Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

As a mineshafter,he is a mere beginner. As a Celtic supporter though,he has earned his right to comment.

It is your right to disagree, but ad hominem is not a good way to go about it.

Still two home games to come, great chance for 6 points, but no,get the burning torches out,and march on Celtic Park now.Shower of spoilt bassas. Its a defeat away from home,FFS.We have had hundreds before,we will get them again. So many on here like to get on their high horse and decry the Huns for their sense of entitlement.Just what is this?.

We are not out of the tournament, not in this group. We are top of the league,in the two cups. Not good enough for many.Every day they come on here, telling us we have downsized disgracefully, then, react to a defeat as if we were Barcelona.

I will wait and see what happens after the next two home games. How will the “Drama Queens”react if we qualify?.They will disappear as usual.Until the next time.

Far too many with their own wee agendas on here.Sad to say,a result like last night, and Celtic takes second place to their crowing about how right they were.

Your point about John Barnes is a good one. Leaving his high opinions of himself out of it,he was very much in need of support from the people who appointed him.

    He didn’t get it.

    Neither has RD.

In Barnes’ case, the money was there to buy the players he wanted, but the assistance in managing-unforgivably-wasn’t.

With RD,he has been told to get on with it,accept the players given to him. Coach them, that’s why I employed you.

Different types of assistance required from above, same dereliction of duty from the suits.

Shocking Pitch last night which looked like an ice rink-but no excuse

Probably the worst performance i’ve seen in a long while- we are going backwards and never looked like winning

Up until now I have been hoping Ronnie can turn it round but last nights tactics and the commons substitution (1 of only 2 players that were playing well) has put the writing on the wall

We are not far off a Mowbray 5-0 drubbing and its down to tactics not players- we were a disorganised team that looked unfitter than a team at the end of their season-shocking display!!

  21. Paul

    Sorry I cant agree

This was don to poor team selection and poor players in key positions and in particular starting Efe at the heart of the defence.

I posted before the game it was bordering on wreckless starting him against a counter attacking team.

Should the management continue to select him I would now say that’s bordering on a sackable offence.

  22. Dexter says PAY THE LIVING WAGE CELTIC PLC on

“Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this.”

Is this a serious analysis, Paul? No professional (Celtic) player should be BOUND to mess up. If they are, they should not be near the team, regardless of tactics.

“Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.”

This represents an ignorance of the individual players’ responsibility. They are very well paid, in a privileged position. Had they not committed these individual errors, the goals would not have been scored.

“If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.”

This is nonsense. If we had played with the same tactics in Ajax, that does not preclude the likelihood that inadequate players would have made mistakes to negate any tactical decisions.

Further, why does any Celtic fan think for a second that no Molde player would get in the Celtic squad? Patently, the Molde players had more steel, more team spirit and some had no little talent. The arrogance of some supporters and this post is incredible.

Ambrose is nowhere near Celtic standard. Ditto Johansen on current form, ditto Boyata, Ciftci, Mulgrew.

We neither have a good manager nor sufficient good players.

Commons’ outburst is indicative of the fact that the players can see the blindingly obvious.

We should also stop deluding ourselves.

    Downsizing is wrecking our club

Who gives a monkeys if there’s 2 home games left! The team is rotten, management clueless and the board not interested in what us fans think! I don’t see any of what was promised from deila in regards of fast flowing, attacking football. The team is not fitter, the tactics are shocking and there is no plan b. Celtic should not be losing to a 7th placed team in the Norwegian league and the board has downsized to the extent that shite teams are happy to be drawn against us! It’s not acceptable!

  24. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Whatever shortcomings hoopslegend Efe Ambrose has as a footballer he has seamlessly filled the scapegoat role previously filled by hoopslegend Giorgios Samaras.

Although this season hoopslegend Emilio Izaguirre looks like he could well end up joining him in the desert.

  25. Paul, to say none of the Molde players would get in the Celtic team sounds very arrogant.

Do you think any of their fans are desperate to swap any of their players with even one of ours?

I think we need to face up to the fact that – despite astronomical wages – many of our players aren’t actually very good.

  26. I’m in agreement that RD doesn’t seem to have the ability to change things when it goes pear shaped.

What I am not in agreement is that Efe was at fault last night, I have seen the goal over and over again, he couldn’t make up the ground in time, yet he is taking the flack, a few weeks ago, I read on here he was to blame for a goal when he wasn’t even on the pitch.

I saw many posts criting the choice of defence, VvD and Deneyer have left.

Hysteria would have been making the same calls after Legia/Maribor last year.

Now? Things have moved on, the team is poorly set up, the managers refusal/inability to change things at home to Maribor when things were clearly not going well was a costly mistake and one which has been repeated a number of times, he doesn’t know his best 11, he has stuck by individuals who you can bank on to make costly mistakes(this is not a ‘phase’ these players are going through), and players are being signed almost by committee because he is not strong enough to insist otherwise.

When we’re ahead we don’t know how to protect it and when we’re behind we crumble.

Rip it up and start again.

  28. Turkeybhoy not everyone in the Southern Hemisphere is on the glass half empty ticket so geez a break . Sydney take a look in the mirror mate, don’t see you on when we win so might just be how you deal with disappointment but it looks bad mate, even when you have things to say. The model us not working , plain to see, we need two strikers more goals and less bombscares. Some sort of change is inevitable. The bar is European progression nothing less though I am still excited about being in three cups at home. Hearts midweek is as big a game as they get. We are all hurting so play the ball not the player troops. Hail hail. Championees.

For a start,we get into the real world. You know that world where every team gets beat.Sometimes through bad tactics, sometimes through bad play.Sometimes when nearly every player loses everything he has been coached since 15,in the one game.

We dont call for everyone to be sacked, and boycotts of the club.Unlike many,I have no great illusions that we will ever go far in any European competition .Not the way the game is now.We get on with what we have.We win leagues and cups, and we support the team we all profess to love. There are Billionaire clubs struggling to do well in Europe.Dont think one of those clubs will be getting the abuse ours is getting. You think Spurs fans are on today calling for Pocchetinos head?.

I said earlier, far too many with agendas, including you,on here nearly gloating on that defeat last night. It somehow justifies their dislike of RD,they have held since the beginning.Very sad to say,but I believe it.

I am no uber fan,but I cant wait for Sunday,to see the team I love play again. You say you were there when 15,000 was the crowd. You should know we had much worse times than this.

We are still in this group.6 points from the two home games, will give us a chance. After all of the hysteria, how will you and the others feel if we get through? If we dont, life goes on,a treble to be won.
