World records now beckon for Celtic

605

It was a league game at Tannadice, Hogmanay 1966, which ended the Lisbon Lions 26 game unbeaten domestic run, a record which stood until yesterday. Stein’s Celtic were comfortable and led with 20 minutes to go, but United scored twice in three minutes and before the Champions had time to realise they were in trouble, it was too late.

That’s how historic runs end.

It’s only this season anyone has paid attention to that specific record, such were the overwhelming achievements which unfolded in the months ahead for the men who would become known as Lions. With the League Cup already secured, they added the Scottish Cup and the League title, before becoming the first team to break the Italian-Spanish-Portuguese hegemony on the European Cup.

The serendipity of one of the Lions records falling while we celebrate the 50th anniversary of their great achievements should not be lost.

Season 66-67 wasn’t just about Lisbon. Celtic retained the league for the first time since the Great War – a 50-year gap without defending the league title! They won the treble, the (then competitive) Glasgow Cup, and finished off with a virtuoso performance at the Bernabeu. They changed Scotland forever; nothing would ever be the same again.

Hearts only offered effective opposition for around 5 minutes yesterday, but if/when we lose a domestic game this season, it’s likely to follow the format of St Johnstone’s visit last midweek. St Johnstone defended every Celtic attack bar one and created a chance which could have bounced off the post more generously for them.

All the pressure and superiority in the world are irrelevant in the face of the statistical certainty that, in one game, a dominant team will miss all their chances and concede one of the few they are called to defend.

More records beckon for this Celtic team, not just Scottish ones. Benfica’s world record 29-game consecutive league game winning record has proven impossible to match. But, there’s one team with a chance of doing so this season…………

  2. Celtic has asked the SPFL for a postponement of Wednesday’s fixture against Aberdeen due to the fact they expect all of their first team squad to be sold before tomorrow’s transfer deadline.

A spokesman said that unless they can secure the services of Barry MacKay and Jak Alnwick then they may as well concede the title.

Trump says no more regime change and from what I’ve seen the majority of CQNers would rather have the madam of regime change in power and they call themselves liberals ffs

Obama who every Tuesday of his second presidency selected victims for remote execution and everyone else in the vicinity was considered acceptable collateral damage. Being directly responsible for killing human beings is collateral damage and Trump is the unacceptable face of capitalism FFP, some people need to have a look themselves in the mirror and ask what exactly their objections are about, for me the status quo is not an option.

  8. AT- You are buying the player , not the league he’s playing in IMO, Look how we got mugged for van Dijk, yes we get a nice sell on fee but Southampton get the prize.

    Celtic 1 – Real Madrid 3 . A Monday night . A massive crowd.

*the main memories of this then wee high school lhad were:

    1. Celtic supporters chanting ‘Celtic cha cha cha”, probably for the first time

    2. Coming back fae 3 down and having a good 2nd goal chalked off, both by 2nd half sub Stevie.

    3. The fans refusing tae leave the park until the players did a lap of honour

    4. Real stars amazed at the response of our desperate for success support

    5. Either DiStefano or Puskas stating what will they be like if they ever win anything of note (eh invade the park at Lisbon and then beat your mob less than 2 weeks later at the famed Bernabeu)

    6. The much maligned (especially by me) Bob Kelly saying that he had found his secret weapon against the continentals – Stevie Chalmers.

    7. The SMSM mocking this statement and labelling our future Lisbon hero “DiStephanie”. They would be laughing on the other side of their faces 4 years, 8 moths and 15 days later.

Business man was Max Benjamin . Game raised money to help with the settlement of women and children In Israel who were refugees from Eastern Europe and North Africa.

*They were playing for the “blue and white trophy”, my da was convinced we would win as it seems we always won 1 off trophies.

Max Benjamin was a Celtic supporter and why not as we were always inclusive and once again volunteering to help the less fortunate.

Looking back at that side there were 4 future EC winners medals and 2 squad members in it as well as 1 player who ran round the Estádio Nacional after the game with a tricolour while playing for another side, 9 Scottish and 1 internationalists either then or future. The other sub that night prior to joining us had won a Junior Cup winners medal, was Junior POY and scored 75 goals in that season.

How the heck did we not win anything of note other than 2 Glasgow Cups and 1 Charity Cup with 1 being shared with the Bully Wee. Mibbees the answer lies with one of our stars that night being sold against his wishes 4 months later.

Thank the Lord the Big Mhan came when he did and our young players could then fulfill their promise and oul Bob take a back seat.

    Natknow,

Aye dismiss it out of hand completely or at least do a bit of research don’t simply reproduce it without question.

As I said, since Regan, every President has been conflict immune on business interests why is it only becoming important to you now ? Why is it more important that someone who invests their money building hotels and leisure facilities rather than oil and natural resources have more restrictions or have his integrity questioned more than those who have started wars to protect their interests, I don’t remember Trump ever sabre rattling except against terrorists, do you ?

Also the question was based on a false premis, the premis that it was Trumps law, again it was Obamas law the seven countries named were named by Obama what has that got to do with Trumps business interests ?

    —————————–

It’s a perfectly legitimate question. You want me to dismiss it on the basis that you don’t like the MSM. Keep avoiding if you want but I’d rather engage in the question.

So despite my usual tendencies I won’t speculate on the “Winter Windae” or add my tuppence to the so called Muslim ban.

  20. Just pondering Brendan and yesterday’s game..without 7 players we still were pretty solid with all our players knowing their job. Armstrong injury and McGregor comes on plays well scores the opener. Then James comes off and Henderson comes on and has a great game with 3 defence splitting passes. Takes of Paddy and Aitchison comes on and wins a pen. Hearts put on Sammon and Brendan brings off Gamboa and puts on Lustig to combat his height.

Seems to know what he’s doing in a game…players all seem happy. So lucky or brilliant..I tend to err on brilliant with a good dose of Irish luck.

Good to see a wee sense of reality in the windae speculation

A postponement would give us time to fix the roof, repair the bathrooms, secure a short term loan to buy Hill and McKay and rip out the standing section.

    Maybe some Whyte and McKay.

The nytimes states it’s a Trump executive order when it is in fact an Obama executive order why would the MSM want to obfuscate that I wonder eh.

Why was Saudis name not on that list you need to ask Obama not Trump therefore the question which was actually why is Saudi not on the list ? Is a question for Obama you offerd an article which opens with lie ins about who was responsible for the executive order. So again, please explain

Why Saudis name was not on the list ? Is a legitimate question for Trump ?

While your at it why the nytimes who lied about whose executive order it is, is an acceptable reference for you to parrot without even the most cursory check on its validity ?

I have tried to explain why I think that, can you explain why you think it’s legitimate ?

    ———————————————————–

It’s a legitimate question because Mr. Trump has stated the purpose of his action is to protect US citizens from terror. Yet there are a number of countries you would expect to be subject to such restrictions and which are glaring by their absence. It’s reasonable to ask why he is being so selective. The NYT (and others) have put forward a line of argument that he has business interests in Saudi etc. That’s not a false premise – it’s a question that needs to be addressed.

Now I could argue for or against the NYT position – but only if I engage with their argument in the first place.

Your original comment didn’t ask me to dismiss it on the basis of it being a valid question or not – you were looking for me to dismiss it on the basis of who raised it (i.e. the NYT).

Which really doesn’t make it go away…

You can have a valid argument that still leads to a false conclusion.
