Wherewithal to even come second in doubt among the rest

258

Saturday was one of those days when your players descend from various corners of the globe to resume domestic duty with an away fixture – and win – while our nearest three rivals all lose at home after resting for two weeks.

Motherwell have now ‘done’ Aberdeen twice this season; more about them later in the week. Hibs may still finish second in the table, but pushing the champions all the way counts for nothing if you can be mugged at home by a St Johnstone team who had not scored in six games, picking up only a single point in the process. Hibs are better than this, but Neil Lennon needs to find the consistency sauce. Second place is there for whoever gets their act together.

And what about Newco? Murty came so close. It’s been a year since they won three consecutive games and all regular interim manager Graeme Murty needed to do was beat Hamilton Accies at home and he would have broken through the glass ceiling. Unfortunately, the men from the SuperSeal Stadium are made of sterner stuff and gubbed their hosts 0-2.

Only one team has the wherewithal to win the title, but it doesn’t look like anyone else has the stomach for the battle for second place.

I don’t believe for a minute that if we go all-in for a half-arsed form of Independence that we will ever get rid of the Crown or the Bank of England fiscal control. We will have the worst for both worlds.

You have encapsulated, for me, the whole problem with the SNP standpoint on Independence:

    1. A clear water-tight policy on a Scottish currency has to be formulated

    2. Taxation to pay for equitable and robust services in an Independent Scotland is the the elephant in the room.

Until these are addressed everything else is, IMHO, on the back-burner. I wholeheartedly agree that Richard Leonard has a difficult job on his hands; however, the fact that the grass-roots Labour Party has elected him along with Jeremy Corbyn shows me that at least the activists know what needs to happen.

The other major concern is that, again IMHO, too many voters think that Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP are doing a reasonable job. The SNP have progressed due to the vacuum created by a ineffectual Scottish Labour Party. Hopefully that can now be addressed by an effective Scottish Labour Leader; the best since John Smith I reckon.

You’d think it was an international break with this discussion!

    Follow my train of thought:

I’m listening to the Ashes to Ashes (Season 2) soundtrack and Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight” comes on. I’m not a great Phil Collins fan but this is a good song and it makes me think of the Cadbury advert with the gorilla; for those who can’t remember or haven’t seen it, here it is.

That gets me thinking of the Gorilla Goes to Larkhall spoof which is hilarious.

In looking at that again for a laugh, I discover another spoof which I think is far more entertaining!

If you have 5 minutes, follow the 3 links (in order)and have a wee laugh!

Has the SFA decided that they can do no more for them?

Is it soon to be all over…….again?

I am becoming more convinced that the end will be due to natural causes, rather than from any outside intervention.

  14. Sad stories on here about Jophes’ niece’s baby and BRTH’s cousin to follow those from the last few weeks. Our next door neighbour’s best friend has just lost a granddaughter at just 3 months old to cancer. May they and their loved ones find some peace in their sadness.

    ————————————————————————-

I am a tennis fan and am saddened to learn of the death of Jana Novotna also from cancer at just 49 years.

She followed Martina Navratilova and Hana Mandlikova from Czechoslovakia. Navratilova was an all time great but never my favourite style of player but Mandlikova and Novotna were always great to watch and both achieved a fair amount of success.

Only 13 women have won the ladies singes title at Wimbledon since 1982*, Novotna being one when she beat Nathalie Tauziat and runner up twice after facing tougher opponents Steffi Graf and Martina Hingis. So she is part of a very exclusive list. Also she had 12 career Major doubles titles.

Mandlikova’s Majors successes came from Australia twice, French and US once and two Wimbledon final losses to Chris Evert/Lloyd and to Navratilova.

*Navratolova, Graf, Hingis, Novotna, Davenport, Serena and Venus, Martinez, Sharapova, Mauresmo, Kivitova, Bartoli and Muguruza

  17. Long post feel free to scroll by.

BRTH’s post of this morning, like so many of his posts, resonates profoundly with myself and my circumstance.

Jim articulates well the need for basic humanity and empathy for those troubled by whatever trial has been foisted upon them. He understands that we need care for others, not only those that we are aware of, but also to seek to understand that which we do not . BRTH is a good man!

I worked for almost 40 years with young people experiencing all types of special need; physical, emotional, educational and behavioural.

Not all of which I fully understood, e.g. my grasp of the complexities of living within the range of autistic spectrum difficulty increases daily as one encounters yet another , unconsidered aspect, a young person within this difficulty, has to routinely cope with.

However I have attempted to understand and support my pupils needs as best I could. I feel I did as best I could it most situations.

Working with young people with special needs was my chosen profession, even so I felt better for doing it.

Were we to follow BRTH’s lead we would all try to look to support others in our daily lives, being considerate and supportive. Often it is not easy to identity the exact need but with a little thought one can usually discern that there is one. Caring for one another is a basic human condition. One not to be left to others. It is much better than seeking fault in others. Indeed caring for others enhances one’s own life.

Seven weeks ago I was diagnosed as having pancreatic cancer. Two weeks today I undergo major surgery. The support, emotionally, physically, spiritually and practically I have received from friends has been invaluable. It has facilitated my pre op positivity.

From the outset, every waking moment, post diagnosis, has been shrouded in thoughts of what the possibilities were to be. While one attempts to proceed normally, it, the consequences of having cancer, is just always there.

While I fully accept the hand dealt me, I have managed to remain positive and strong due to the unbelievable support afforded me by my friends and family and I am confident of a positive outcome to this period in my life. Without the support of others I am not so sure.

However, it must be stressed that the support CQN friends, particularly BJMac, Bournesouprecipe and Goldstar10 has been enormously effective in maintaining my positivity. BSR and G10, practically walking me to optimum pre operational fitness and BJMac maintaining my emotional intelligence with his counsel. I am humbled by your friendship.

I am, daily, in awe of the support I receive from those who befriended me over the past 50 years, ( a football team mate from the 90’s just arrived, unheralded, at my door), so I cannot stress enough that the sentiment of BRTH’s post should be heeded by all. Each day brings more visits, messages, texts, phone calls from friends only wishing to help. Their contributions are invaluable. They make such a positive difference.

So where you perceive a need, support it.

You will feel better for it.

The recipient of your support certainly will.

    As BRTH may have said,

it is our capacity to care for other people that makes us a better person.

  19. Good evening from a very damp Manchester currently being “invaded” by a lot of big Feyenoord fans.

I have been an infrequent poster the last while due to work commitments but also due to the imminent arrival of my first grandchild.

The sad stories on here have caused a lot of reflection and concern as my daughter has had a stressful late part of pregnancy.

This morning at 9.25 we welcomed Nicholas into our family, thanks to superb work of the staff at Wishaw General , mother and latest Bhoy are doing fine and we hope to have them home soon.

They knew I had to leave for work but the staff allowed me in to see the Bhoy before I left for Manchester. Thanks.

My one worries are trivial compared to what other people have gone through or are still enduring. For this I am truly grateful, spent a bit of time at Carfin Grotto over the weekend as we fretted as parents do. Again, my faith never wavered and I am thankful for this also.

I look forward to the rest of this week, the Lhad has just arrived in Paris and he is up for the Cup Final this weekend. He will see his nephew and hopefully enjoy the football too.

I can now focus on trivial things like work and finding a ticket for Sunday. I put all of that on the back burner for the last 3 weeks.

I will have good glass of cider and an average cigar tonight, in my haste to get from home to hospital I left the good ones at home.

A small price to pay, take care everyone. HH

    Bada,

A move to Hampden for them may be financially positive, although I hope the rent is relatively at the level we had to pay.

How and ever, such a move, for it may be irreversible, would be spiritually calamitous and may be the straw kills the dead horse….again.
