Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

  1. DBBIA hope Izzy doesn’t have to walk the long walk. Best left back we had in decades. Maybe getting past it but a true Celt whatever the measure. Hope our next left back debate doesn’t go on for years like the last one.

So you are happy and satisfied with the present situation and set up at our club. All I can say is your easy pleased or daft.

  3. celtic are a thirdrate team and play in a thirdrate league and that’s our problem but our board are tenthrate mr lawell and mr desmond are pathetic and will kill the club, maybe mr desmond should look for a club with great traditions.

  4. I am Not Lurking Anymore on

I think Ronny’s downfall will be his stubbornness of continually playing a 4231 formation especially in Europe when it clearly isn’t working

He mixed it up a bit against Ajax & it was working until Izzy stupidly got himself sent off but we’re losing far too many goals down to basic mistakes Gordon,Efe,Boyata,Izzy, even big Lustig have all been culpable at times

I think the next couple of weeks till we play Molde at home will decide Ronny’s fate

As for Kris I think we all felt his frustration last night maybe he was unprofessional or maybe there’s an underlying issue a simple apology should be enough

  5. Yesterday I was told by the doctor that I had shingles. This statement was followed by a warning that I could suffer much pain over the course of the coming weeks. Well, if the pain of last night is anything to go by I am not anticipating the times ahead with any sense of joy

I watched last night’s game in utter disbelief that we could be so poor. I will not select any particular individual as having had a poor performance for in my estimation the whole team under performed.

Today I feel utterly drained by such an inept performance. I have followed my team as bhoy and man for over 65 years and had hoped for greater things this season. But alas it is not to be. Others have been reminding us that we still have games to play before it is decided where we will be by Christmas. This sounds like the assurance we were given that the Champions League would be a different ball game this time round. Then when we were knocked out of that Cup, we were told that things would be different in the Europa Cup. That will be a mere pipe dream soon. Of course, we should not let any of that bother us because we are going to win the League and we are still in two Cups according to some on here.

As supporters we have sat around speculating that it will all come right sometime. It seems to me that some of the fire that existed in the hearts and minds of the Fans for Change in the past has to be rekindled. Someone mentioned on here that even one of the Directors does not have a clue what the absentee landlord has in mind for Celtic. Surely if this is the case then Board and the shareholders need to tell the Golf loving 31% shareholder that he is not Celtic and a concerted effort should be made to oust him. I for one will not vote for his retention as a director at the next AGM. If only others could join in a concerted effort to tell him and his cronies that enough is enough.

  6. I asked this last night, but, what with all the angst and recrimination that was flying around, didn’t get a reply, so I’ll ask again.

Does anyone know the name of Molde’s CEO, and roughly how much he gets paid?

  7. I think the thing that really got under Commons skin was that Johansen remained on the pitch. That is what I think tipped him over the edge. The underlying message being how can you take me off and leave him on. Only my opinion of course.

  8. Timjim would be grateful if you could point out where Turkeybhoy has said he is “happy and satisfied” must have overlooked it ,thanks H H Hebcelt

  9. Turkeybhoy agree that there is a lot to play in Scotland, nothing won or lost. Whatever the result of our second round of EU games we have an elusive and difficult treble to aim for. If only we could be on the petrothingy cup. Been a lot darker days for the hoops but I do agree that we should be way more down the track than we are now. Some sort of change will happen.

  10. I don’t usually get to watch a lot of the midweek games in full, which tend to be European games, as they usually clash with my own teams training and/or games but due to injury i got to see last nights game in full. Unfortunately last night was the first time where I’ve really questioned our tactics and the set up of the team. Paul is bang on that our setup is too attack minded particularly when we have a weak defence. Dissecting each goal:

1st Goal: Molde were happy to let Boyata and Ambrose have the ball as they knew there was a high chance they would pass the ball away at some stage. Ronny should also know this and make sure we were more defensive minded to prevent a goal being conceded when it happened. It absolutely crazy to have both fullbacks pushed on so high. When one fullback is pushed on the other one should pretty much become a centre half with Ambrose and Boyata pushing across one place (working in affect, like window wipers on a car). When Boyata gave away possession Izzy should have been in the position where the ball was played through to the striker. We can only assume that Izzy and Lustig are under instruction to play this way.

2nd Goal: Once again conceded from a corner, which was recycled. Griffiths beaten too easily to the byline by their player who played a good cross into the box. Once again Griffiths at fault for conceding a goal from a corner. Why is Griffiths back defending corners? Probably our smallest and one of our fastest players, the ideal player to leave up front when defending corners. I asked myself who we were leaving up front instead of him when defending corners so I watched the highlights and couldn’t believe it when i counted 11 of our players defending a corner. How long has this been going on for? Its absolutely crazy to not have at least one of our players at the halfway line in order to start a counter attack. By defending like this, particularly when we play a zonal marking game, makes the box more congested and harder for our defenders to actually attack the ball. The more players we don’t have defending corners, the more players others teams will leave back to mark our players. Years ago I recall Jose Mourinho leaving 4 players up when defending a corner as he knew the other team would leave 5 players back to mark them.

3rd Goal: We basically conceded a goal on the counter attack from a tipoff. I didn’t think this was possible. Players totally at fault here, they inexcusably switched off after getting back into the game.

Scott Brown said after the game that the team didn’t show up. We’ve heard this too much now, he said the exact same after Malmo too. Why aren’t they showing up? The reports of discontent aren’t good and I hope if true Ronny can turn it around as I like him but the 1st two goals are basic tactical mistakes which don’t fill me with confidence that our management team has the knowledge to turn it around.

Anyway, at times like this it a time where the club needs our support most. Get behind Ronny and the team on Sunday. Hopefully we can win our next 2 homes games in the Europa League.

No idea how old you are,but I have been through much worse.I watched the Huns take us apart game after game,in the early 60s.No investment in the team at all.Watched us sign,Bobby Craig,Hugh Maxwell,Paddy Turner,to try and compete with Baxter,Henderson, etc.I was still there every week, home and away.

I remember,as I said last night,Politechnica,Neuchatel,Artmedia,Utrecht,Sion, shameful performances in Europe.Did not stop me going every opportunity to Celtic Park.

    Daft?.If you think the words “Faithful through and through””We dont care if we win,lose,or draw”mean nothing,and I do,then I own up,I am daft.OK.

The main comparison with John Barnes is that neither RD or JB has the capability to acheive the required result – as inexperienced idealistic youngsters they dont have the knowledge, experience or gravitas. I still agree with the Ronny experiment, last year was correctly identified as the time for Celtic PLC to do it but the trial runs are at an end. Also the experiment has to have minimum acceptable measurements – Win the SPL, make progress in Europe or set us on the path to better success and SHOW progress in Europe.

The trial runs are at an end. Theres only so much you can learn on the job. Its not looking like any learning has been done in Europe. Would Ronny benefit from an experienced assistant? An older hand? In Europe the coaching staff look ill-equipped for the task im afraid.

I’m concerned that we dont seem to be gathering momentum and they have had time to do so.

  20. Football is different now from sixties

Today it is all about Europe

    That’s where the income is

We have not invested for Europe and been punished We have then sold players to make up part of the shortfall

We are in trouble now. No family silver to sell next year

  21. Lots of words written last night and today.

Some happy clapping head up to waste in sand stuff (how do they manage that amazing trick) still apparent.

There is only one word to say about our club ap[plication of football skills, tactics, runningof football department form board level down to playing and that is…

Na wait! I can’t type that word.

So instead here is a rant.

Downsizing across the board, the buying many to find a gem instead of paying for a gem so the gem can be sold to balance the books over buying a gem to help secure the funds available from Champions League Qualification is a failed policy and will continue to be a failed policy. The fact theat this policy is lining the pockets of Peter the Bonus collector adds insult to injury.

Time for a complete rethink of the strategy. I imagine the current strategy was devised by Peter the Bonus collector and sold to Dermot the Golfer and because in the first few years it seemed to work it is a plan worth sticking to. Liek our manager it appears our owner is incable of changing his tactics likely because of sound advice from Peter the Bonus collector.

I know were I’d shove hid friggin bonus. right up the Four King erchies of all the happy clappers who’s be delighted to then use their dirty proceeds to cheers on all the more deleriously.

We keep hearing from some of the waist deep head in sand happy clappers about how many successful business men we have on our board.

But if these same successful business men ran the main product into the ground in their normal business roles the way our very successful business men are doing with our football department they wouold be ran out of dodge with a firework detonating up their arses.

Time to stop combing your tash, playing golf, talking about your favourite soo side Zombies Dermot and get your finger out of your Appendix (yes it is that far up your arse) and demand your CEO devises another policy that incorpoprates footballing success over Bonus collecting fever.

Absolutely astounded of forehead at the ineptitude from top to bottom at our club from owner to professional footballer.

Keep going as it’s going and the day is not far away were there won’t be an asset to manage the books and the downsizing will be in freefall proportions. A little investment in the right areas of the team with a focus on quality over quantity would be a damn good start allied with a new contract for Peter the Bonus collector placing his bonus at the mercy of footballing success equally to that of profit and loss.

I could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on…

But I am just plain sickened to the core with the destruction of what our club built up this last 15 years.

    MWD said Ah bulger it!!!!

  22. I knew there would be a lot of ppl calling for Ronny’s head but I’m surprised at quite how many on here.

Some perspective – 2 of our 3 performances in this group have been very encouraging. Once Simunovic beds in there’s a chance we might have something resembling a defensive unit again.

I’m not shying away from how disastrous last night was, but we can afford to give him at least a few months to turn this around

When one fullback is pushed on the other one should pretty much become a centre half with Ambrose and Boyata pushing across one place (working in affect, like window wipers on a car). – ——

Spot on pal. If the ball is at one side it can’t be at the other.

Full-backs (not just ours) get caught out too often like this. Ashley Cole was the best back post full-back I have seen.

Brown and Bitton were both well into Molde’s half. One of the DMs has to stay back a bit.

  25. I have the game recorded but doubt I will watch it, I have seen it all too often before.

I use to think Kevjungle and Sydneytim were drama queens, but they have warned us few years ago about the downsizing and it is scary what we have become.

I was a massive Ronnie fan and still believe his methods have a place at Celtic but he nor his staff have the experienced needed to beat teams in Europe.

Takes balls to bring in big manager and hand him decent budget.. We don’t have that. The yearly gamble before our CL qualifiers backfires all to often.

As bad as we are I’d gladly never see a transfer window again because we never seem to come out of it as strong as we went into it.

What a mess up its been in the absence of the dirty Huns.. Should have been better.

  26. Turkeybhoy you are right that things at celtic have been far worse than this. When they were the last time the support had to rebel to get regime change.

This time we had all the advantages, all the opportunities. The most hurtful thing about this time is that its all so wasteful and needful and this time we did it all to ourselves. Our boards ineptidude and single minded pursuit of money for DD has led us here.

Our board are arrogant, corrupt, lazy and contemptous of the support. They have no interest in football results. None.

The battered bunnett. I think you will find that I didnt blame Paul for our malaise. What I said is that he has played his part. And he has. He has espoused the nonsense that is moneyball as a coherent strategy. Now he says nothing about it. He was so delighted about Ronny’s appointment – Ronny is proving disasterous. We have sold all the family silver, not replaced it or even tried to. We had all the we will spend every penny on the squad changed to every penny on the club.

Thing is – Paul is not beyond criticism. He has espoused the virtues of the boards so called strategy for over a decade – and avoids the things that go wrong. So he should expect to be called out on it.

Paul is connected to the board so if even a small part of the sense of anger on CQN gets to the board it can only be a good thing.

  27. The experiment has failed, the downsizing has won.Lawwell will try to put 50 quid on Season Tickets, for Sevco being promoted. Is that going to fly, with Deila in charge? No.Change it now,we need a strong experienced manager to deal with the Mibbery which will come next season.Paul Lambert, assisted by Petrov and Sutton would do for me.Yes,they will be more expensive than of late, but austerity has got us to this stage of the game.We are not learning from the basic mistakes we make against very mediocre European teams, who have a fraction of our budget (even through the downsizing),from leagues’ similar,or weaker to ours. The blame ultimately lies at the door of Peter Lawwell.
