We were hurting earlier this year.  Sentiment among the support, the players and the backroom staff was at floor level.  It felt like it was just you and me left.  Not for the first time, that was enough.  A year after 50,000 bought season tickets and did not get to see Celtic, they did so again, even though the world is not ready for many to mingle in just yet (Martin42 included).

Celtic is not our choice, it is us, as indistinguishable from who we are as our own image in the mirror.  Without that pull to support our club, especially when in need, it would have floundered many decades ago.  In the 1950s, Celtic was close to being eclipsed by Hibs, who had the players and recent trophies Celtic did not, with crowds on a par.  The years before 1965 were humbling for a generation some of whom still come to enjoy success like they once never dreamed.

The 1990s were no better.  Made to feel like foreigners in our own land, we looked to Celtic to provide a firm strain of identity.  We hung in there, at times by the skin of our teeth.  Then the new millennium brought glories not seen since Jock Stein’s great era.

We are a club born to raise funds for the needy.  That has been difficult over the last two years, with events precarious to plan and collections needing footfall that was often missing.  It is all the more remarkable that your Foundation broke new records this year, raising more money through it’s Christmas Appeal than ever.  What I see in the discrete and anonymous actions of Celtic fans is humbling.

People who would run a mile from drawing attention to their acts.  Many who clearly have little to give, giving anyway.  Others throwing £20 in a bucket and telling their pals to do the same.  If you ever want to feel humble, spend some quality time with Celtic fans.

Why do they do this?  As I said above, it is indistinguishable from who they are.  They are Celtic and this is what Celtic means.  It is an honour to stand among you.

    Well here we are again, the greatest birthday ever, oh and that question asked earlier about Jesus being a socialist, IMHO and I often say this the greatest socialists ever were our Blessed Lord and St Francis of Assisi, the latter did what Luther had aspired tae and reformed our Church, gave us the first ever Nativity scene complete with live animals.

     

     

    I’’m working at the 9:00 Mass this morning, we had 5 yesterday and 2 the day, all Masses are all ticket, at an average of 200 parishioners that’s almost 3 times the amount that will be over at Hades the morra.

     

     

    No better way tae bring Christmas in than celebrating the birth of our Saviour.

     

     

    So in saying that a Marry Christmas tae all readers on here and in the spirit of the occasion that includes all you hunterlopers.

    Thank you for your kind words…… but can I clear something up. Our Big Jimmy is not a donkey, but a very handsome ( of course) Gypsy Cob. And don’t worry about him being well looked after – Mrs S showers him with treats and attention as out of all the ponies he is numero uno in her books.

     

    And remember, the offer to pick you up and bring you down here to meet him, and all the others, still stands.

     

    You have yourself a very merry Xmas and try to leave some beer in the pipes for the part-time drinkers!

    When the time comes, I will travel to Dumfries by Train, I can get a taxi or maybe you can pick me up at the station…and take me to meet the donkeys and Ponies etc if your place is not too far away ?

     

    These days, I am not a good traveller but a train journey would be okay for me.

    Congratulations in order to NASA, ESA, Canada et al for successfully launching the James Webb Space Telescope via the Ariana 5 Rocket from French Guiana in South America on Christmas morn. Once operational it will be able to look so far back in space and time we will be able to see the original Rangers FC.

    Permanent winners of the Trophy named after Glasgow’s Patron Saint, Mungo in 1951.

    Coronated Kings in 1953 before Elizabeth R was even on the throne. And permanent Coronation Cup Holders.

    Not to mention the players signed to Celtic in that decade, Jock Stein early doors and latterly Bertie Auld and Billy McNeill, men key to our Scottish Cup win in 1965 and of course our greatest season in 1966-67.

     

    Humbling? Maybe, but not the way you see it…..

    You can get chocolate flavoured beer. It’s not as revolting as it sounds. Sort of Guinessy/porter/barley wine flavour. Strong too.

    Except the players. They should be concentrating on tomorrow’s game and so don’t need any yuletide distraction. Suggestions on KDS that they were out celebrating on Sunday night. Very disappointing if true.

    Was at the Real Madrid game in 1962. We were on our annual family holiday to Rothesay but my Dad took me back up the road, I was 7, to see the game, really can’t remember much about it. We caught the last train to Wemyss Bay and the Royal Mail boat back to Rothesay in the early hours. Think my Dad must have pre-arranged that and gave the guy an iron lung to take us over to the Island. por cierto
