Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

  1. Turkeybhoy, so because you’ve seen worse everyone has to shut it?. I have never criticised or questioned our coaching team since arrival, but last nights performance was so inept that questions have to be asked. And yes Heb he WAS definitely strongly implying that he was happy and satisfied without saying the exact words. Totally right about the people who come on only to slag celtic (and always appear after a bad result), but again how do they blind you to an abject performance?. I’ll be there on Sunday, as always, but i’ll still question the team/coaches/owner/execs after two years and very little improvement(if any in Europe?). “Faithful through and through” not an unquestioning (hunlike?) money box!.

Last night’s debacle was nothing to do with the tactics. Nor the players, manager, defensive coach or chairman.Nor the weather conditions or the artificial pitch. The whole sorry episode was the result of nothing more than the stupid and completely unnecessary “change kit”.

Why oh why weren’t we wearing the Hoops?

I’d love to see a list of our most humiliating European results of the last 10 years, with details of what kit we were wearing on each occasion, and the comparative stats for European away fixtures wearing the Hoops and otherwise. I’m fairly confident that there would be a significant difference in the relative outcomes.

If the opposition isn’t wearing shirts with horizontal stripes/hoops in white and another colour, then we should always wear the Hoops. Not only does this look better to the fans, but it makes the players more visible to one another during a game (particularly when they are afforded just a split second to control and release the ball), and I believe it would ensure that the players actually fight harder to do the famous shirts justice.

Join my campaign to have Celtic use just two shirts: A first choice shirt of green & white Hoops, and a second choice shirt of white & green Hoops.

On a serious note, I thought that there was a lot of relevant and useful information in WGS’s post-match analysis last night. He knows a heck of a lot more about the game and players than I ever will. And the crux of it is that whatever the team line-up, tactics, or conditions, once the referee blows his whistle, the performance of the team and of individual players is the responsibility of those players.

Nothing Deila did made Boyata play a simple pass straight to an opponent prior to the first Molde goal, justified Lustig being AWOL at right back for their second goal, or put the whole team to sleep for 45 seconds after Commons’ short lived lifeline. Only the players can explain those blips.

    Now where’s that sofa…

Its not about last nights result or whether or not we qualify, it’s about the bigger picture. For example are we improving as a team or are we going backwards ? Is the manager demonstrating that he his learning from his experiences and improving our tactics to achieve results.

We do not hate Ronny, what we don’t get is the inability to learn from his experiences and mistakes. If you see things differently then fine but we are all entitled to our views.

  8. Great comments from KC.I did not disagree with him, last night, but good to see him put the team first.I can understand how he felt.He gets us.Onwards to the next games.

  9. KRIS Commons has today apologised following last night’s UEFA Europa League match against Molde in Norway.

The Celtic midfielder said: “I’d like to apologise for my reaction last night, something that should never be shown publicly on the field.

“I was very frustrated at how the night had gone. However, I did not handle this in the right way. My frustration at losing games and my desire to win will never change.

“I know we are all part of a team at Celtic and I am proud to be part of this team. I want this team to win and I am sure we can come together, work hard and get the results needed to qualify from this group.

“I still have every confidence we can do this and in a fortnight we have the chance to make amends. That’s the motivation now for us all.”

I am sure some will see this as spin. Why not take his word. Up to the players to prove themselves worthy. Let’s leave the hand wringing until the group stages are over. Get behind the hoops for what’s left of a long season before sharpening the knives. I really hope he KC gets to make amends for the team . We need it man.

  11. Disagree completely – no celtic player would get in the Molde team. We are just awful and need a complete revamp from top to bottom, starting with that clown Deila

    2) Domestic competition results and trends

“The decline in Scottish clubs’ performance in UEFA competitions is evident, with their ranking dropping from 11th to 23rd.”

The drop in Scotland’s coefficient over last decade is the second worst of all UEFA nations (12 places). Only Latvia, who have dropped 14, fared worse

In comparison of coefficient over last five years and average spend of four largest clubs in Scotland in the period, Scotland deemed to be severe underachievers

UEFA club coefficients over last decade

    Create line charts

Neil Doncaster: “If we are to reverse the trend, then clearly it is important that we have a number of clubs qualifying for the group stages of European competitions each season.”

In summary: The argument over the reasons for Scotland’s declining coefficient is heard every year after our clubs are dumped out of the UEFA Europa League in the qualifying rounds. But the alarming trend over the past decade further highlights just how bad things have got.

Scotland’s performance, compared to the money on offer to our clubs on average, is shown to be of an exceptionally poorer standard than those with fewer resources.

    3) General revenue trends and comparisons

“Revenues of Scottish clubs have fallen, on average, by 25% over the last five years

    12 of Europe’s top 15 leagues have seen revenue growth. Portugal (-€6m, £4.35m) and Denmark (-€4m, £2.9m) haven’t, Scotland see massive €50m (£36.3m)* decrease

€m per club increase is down €4.2m (£3.1m)

The aggregate club revenue for top flight clubs in Scotland in 2014 was €147m (£106.7m)

The average club revenue was €12.3m (£8.9m)

Scotland’s average club revenue is strong – the 13th best in Europe

In summary: It will come as no surprise that revenues of Premiership clubs on the whole have fallen over the last five years, particularly with Rangers’ exit from the competition. Teams have however, as analysis later on will demonstrate, cut their cost base accordingly across the board. Despite the fall, club revenues on average in Scotland remain strong compared to other European nations of similar stature.

    4) Detailed revenue trends and comparisons

The European average breakdown is 34% domestic broadcasting, 8% UEFA prize money, 25% sponsorship, 16% gate receipts, 8% commercial and 9% other

Scotland’s mix is 13% domestic broadcasting, 15% UEFA prize money, 34% gate receipts, 32% sponsorship and commercial, and 6% other

I’ve no idea who he is. I suspect most Molde fans probably don’t know either.

    The point is twofold.

    1. As with almost all clubs the CEO is someone who just gets on with running the business, operating in the background. A low key, almost anonymous figure. That’s how it should be. Celtic is an exception and appears, going by footballing results to be dysfunctional.

    2. Board loyalists generally respond to demands for change with ‘Name one person who could replace Peter Lawwell. Just one name. See, you can’t name one. Peter Lawwell is irreplaceable.’

Well perhaps we could compile a list of the CEOs of the various clubs who’ve gubbed us in Europe over the last few seasons. And knowing how much they are paid might be enlightening too.

One of the other things we need to fix is the first team coaches salary. Derk Boerrigter earns more than twice the salary of Deila. How can you be in charge of that? Then you have CEO/ director of football on 3 times your salary. A director of football with an accounts qualification into the bargain.

  23. Watching Celtic in Europe now is akin to going to the movies, full of anticipation of going to the big event but once you get there your sorely disappointed by the fare on offer, but now and again your going to get a performance you are going to rave about

Going to watch Celtic in the Scottish league now is akin to going to watching re-runs of old B movies.it appeals to a niche audience who are going to rave about whatever ever pish they are served up so as just to be part of the in crowd

This rot set in years ago when in a position of power we had a cabal of directors who were more interested their own self interests rather than investing in players and an infrastructure that would have seen us keep pace with the improving European game. We enjoyed a brief period of respite when the club was taken over by a confirmed capitalist who set us on the right road and then left when he thought he could offer no more. Unfortunately the capitalists in charge of the club now neither have the vision or the business acumen of the previous incumbent

No Celtic manager has ever lost his job due to poor European results.

I think many of you are getting carried away.

Lets hear it for the Ronnie Roar

  26. Turkeybhoy

I get your point and for some the glass is half empty permanently.

For me, I think it’s right to question our managers ability to move forward and personally I think he has had ample opportunity to demonstrate he has what it takes.

We are losing to sides who are able to identify our weaknesses and exploit then far too easily and let’s be fair we are not talking about the cream, as we all know Molde, 7th in the Norwegian league, they strolled it and it could have been 5 or 6.

Ronny has a good football mind and often articulates the issues very accurately, his problem in my view is that he is unable to then take action to sort the issues. I feel he would have made a great number 2.

Importantly I don’t hate him but do want a change.

  27. For me its a simple as this. Is Deila getting the best out of the players at his disposal? For me the answer is No. Man for man we have better players than Legia, Molde, Maribor, Malmo etc.

I had been supporting Deila up until now but it’s now obvious he is tactically clueless. We can get by against Scottish teams but are ruthlessly exposed in Europe. And its not even the top clubs that are embarrassing us its teams with a fraction of our resources.

It’s time to start looking for another manager now so he can build for next seasons CL qualifiers and prepare for a sterner challenge in the league next season against Sevco . As I can’t honestly say I would be confident of Deila being able to win the legaue over a hamstrung Zombies.

I’d be looking at MIchael Laudrup who is currently out of work with Morten Weighorst beside him . Laudrup was on £700k at Swansea which shouldn’t be beyond our price range. If he’s not interested I’d be sounding out Paul Lambert.

  28. Still furious – not about last night – about the last X years.

    We are Glasgow Celtic.

    We are Glasgow Celtic.

The team that took the more fans ever to and oversea Cup final in Seville.

    What have we become ?

A team unwilling to invest enough to compete in the Europa League losing to the 7th best team in Norway.

    Really ? Really ?

We currently have nothing short of vandalism happening within our club. Excuse after excuse, English money, Sky deal, and on and on.

The fact is that we have a CEO who is chasing his annual performance bonus, driven by financial performance. However what he needs to realise is that the “customers” are switching off.

Summer signings , Ciftci, Janko, Allan, Simunovic, Christie (OK Ryan gets an exception), Blackett have managed a collective number of games that you could count on your fingers and toes. Boyata plays but is a massive downsizing from Virgil.

The manager is a lovely guy, but has no clue how to set-up a defence. Are we going to wait another 10 months until we fail to qualify for the Champions League again before we take action ? John Collins has been a controversial figure in every club he has played. In fact the manner in which he left Celtic and subsequent comments should have ruled him out of ever being employed by us again.

We have 2 Billionaires on our board and no interest in the club. The “owner” is so out of touch that his public utterances ( at a golf event ) talk about Celtic and Rangers – really ???? He is so far removed from the fans its scary.

Our total fear of the press is disgusting. In Europe every national press cheerlead for their champions except in Scotland – what do we do….Advertise for Radio Clyde… Really ??? They hate us and sell on the back of negativity on Celtic.

We need changes top to bottom , ambition and a recognition that the fans are leaving but are still there desperate to return should be the driving factor. Most of the Seville fans are still alive and would return in a heartbeat.

Either change the CEO or make is compensation entirely driven by progress in Europe and attendances. ( Attendances drive revenue).

Take a totally different position with the press , be fair and balanced or we well use our Celtic Media to talk to support.

Stop playing along with the great liquidation lie. We suffered as a result of SFA cheating – stand up for our club.

Hire Brendan Rodgers with a mandate to compete in Europe.

Sign a player we have heard of.

Stop treating fans like “Customers” fans are fans for life not a 3- 5 year Directorship.

Speculate to accumulate. I am sure that there will be less than 25,000 in the ground on Sunday, this could be 60,000 if we excite the fanbase.

If we keep stumbling on as we are we are heading deeper into oblivion with under 20,000 in the Stadium.

The usual whipping boys were not the only ones at fault on that score it was a real team effort. We lacked imagination and looked very lacklustre all over the park,Brown and Bitton as poor as I have seen them. You expect to come on here and encapsulate MO’N’s tenure in light-grey Sunday, and no one to comment on such garbage?

    *eh only you

Suppose you think of Jock Stein’s years in terms of the Partick Thistle league cup final too?

*Naw coz he went out and bought a new goalie and striker, he didnae walk away.

Oh I know MON had personal problems, who disnae, workforce is full of punters who do and still have tae show up every day, but he was offered the opportunity to take a leave of absence and refused it, his shelf life was over and he knew it, once Henrick left his tea was oot. So why the clamour to bring him back. He wisnae prepared tae work for our team when life in the fast lane ended.

BTW I wisnae disappointed when Jock left, his shelf life was over tae and he also was a relatively successful national team manager.

Rangers(1872-2012), in season 2004-5, according to you, “nae cheatin’”.

*didnae say that, so stop trying tae put words in my mouth, it wisnae just cheatin that cost us the title, poor man management did.

Yet we took the financially doped cheats to the last 5 minutes of that season, before going on to lift the Scottish Cup a week later.

*SC, big deal, a snottery 1-0 against a poor arabs side who finished 9th in the table losing 18 games and shipping 58 goals that season.

As for MO’N, but last time I looked he had just beaten the World Champions ( no transfer budget in International Football, of course), a result which gives his present team a shot at qualification for Euro 2016 in a play-off.

*A German team who had already qualified, if Thomas Mueller had his shooting boots on it would have been different. Ireland won’t make Euro 2016, like Scotland they are a poor side.

And BTW I’m no anti-Irish like some on here, I have Irish citizenship, love my heritage, Northern Irish tae on my paternal grampa’s side, but don’t let it blind me to MON and NFL’s failings

Unlike you, I’ll cherish the best 5 years I’ve witnessed at Celtic Park since Stein, the titles, cups, return of European credibility, The green& whitewash, and Seville.

*I don’t deny MON being great at that time, but as I said his shell life was over.

As for Seville, forget all the great fans palaver; we lost FFS, just like Milan 1970.

A wee meal was being held for the party when they came back, Henrik Larsson refused to go, he said that he didnae celebrate losing, neither do I.

Efe is not a whipping boy in my eyes, Hes just not a good centre half. you are GUARANTEED at least one clear cut chance per game when he plays at centre half. That is totally unacceptable.

I agree 100%.The thing is,as you well know,if RD had played Blackett,or Lustig at CH,and the same outcome occurred,he would have got slaughtered on here.”Efe should have played. Why put in players out of position”.You know its true.I am no RD acolyte,he has a lot to learn, but sometimes, like last night, due to injuries,he could not put out the team he probably wanted.Sometimes “Clusterf—s happen.I have never seen Izzy or Lustig that bad.Added to the abysmal display from the CHs,that result was on the cards. If the four play to their best,it all changes.RDs tactics, had us 2-0 and 3-1 up against Malmoe.2-0 up against the Turks,1-0 up against Ajax.A series of stupid blunders, bad defending lost all the good work.In Malmoe,we had a shocking refereeing decision, rob us of a great chance to go through.

I for one am prepared to give him time.He has a lot to learn, like a lot of managers.Getting a steady back 4 will help, something that has not been easy.
