall, I don’t care if he doesn’t like Muslims honest I could not give a funkeys muck, I don’t care if he excludes people from the USA, this country just voted to exclude people from the UK who the **** do people think they are, we have a split blog on nationalist grounds peel who think being insular is best for Scotland but not the USA. Globalisation is/was moving too fast for everyone but corporations to take advantage of. It was becoming a bank led revolution that was always going to end up returning civilisation to acceptance of slavery. Many people have the great motives for not liking or trusting Trump but as yet none have offered an acceptable alternative, for me he was the lesser of two evils, too head strong to be controlled by the establishment and that’s a start.

Your point was that the NY Times was just the Daily Record.

Meaning what? That I should dismiss it purely on that basis?

    Their argument is still valid.

Brendan was big enough to admit his mistake in dropping Gordon and rectified it, all before a ball was kicked in the Champions League.

Yip, I also can’t get the head around the virtual total acceptance of what the msm spin about him.

It’s as if the establishment are now the good guys, the mind boggles so it does.

The biggest prob is tho, being the lesser of two evils, is still an evil, but such is the way things are.

If you and our fellow workers were working for £45 a week in 1980 then they you were being seriously underpaid. Average earnings were three times that. I earned £120 basic in a factory two years earlier, overtime would take me over £200 per week. A refinery would equal that, and you could get £30 a day on a building site labouring in 1980. Charlie might seem to have been a high earner to you but the fact is he earned little more than a male manual worker. Doesn’t make me a fan of his nowadays mind you.

CANAMALAR – The MSM is dead mate as source for accurate news.

Mostly all conjecture, speculation, opinion and propaganda.

Look at that Guardian rag – hemorrhaging money – thing is this – it can continue because it is funded solely for propaganda purposes.

You look at alternative news sources like that Paul Joseph Watson character – they are simply destroying the likes of the BBC, CNN, Fox,Bloomberg, Sky etc.

Same as the football blogs online – CelticQuickNews not lazy journalism.

Who in their right mind trusts the British Broadcasting Corporation fs?

People look to other media outlets now.

The difficulties arise when trying to debate with individuals whose ONLY source of news is MSM propaganda & lies.

    Natknow,

Aye dismiss it out of hand completely or at least do a bit of research don’t simply reproduce it without question.

As I said, since Regan, every President has been conflict immune on business interests why is it only becoming important to you now ? Why is it more important that someone who invests their money building hotels and leisure facilities rather than oil and natural resources have more restrictions or have his integrity questioned more than those who have started wars to protect their interests, I don’t remember Trump ever sabre rattling except against terrorists, do you ?

Also the question was based on a false premis, the premis that it was Trumps law, again it was Obamas law the seven countries named were named by Obama what has that got to do with Trumps business interests ?

  16. I love big Moussa the hunskelper but if we are talking £40m, take the cash. I don’t think it will happen though.

  20. I think Brendan is being cute floating the £40 mil tag, lots of big clubs keeping tabs on him seemingly, might smoke a few of them out….

  21. !!bada bing!!

I heard big Pete has already been on the phone to WITS to tell him to get his car in gear.

Or was that his act in gear?

  22. A year and a half ago, 19 y/old France u21 striker Anthony Martial went for a potential £58m. Moussa Dembele at exact same stage of career..

  23. Congrats to Brendan and his squad of players on an outstanding achievement in breaking the record of the Lisbon Lions, Brendan has worked a miracle in such a short time at the helm since his arrival at Celtic Park, turning water into wine in some cases with his players and making the Holy Grail of Champions League football and importantly boosting the finances of the club.

The comparison with the Lisbon Lions is a little unfair in my estimation. Jock Stein’s Celtic Lions proved to be one of the best club sides in World.
