Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

I pointed out last night that three players came out after Ronnie labelled them scared and did not accept his criticism. Brown, Commons, Gordon.

All three have been very poor.

Gordon said that we were not good enough.

    So who is right ?

And who will the plc back ?

  2. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

You’re dreaming if you think Celtic being poor in Europe will result in a change of manager.

    Never happened before.

heard that and thought he sounded more clueless than he is, if that’s possible.

we try to play 3 No. 10’s behind a striker. and we cant get a ball to any of them as our 2 defensive mids and

defence pass sideways for an eternity before firing a rocket forward which rebounds off one of them to an opposing player.

any time a full back gets in range of crossing he hoofs it out the park.

Only answer. Get shot of this deadbeat now. And bring in a Manager who knows what he is doing.

What worries me is that he somehow thinks that we had other forwards on there last night. Who ? Bitton ? Brown ? Johanssen ? What we had was Griffiths trying to pick up scraps and Commons providing a goal out of nothing, which he’s capable of even when he’s not playing great. It was a quite remarkable statement and gives us an insight to his way of thinking.

23rd October 1971…it was another bad day, ‘a day to forget’ we will always remember…

  14. Hi Paul67,

Haven’t been on for a wee while, so nice to see the blog rate has picked up.

From yesterday… Sad news about Johan Cruyff, a true gift to Football, from his sublime skills through La Masia to a Master tactician a true Football legend… The best ever, overall, quite possibly.

Talking of master tacticians, as you clearly point out, all is not well with Celtic Glasgow…

We are playing a good system, that’s mirrored throughout the squads, we seem to be making some real progress in our player development but, and it’s a big but, we are seeing far to many below par displays.

Players performances, tactics and application, all woefully inadequate.

We have Jim McGuinness, why no bite?

But of course it doesn’t end there, the fact was that Ronny was approached as a number two, a job he would have excelled at in my opinion. Especially if he got the remit of overseeing the development squad and Academy, which, let’s face it, Lenny didn’t seem interested in after his promotion.

Our next manager needs to be at one with the ethos now at the club, but needs to have the tactical nouse at the highest level and be able to inspire players to give of there best.

Too many shirts shrunk in the Norwegian rain.

    Hail Hail

  15. Sick and tired even thinking of last night’s game so thought I’d have a wee look at the AGM notice received last week.

One thing struck me about the way the club us run as I looked at the remuneration report.

The remuneration committee have detailed exec salaries and bonuses.

In PL’s case he can qualify for a bonus up to 60% of base salary if all KPI’s met or exceeded.

The remuneration committee decided this year that PL had done such an outstanding job that his bonus should be further increased and that he was given a bonus payment of 74% or another £80k above the planned maximum. Yet again his overall package was managed to not hit the magic million pounds. Two years in a row at K£999 plus odds.

Let’s look at the results for the 2015 fiscal year.

    Turnover…substantially down

    Year on year profit……down

    Champions League participation….No

    Match day attendance….Falling

Question. How the hell did PL ever reach his original bonus let alone being given an extra K£80?

  16. Chairbhoy

do you think that the quality of player and coach at CP nowadays are fit enough to wear eveb a shrunken shirt

  17. And now I can see it all –

    1. Commons appologises for showing passion

2, People on here say DUD Deila ” has a lot to learn ”

The team I have followed for 50 years should show no passion and take on apprentice managers.Have we really had the wool pulled this far over our eyes?

A true sign of madness is repeating the same pattern and expecting different results.

There is nothing more dangerous than someone who can never admt they are wrong.

Our management team fall into both catagories.

  18. oneofthe70percent on

Well everything wen,t as I suspected last night, almost every game away in Europe has been similar,Tactics does he h sighted ave any, sticks to a losing formula at half time,no subs no change of tactics same boring boring football, pass back pass sideways pass back again, midfield gets run over like it does not exist, why have the board put up with this, should have sacked our so called manger ages ago, last nigh was the equivalent of losing 4-1 against st mirren and Mowberry was gone next day,but Ronnie roar(wtf is that all about) is still manager.the players look gutless, but the board are the one,s that are really gutless and won,t sack the bastard ,because it will cost too much to replace him with a proper manager, just their short sightedness ,lost about 30-40 million pounds in CL money over last 2 seasons ,plus who knows how much in lost revenue from falling crowds and season book sales, oue Ceo is supposed to be a buisness man(in other words a tory bastard),but cannot see that buisnesses have to speculate to accumulate, change needed in boardroom and ownership Desmond is not a proper celtic man you never see him,too busy following fuckin rugby golf and man u;he can bugger off asap.

Not for me at all mate. Was a great player but don’t think he has it as a manager. Too mental. Where do we go though ? Back to an ex Celtic player (Moyes, McCarthy, Lambert) or stick with RD and hope for the best ? I really don’t know but don’t have much confidence in our present manager.

Got a text from my PTFC pal this morning commenting re how much he likes 23 / 10.

Wasn’ t 100 % bad – I went to a great party in Garnethill after the game..

  21. mike in toronto on

As usual, I seem to swimming against the CQN tide ….

I dont think our defence was the real problem last night ….. (I’m not saying it was great … it wasn’t …. and everyone knows that I like Izzy, but think he is a liability ….but I dont think our defence was the key or only problem last night …)

As usual, it was the midfield and forwards that did what the always do … little or nothing.

Too often, we get the ball, move it slowly sideways and backwards, while our forwards run forward, stop dead, turn back to the goal, and wait for (a) a defender to mark them, and (ii) pass the ball backwards when they do get it. So we end up with effectively 6 at the back and 4 attackers, spread out but standing still along the 18 yard box …. no movement equals no chances.

compare this to our opposition …. when we lost the ball, the other team moved into space, and balls were passed into space for players to take on the move forward, and they could have scored more than they did.

When our defenders move forward with the ball, get closed down, but no one moves into a passing lane to receive a pass (except backwards).

Admittedly, it has to be tough for our defenders when they get little help …. last year, VVD and Boyata were comfortable bringing the ball forward and starting plays… which took a lot of the pressure off the midfield … without them, our midfield are now being asked to do their job, and are failing miserably at it. only movement is sideways and backwards….

you wont create any chances standing still and/or passing sideways ….

I Know we gave up some soft goals… but I dont think it is fair to single out young inexperienced defenders who are being hung out to dry by their teammates … RD’s system requires the mids and the outside 2 of the 3 to help out, but they are leaving the defence exposed to pacey counterattacks.

The whole idea of the 4231 system is that your 3 defend from the front … they aren’t doing that (or much of anything else, frankly).

This isn’t a defence problem … it is a team problem.

  22. We get ourselves back into it at 2-1,

their right winger runs down the wing and 5 Celtic players run towards him abandoning the centre of the box to the opposition,

schoolboy does not begin to cover it,average school boys would not make such a mistake,

as stylian petrov observed last night, players werefocused on the ball and unaware of everything around them,

I sooooooooooo want ronnie to succeed but there needs to be a serious clear the air meeting ,,I am delighted kris apologised but something IMHO is wrong with player moral.

  23. mike in toronto on

actually, to be fair … I should have said ‘this isn’t a defence problem … it is a team (including coaching) problem)….

  24. Skimmed back, phewww, a lot of angry bhoys on and who can blame them after watching that dross, even the Huns in work left me alone today! Ye, that bad.

One question, after the signing of Carlton Cole will RD persist wth one up front or be man enough to play two up front with LG?

  25. Sipsini

    gooooooooood afternoon

was just discussing that very point with a friend,

    we’ll see.

  26. mike in toronto on

    sipsini

dont think it matters … we actually play almost with 4 upfront now … but no movement simply means 4 along a congested 18 yard box and no chances ….removing 1 of the 3 and going 2 ”up front’ is, for me, rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship ….. this team has to be taught to move and pass …. if we can do that, there are goals in this team, regardless of the formation.

  27. 67 European.

    We’ll never know.

Roy Keane was the ‘big name’ at the time unfortunately for him with no credentials on his CV, certainly nothing like Ronny Deila’s managerial League win, in what turns out to be, not so much of a ‘wee diddy league’ as some make out.

Ronny Deila is a better singer than Roy Keane, he’s better looking, and he could dance the pants off Roy Keane.

  28. MULLET AND CO 2 on 23RD OCTOBER 2015 1:34 PM

CQN back to its best in adversity.

One of the other things we need to fix is the first team coaches salary. Derk Boerrigter earns more than twice the salary of Deila. How can you be in charge of that? Then you have CEO/ director of football on 3 times your salary. A director of football with an accounts qualification into the bargain.

    The manager makes the club.

The Derk situation sums up much of what is wrong at Celtic.

In saying this, I in no way criticise the player or his agent for grabbing the money when it was offered.

The question is just who sanctioned, and why did they sanction, spending what for Celtic was big money, on a player who was widely touted as being injury prone and being of an age where there was little prospect of recouping the money.

I make no apologies for asking again, just who gets what from transfer dealings?
