You did this

296

We were hurting earlier this year.  Sentiment among the support, the players and the backroom staff was at floor level.  It felt like it was just you and me left.  Not for the first time, that was enough.  A year after 50,000 bought season tickets and did not get to see Celtic, they did so again, even though the world is not ready for many to mingle in just yet (Martin42 included).

Celtic is not our choice, it is us, as indistinguishable from who we are as our own image in the mirror.  Without that pull to support our club, especially when in need, it would have floundered many decades ago.  In the 1950s, Celtic was close to being eclipsed by Hibs, who had the players and recent trophies Celtic did not, with crowds on a par.  The years before 1965 were humbling for a generation some of whom still come to enjoy success like they once never dreamed.

The 1990s were no better.  Made to feel like foreigners in our own land, we looked to Celtic to provide a firm strain of identity.  We hung in there, at times by the skin of our teeth.  Then the new millennium brought glories not seen since Jock Stein’s great era.

We are a club born to raise funds for the needy.  That has been difficult over the last two years, with events precarious to plan and collections needing footfall that was often missing.  It is all the more remarkable that your Foundation broke new records this year, raising more money through it’s Christmas Appeal than ever.  What I see in the discrete and anonymous actions of Celtic fans is humbling.

People who would run a mile from drawing attention to their acts.  Many who clearly have little to give, giving anyway.  Others throwing £20 in a bucket and telling their pals to do the same.  If you ever want to feel humble, spend some quality time with Celtic fans.

Why do they do this?  As I said above, it is indistinguishable from who they are.  They are Celtic and this is what Celtic means.  It is an honour to stand among you.

Take care and have a very Happy Christmas.

Greenpinata whilst I know what you mean (result I think) that was not Football from St Mirren the other night.

“If someone takes joy from that they should change sport.”

Couldn’t agree more DAVID66. These teams should be lambasted in the media for playing like that, they would have played the same way if they had their full team out as well, just like most teams do against us and them. They’re praised in print and radio for stalwart defending and guff like that and they wonder why we can’t get better deals for TV, how on earth would neutrals or fans want to watch that week in week out, por cierto

  3. “Allan McGregor” and “sporting integrity” in the same sentence – things you thought you’d never see, Volume 1.

  4. Good news for those, like myself, who gave up paying Sky Sports ages ago, Sunday’s game is also available on Sky Showcase.

Celtic have appointed Michael Nicholson their permanent chief executive after he supported manager Ange Postecoglou “brilliantly” during his interim spell.

The 45-year-old had stepped up from his position as director of legal and football affairs in September after Dominic McKay’s surprise resignation.

Finance director Chris McKay becomes chief financial officer with a “broader range” of responsibilities.

Chairman Ian Bankier said the decision brings “important continuity”.

SPFL hopeful crowds can return after early break

“They have been close to Ange since his arrival as football manager in the summer,” he told the Stock Exchange, adding that Nicholson “is well known and highly respected across football domestically and internationally”.

Following a career in sports law, Nicholson joined Celtic in 2013 as company secretary and head of legal, was promoted to director of legal and football affairs in 2019.

He then stepped into he breach when Dominic McKay left only two months after succeeding Peter Lawwell.

Describing himself as a lifetime Celtic supporter, Nicholson said his appointment is “a privilege” and that he hopes to help the Glasgow club enjoy “continuing success” despite the current “uncertain” current environment.

  6. 45 years old, that means he can stay in the position for the next 15 years at least, given there is no real time defined tenure.

remind me what has really changed in the ownership model – a group of the original owners families versus todays group of dermo and pals.

  7. Re the transfer window opening on the 1st. Thought about this a couple of nights ago, when watching the game, and it came to me that if Ange is saying he wants business done quickly, I thought, if it is to be Japanese players, then perhaps bring them over now put them up at a hotel and get the quarantine part done and out of the way, as their season has finished and Christmas is not a national holiday, though they do celebrate. They could then sign their contracts on the 1st and be ready to go immediately. Perhaps that is happening or happened, anybody, checking the flights from Japan? :)) por cierto.

  8. Hope all on CQN have a happy and safe Christmas.

It’s been a traumatic year for quite a few and I read there are concerns from Big Jimmy. Hope we are all able to be back on here in 2022 to continue the joint celebrations / commiserations that is the reason that keeps me coming back.

  9. Excellent Paul Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones and a Merry Christmas to our great Celtic family.

Folly not to look at getting them now really.

  11. Football. The 0-0 draw is still annoying me. There were enough chances but we collectively chose wrong options. Even the normally reliable Callum chose to attempt a difficult first time shot when there seemed to be time to control and shoot. And others chose the opposite when an early shot looked to be the better option.

    Mentally drained rather than physical?

A final push against St Johnstone to get a victory then a rest before reconvening with new faces in the squad (and I expect a weakened squad across the city)

If McGregor is so worried about sporting integrity, he could start by suggesting that all clubs send their test samples to the same lab rather than one club sending them to another country.

Someone on here mentioned a few weeks back that the person who owned that facility is an RC Northern Irishman and doubted very much if anything untoward was happening. The problem, I think, arises from how their positive tests were handled re players being available regarding close contact rules, they seemed to be changed when the need arose, por cierto.

The transfer window opens on 1st January. You cannot register new players until then and contracts cannot take effect until then.

YEP,I know that Tom,but what’s to stop them coming now,I think at least one is out of contract. The others, their season has finished. We don’t register them until 1st Jan,but they could be here now, maybe having to Quarantine, get set up in accommodation,VISIT (Ahem ),Lennoxtown. No?

  17. A fine article, Paul. Merry Xmas to you and all your loved ones.

Thanks again for providing this CQN platform for the rest of us to communicate with one another (or scroll past in some cases lol).

All the best for 2022 everyone.

Thoughts especially to all the Bhoys and Ghirls who are sadly no longer with us, and to the families and friends they leave behind.

On a personal level, that includes my dear mother who passed away peacefully in September, and my best friend Tom (Squire Danaher of this parish) who left us, suddenly and prematurely, in November.

May their souls, and the souls of the all the faithful departed, rest in peace.

  19. Paul great piece on the Celtic way of life. Great to see that Lou Macari is keeping that spirit alive in England where he is reaching out to those in need. ‘

My granny was born at 335 Gallowgate in 1882 and went to school in St Mary’s. I often wonder if she was feed at the table that Bro Walfrid set out.

Thats the thing David, I could never get enjoyment from watching that type of negative football. I think I found that all the more remarkable.

I believe that football must be enjoyable and entertaining, that’s why I appreciate the Ange journey ( flaws an all )

I like calls like that because it enforces my belief that we are entitled to nothing. Any achievements must be worked fairly and within the rules unlike a certain other mob.

    Cheers and HH.

  22. A very appropriate article from Paul67 today, and one with which I am in full agreement. I am a member of a U.S. C.S.C. that has made an annual charitable donation every year of its existence. The recipients have included the Foundation ( for the 67 African schools ), the homeless, an orphanage, a food bank, the blind, a Celtic fan who lost his house in the Texas floods and many, many others. As Treasurer, I was always astounded by the members’ generosity, which was part personal trait, part CSC tradition, and part Celtic Founding Fathers history.

A Merry Christmas from me to all on here. SAINT, a couple of good posts from you today. I will defer comment on them until after Christmas. Also, SAINT please note I ( like many others ) am still having email issues on all my Apple devices since the last Microsoft update. This is why I have not been in touch with you privately.

Huftae scoot noo. Wifie is demanding assistance with preparing the house for the annual invasion of her relatives tomorrow, and my idea of raising the portcullis has been formally rejected.

  23. The penultimate round of Superbru predictions, before we hand out our first set of prizes, saw a clear win by one of our contendors= Hopeful Hoops with a gealthy, but not record breaking, 13 points. Quadrophenian and raploch bus were 2nd and 4rd respectively.

The wooden spoon this round goes to Friesdorfer who drew a blank.

Overall, with one round to go, Call me Herry has a 3 point lead from Bhoy from the Village, who is half a point ahead of Big Archie with Bateen Bhoy and Hopeful Hoops just 5 points behind our leader. I suspect our first winners will come from this bunch.

Holding the overall wooden spoon is wee BGFC but Gaxbhoy is only a point above with Park Road 67 10+ clear of those two.

There are 6 fixtures set for Boxing Day, so plenty of scope for surprises and change. Predictions need to be in by 12.30 on Boxing Day- so maybe do them now. Prizes will be announced once the last December game is played.

Many thanks for your continued support and good luck to those in the hunt for prizes.
